Start a Podcast to Get Blog Traffic. And Learn From Experts
Chances are you probably listen to podcasts... if not you've definately heard of them!
But did you know that podcasts can actually be used to get traffic to your website? And you don't even need to do anything super special!
Why I Started a Podcast
So I always wanted to start a podcast, and it was a big reason I wanted to learn more about online marketing.
I keep learning stuff and I'd love a way to share the lessons with people (especially close friends and family... without preaching and leaving it up to them if they want to listen or not)
So I had an opportunity to have a chat with Grant Sabatier in January. Grant went from $2 to over $1 million in 5 years.
He uses a cool index fund trick meaning he can now earn $50,000 a year completely passivley and the pot will grow over time (meaning it allows for inflation).
Bascially within 5 years he became completely "financially free" for the rest of his life (hence his book Financial Freedom).
Benefits of Starting a PodcastAnyway this meant I started the podcast about 8 months sooner than I was planning...
And so many cool things started happening that I never anticipated when I started a podcast.
1. People started asking me to come onto my "show" (say what!?)
2. I could get over an hours 1-1 talk with people who have "been there done that" doing exactly what I wanted such as Pete McPherson from Do You Even Blog, Ben and Jeff from Dollarsprout [they make $240k/ month] Alex Nerney from Create and Go, Paul Scrivens from Dare to Conquer (if you don't know these names Google them... they're cool people that know what they're doing! Some of these guys charge $1,000 an hour for coaching calls!)
3. I was given expensive courses... for free!!
4. People talk to me about stuff I forgot I said, meaning I have more meaningful conversations with friends and family
5. You just "connect" so much more than you ever can from a blog (you are literally in someones ear buds when they are driving, working out, cooking, shopping... it's way more personal)
There are just a crazy amount of benefits that I never once even considered.
Anyhoo back to the point.

My website has been growing organically for a while quite nicely now... around the 50 users per day mark.
But look what happened when one guest sent the podcast with me to their email list!!
841 users in one day!!
I was at the motor bikes in Qatar at the time as Sarah's parents were visiting and I was receiving these notifcations... (someones just bought a Pinterest course I'm an affiliate of... people are joining your email list... stuff is happening on your website!!)
So I looked at my show notes for that episode and realised I hadn't finished them properly... there was no opt in form I had planned for... no Pinterest pin to share (doh!!)
But yet people were still staying on the website... finding ways to opt in... and connecting with me.
As soon as we got home I updated it but this was already the end of that massive 841 users day! I'd sort've missed the boat on the big stuff but the trickle effect was obvioulsy still going to happen for the next few days.
How to Start a PodcastAnyway, I know you may want to know a bit more about what it entails to set up a podcast. To be honest most stuff is completely free.
The only thing you really need to start a podcast is hosting. That costs around $110 a year with Podbean.

I'm going to put this disclaimer in here because I feel it's important... Do not see this as a shiny object!! These benefits don't just happen overnight like any other online marketing thing!! If you don't know what a podcast is, don't bother starting one just because I got a bit of traffic from a guest, that won't be productive!!
If you've considered starting a podcast before and have an idea of what you want to do then maybe this will give you the kick up the bum you needed!

It really is fun. I like the way that you can make it any way you want and I actually really enjoy the little editing parts. I keep the chats pretty much the same to make it easier but add little links and stuff in/ a quirky intro every now and then to keep it fun!

This is weird.... I wrote in my notebook - podcast yesterday along with hyper-personalisation/targeting... I wrote a blog about hyper-personalisation yesterday as I decided to do that first, then move onto podcast, how strange you show me today just what is possible! Thankyou!

I need to know all sorts of things! It’s a totally new experience for me. I font even listen to any .. my son does all the time.. I’ve accused him of wasting time listening to stuff on his iPhone only for him to show me its a podcast or a ted talk!☺️

Thanks so much ! He's very special boy, he's a tennis player and we live in Spain, away from our family in the UK so he can train and become a pro.... I have to say he has embraced everything.. he works hard both on court and off court... He has such focus and determination!
That's amazing! Has he started getting the ATP rankings? I always admired how hard tennis players work. He should defo check out "Open" (Andre Agassi's Autobiography) if he hasn't already. It really is an amazing read for anyone
No ATP points yet, but hopefully next year. Hes 17 and 500 in the world in junior rankings. Hoping to get sub 300 by Christmas and make a bid to get to junior Wimbledon next year.

Yeah, Alex (& Lauren) have a great story. Pretty crazy what they did, just quitting their jobs and all but you can certainly see it paid off for them.

Negative! I do not! I have heard the word podcast, yet did not fully understand what it meant! I've been reading blogs or posts and attempting to figure out what to say and think up ideas for same. Sometimes when the main lane of travel is under construction, one must another route to move on.
Wow, thank you for sharing this! I've started considering doing a podcast recently, as I do have a good microphone that would allow me to do a podcast. I certainly would like to learn more about podcasting as it has definitely benefited you and others that you know as well. It's definitely a great way to get your voice heard as well as drive traffic to your website which is what you pointed out. Great stuff!
It's defo one of those things that I considered. If Grant didn't offer to do a voice recorded interview I probably wouldn't have started still in reality!
It keeps me motivated and forces me to connect with more people, which is a great thing in my eyes
