You can not name it or you can do it via your smartphone. What's app, Skyping, Banking business, taking pictures, sharing files, ordering tickets, reservations, navigation road maps.

6 Signs of Addiction

  1. You are feeling very tense when you do not have access to your phone.
  2. Checking your phone constantly for new messages
  3. You feel your phone vibrate, but when you check there is nothing
  4. When someone is talking to you (physically), you don't hear a thing
  5. Your school/work suffers from it, you perform less
  6. When you forgot your phone at home you simply HAVE to go back

Are You Addicted To Your Smartphone?

Are you panicking when you can't find your phone?
Does everything have to wait when you hear a notification?
Does your heart react when your phone gives a sound?
Should you always be accessible?
Do you take your phone with you to the toilet and the bathroom?
Do you react to messages when you are in bed with your partner?
Can't you leave your phone in your bag/pocket when you meet some friends for a date? Are you going crazy when you do not have an internet connection?
Are you feeling handicapped without your phone?
Do you grab your phone even when it's not your ringtone?

You know, you are not dying without your phone. I survived the first 30 years of my life without a phone and without internet. So, it's doable.

I came to write this blog because this morning my daycare children came in and the 4-year-old was holding the $600 dollar i-phone of his mom whipping around the screen if he hadn't done anything else in his life. And the 6-year old came in with a tablet, but he is only in the daycare for 3/4 hours after school and that time we eat lunch. Never the less, the tablet couldn't stay home.

We, as parents and educators, are responsible for the view children have about- and the habits they develop with i-phones, tablets, and other (game) devices.

Very sad Loes, it has become an addiction not only for the young but adults as well. It always saddens me to see 2 adults at a nice restaurant each sitting there on their phones. We are loosing communication with each other and teaching children to do the same. My cell phone is only for texting and I do not babysit it.

Los of moms give a bad example

No Only I use my computer for work I can´t understand why the people have in your hand permanently the cell phone. My two daughters are part of this group. I think the responsible person is the millions of people in the world who created this need, I have always been characterized by following my path. Not a problem for us!

My children have that habit too Claudio

I can vouch for that Loes, it's not good to have as early as that to expose them just for fun and for games. It will rob an important aspect of the child's life.

I saw one during our gathering and it's annoying the whole community. The child starred all over the period and no one has the gut to say to the father that he is already disturbing everybody.

I am steering the children when they are in my home, but I ain't going to tell the parents either, that it's not sensible to have the habit to give your i-phone in the hands of a 4-year-old

While I THINK I rely way too much on my phone, my daughter and husband always complain that they cannot reach me on my smart phone. So I guess I can't be that bad. But I do confess that once I downloaded my bank app, I used my phone more often than my laptop to pay bills, move money, etc. I LOVE THAT!! Alanna

Haha, I pay for the phones of my children and when they are at home, they always have their phones within reach, except when I need them when they are out, then I get the voice mail (grmpf)

True!!!
It has become an addiction to most of us. Like you, many of us have survived several years with the smartphone and suddenly it has become our 'idol'.
I think for kids that age to be that engrossed is very dangerous and parents need to be warned.
Thanks for sharing.

I do believe also parents can play a big role

Hi Loes - I have been a month without my iphone because they want 360 Euros to repair it and so it is lying in the repair shop and do you know that I do not miss it at all and infect I now have more time on my hands funnily enough.

The travelling on the train it is like the whole train is full go people looking at their phones and this is really not a good sign - what is happening to us ?

paul

I even saw 2 people sitting next to each other using what's app...

there are so many horror stories as well!

I can't do everything for my business from my phone but I can do a lot. When three or four employees start pinging me at the same time that's when things get crazy. The Feds won't let us use the internet directly. Initially I thought this was a backward way of doing things however I have learned differently. So differently in fact that I am implementing these changes in my Consulting business. But the Feds es weren't the first ones. I have a client who runs a people business and her contention was it was more difficult to use the internet because her clients were baby boomers. Well turns out they all were right. I'm learning something new all the time but in the meantime I am definitely addicted to my phone. A good example is me lying in bed at 5:45 a.m. talking into this message.

Blimey, you are addicted, Jay! I often have to call my own phone, because I haven't the faintest idea where it is

Yep. I blame one of my singers, Kimberly Smoot. Years ago we were singing at this club in a less than great part of town and her Blackberry was stolen . Well of course I was going to replace her BlackBerry, she was one of my singers and she was there in my request. The thing was she didn't want the Blackberry. The new Google phone had just come out and she wanted a Google phone. So I replaced her BlackBerry with the Google phone and when it was time for me to get a new phone she convinced me to get a myTouch. And that's when I started doing all kinds of things on my new phone. It had the internet and email man it was a little computer in my hand and I carried it everywhere. I went from there to the Galaxies and I now have a Galaxy S7 Edge and I just bought my wife a Galaxy S8. I am still lying here talking into my Galaxy. Totally addicted. I'm about to make an order on this phone from one of my customers who has a product that I need. And yes before I get to work this morning I'm going to watch a program on Hulu . All while lying here in my underwear.
Yep I'm addicted.

Goede morgen Loes,

More and more often one reads scientific studies warning about the health risks holding a mobile phone close to your body and head. Often these modern inventions have negative side effects we are not aware of yet. Perhaps in 20 years, we will be told that the waves emitted by machines, be it micro oven, high tension lines etc etc, were not such a good idea. In the mean time, our DNA was modified, no thank you!

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

UMTS senders seem to have that effect too

It's a sad sign of the times, Loes.
We have to keep up with technology, but we have to be aware of how easily we can fall into the trap of letting it control our lives rather than enhance them, as intended.
Great post with lots of common sense - thanks for sharing :-)
Rich

Yes, we need to keep control, and not let it control us:)

It is quite comical to see people all around on their phones seemingly oblivious to the world around them but, conversely, I'm in a coffee shop right now and the overwhelming majority of people are talking to real people sat right next to them.
Only very few people are on their phones here just now and, ironically, I'm one of them!!
One thing is true though Loes and that is that the world is going mobile whatever Ludites might think and that means all online marketers making sure that their sites are responsive and that their seo increasingly reflects that, especially if your working in local seo.
Mark

Yes, we can not escape, I tell you, two of my daycare children were having good fun playing with cars and clay etc. one of them took his tablet with him one day and the other one said:"What am I going to do? I have nothing to do without a tablet...
I said, WHAT? You can draw, paint, clay, play outside etc.
No, he sat down on the couch, being very sad the whole afternoon, not having a tablet. For crying out loud....

Lack of parental control Loes, seems obvious that the child is allowed to get away with it at home so thinks he can do so anywhere.
