About website comments-give and take. (tiny rant)

I didn't know where to put this gripe, so figured here is a good place. I have recently noticed when leaving a link over at Need website comments, the give and take thread, that a few quite a few comments were being left. And that is great!!

But a few you could tell that my article was not read.

Example, my article "The Best Medicine", was an article on laughter being the best medicine. Not that one taking their medicine is often difficult. I actually commented politely back and let it go. In the case I could possibly have read it wrong. Although I'm fairly sure I did not.

Then I had another one, and I could only reply thank you for stopping by. It was that off topic.

Honestly, if you're going to take the time to leave a comment, might as well read the article, right?

Wouldn't it not really be engaging?? And could it hurt your ranking any??

My rant is now over....(steps off her soapbox)

I agree. Why comment on something that you have no clue about. I've only done the feedback thing once and I got some really good comments. I will be asking again in the future as I really want to make sure my content is engaging and pertinent to my niche.

Laura, you just described the exact reason why I DON'T use the "give and take" thread - just as I indicated in a post I did a while ago: I will continue to use the SiteComments platform - for ALL my comment needs - because the quality is heads and shoulders above the "give and take" thread.

Now, MY rant is complete!

:-)

I'm glad I'm not the only one that's ranting. :-)

It is good to have a rant now and then Laura. Yes wj=hen you read through some of the comments it makes we wonder what planet some of our members are on!

Hi Laura, I just hope I didn't reply in any rude fashion. I doubled checked your comment. It is appropriate and addresses your feelings.

Do you have to take all comments or can you be selective?

Not all of them, you can select which one to aprove before they go live.Because some of them will be irrelevant to your topic as people rush to comment before understanding.

I approve them all, but maybe I'll start doing that. Thanks for the idea. Didn't even dawn on me, duh!

It can be irritating, Laura, the give and take thread is a little less regulated as opposed to the site comments, where a couple of strikes and you are out.

It is a wonderful opportunity to create some content engagement, one of the issues is that we take it for granted that we are all English it would be really interesting to see the stats, there are so many folks here where English can be the second or third language.

I hear what you are saying.

I am with you Laura, it has happened to me a few times.
Normally I politely reply and move on, but the last time I got such a blatantly off-topic comment that I could not help sending a pm to the author.

Actually it was not even off-topic, it was just wrong. Anyone reading that comment would have instantly realized the author had not bothered to read my article.

So I informed him/her that I was going to edit his/her comment in order to make it look relevant, but at the same time I admonished him/her for his/her superficial behaviour.

The thing is (and I let him/her know that): not only are you not properly returning the favour, but also you are embarrassing yourself and this is not good when your name precedes your comment and you have your own website to promote.

Again, I did not want to cause him/her any problem, so I edited his/her comment and everybody was happy.

Someone else though, could just publish a comment "as is" and make the author look stupid with a sharp reply. It is hard to be lucky twice in a row.

That being said, he/she was apologetic and promised it would not happen again.

The moral is: whether I like it or not, I read through every article I leave a comment on. I would expect the same level of respect.

I am stopping the use of the comments engine. I am going to miss those site reviews that get passed off as comments!.

:-(

Hi Laura
If you going to do something you gotta do it right and hopefully people will read this and learn from your "rant"
Good rant and I hope all is going great with you and you biz apart from that
Vicki

I totally understand what you mean. I even thought of writing a blog here requesting people to read my posts properly before leaving a comment. I'm doing that to others' sites that I left a comment but not sure if they are doing that to my site.
