Long Day Resizing My Images!

Last Update: January 21, 2018

Today, was a long day! I had to go back and figure out why my site speed was so slow. Let me tell yeah! That is a tedious job. Especially, when you do not know where to start. The great part is I made it through. Well, at least all my images are resized...

SiteFeedback

I decided to test my site like 4 days ago because, someone from Site Feedback ,was kind enough to tell me my site was really nice looking but, it is lagging...And, he went on to tell me that I need to stick with a simplistic theme

...Oh okay, that makes sense...but, every theme I tend to get into has some sort of problems. I think I am just going to have to learn CSS to avoid all these issues.

Upon WA member Suggestion I tested My Site

Anyways, I went to test my site as the WA member gave me a link to test it with.

...And Oh was I really, really, really bummed by the score that I got. See image below

Okay, so you're probably wondering what does this mean. This means I failed miserably when it came to site speed. I didn't get an D or F.

.......I got an "E"......What the World....an "E"...

Okay so, of course, I was really bummed like Oh man, I have to fix this..and it is going to be a lot of work.

... I know because, I have to go into each and every post or page...sheesh!

I went to resize all my images. And it took me 10 hours.

I resized all images using Microsoft Paint...(Free on Windows computers) I am not sure about MAC

I timed myself because, I was really dreading this duty that called but, I did it anyways. And this the score I get now...

After seeing this score. I thought maybe it was a mistake so, I ran the test on Pingdom and wanted to see what it said...Here are the scores...

Wow! These scores sure are a lot better than that first hideous score I was shown.

....So, I am happy to say my website is desktop friendly now.

Okay, but there is more...

After achieving these higher scores. I was thinking Oh, I am so glad that this is ALL over but, then I go to test my site on mobile and this is what I see..I am losing 24% of my visitors from mobile. So, now I still have to tweak something on my site.

The life of an Entrepreneur...

If you have never tested your site and you want to know where you can test your site for free.

Here are some free websites.

Site Speed Matters

No one likes slow sites, and if the site is slow people tend to leave it immediately, which is not good for your site engagement or keeping your rank in the search engines.

I will have to continue with tweaking my site and improving my mobile speed or worst case scenario change themes again....

Welcome to the life of an entrepreneur....

Thanks for stopping by and reading this post...As, always have an awesome day...

Kisha, I can't believe you have been here for such a short while, and going very well with the pace. You'd share some excellent information that mean a lot to me and other's.

Have you been using the images from SiteContent? I thought these images were already compressed, but maybe not. Also, I thought the EWWW plugin that is standard here at WA was supposed to help with images. Anyway, this is something I am going to have to check.

Good question! This is the same thing I asked. The images that I used the majority was from Site Content. I also have the EWWW optimizer plugin installed but, for some reason. All my images still had to be reoptimized.

I found out by doing continuous test speeds to my site and that was one of my major errors (my images had to be optimized) after I optimized them all my site as sped up tremendously. So, I would assume my site speed errors were correct.

So, this is a question that I myself would also like to know. I even asked the community about the plugin and does it really work. And, I was told yes but, I never asked about the site content images being optimized. So, I have to been trying to look further into this because having these issues with images is a pain...

I have no idea what these things mean as far as the YSlow score goes on GTmetrix. My other scores are good.

Can anyone explain this in layman's terms?

I am not sure what these codes are. I did not even realize the YSlow existed until I just ran my site speed test and I saw the same errors except I have an extra which says

Make Fewer HTTP Request...whatever that is suppose to mean.

I tried contacting site support before with the question and they came back and told me my site was good. They used the Google speed tester. So, I am not sure if we just go by Google Speed Tester or what?

A few community members recommended GTmetrix and Pingdom. I'll have to keep working on those coding's and try and see if i can figure that out. Maybe the community will know as well, not sure...

Thanks for those links! I am still confused about what is the ideal size for a featured image. (edit to add) I too use the size you mention below...also you have Sitespeed selected, right in the Site Manager area? You can check page speeds there too.

You're Welcome! Yes, the size of the image is kind of confusing to me as well. I had my images sized at 453 x 302 at first. And, that was still too much for my WordPress theme. So, I just guessed a sized and went down to 350 X 184. And, now everything seems to work perfectly. As, far as the true size they should be. I really don't know the answer to that yet.

My SiteSpeed option yes, it was selected but, I never realized that you could check the speed from there. So, thank you for that...This really helps.

WOW, Kisha, that is quite an accomplishment! Congrats! Thanks for the testing sites. I'm not that far along yet, but will save the info for when I am ready for it. Carol

Carol, thank you! this was a huge tedious job...very stressful...I might add but, the great thing is I made it through..

You're welcome those testing sites where given to me by another WA member but, when I spoke to Site support here at WA recently. About my site being slow

It looks like they tested my site with the Google website...

https://developers.google.com/.

So, the other websites were suggested sites from the WA community...

What size did you resize your pictures to?
Reply
lakbar12 Premium
I really apologize about the late reply. I have been so busy but to answer your question.

I resized my pictures to 350 X 184 pixels.

Here is a tutorial if you need one The difference with the tutorial. you will find that he says to resize at 540 x 351 but, this did not work for me. I had my images sized at 453 x 302 at first, and they were still too big.

So, I went with 350 X 184 on all my images and it worked.
I am not sure if that is the correct image size though. I just know it worked and sped up my site...

me to, now I plan to check my sites on my phone. Should I go to a site set up for this purpose?
Any suggestions appreciated.
Is your site working like you want it to?

I test my site for mobile by Google themselves...which is https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/ <--- this site test your mobile and desktop. It is the same test that WA site support uses.

And these two sites at the bottom are Google mobile testers.....

https://testmysite.thinkwithgoogle.com/
https://search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly

So, far my site has been working like I want it to..so, far so good. I know for sure it has sped up tremendously but, I guess only time will truly tell...

Thank you. I tested with Google and have a report that I really don't know how to work with yet. I figure as I go forth, I'll figure it out. I have only been here at WA for a month, but I am learning so much. Thank you for your help and knowledge.

lakbar12 Premium
Sylvia, no worries, I am still learning as well. I am just a month ahead of you in WA. I been here two months. So, I still have a lot to learn as well.

Actually, I just received a Google report last night and have no idea on how to fix my site now...Apparently the resizing of the images where not the only things I needed to do...My site reports that is okay on desktop but, not for mobile.

So, now I am stuck with that...I am probably going to do the same just end up trying to figure it out as I go...

You're welcome....I hope everything works out well with fixing the errors on google reporting...

Have a great day!

I apologize Suzi, I have been working on my site. Okay so, when I asked site support today about my speed. They tested my site with Google

https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/

So, I would assume this is the one they go by only!

I would trust that one the most. Since Site support tested my site with Google...

Kisha,

It is great to hear that someone gave you excellent feedback on site comments so that you knew what to be improving.

I'm glad your work resizing the images has paid off.
Thanks for sharing the links.

I probably need to do the same thing. I hope you have a great week.

Yes, I never knew that just changing the image size would make a difference but, it did. I am glad to hear that your images have made your site speed up. I know it can be a pain...

I was wondering why my bounce rate is so high (95%), and then I discovered that most people will leave your site if it doesn't load in 2 to 4 seconds. I tested my site speed with Pingdom and got 16 seconds! Unfortunately, my problem isn't pictures. It's some other stuff I'm not at all sure about how to fix. :-(
Reply
lakbar12 Premium
Yes, you are right! The site still can be slow due to other issues. And, that is my problem with mobile. I was told that it could be the CSS file. It may be too large. One of the WA members told me to choose a theme with local CSS files and the file would not be too large. The only problem with that is I really, really liked my theme. So, i am debating on changing it or not.

Another, thing they told me that could slow it down is too many plugins. So, that will be a trial and error type of thing. I was also told to delete plugins that you are not using and delete themes that you are not using. If they saved in your WordPress.

Hopefully, we will be able to figure this out sooner or later.
