What is the difference between a website and domain name?

Looking for a bit of help here. I went to start to make a website, and discovered I dont know the difference. I have read alot but the more reading i do the more confused I am getting. I hate to ask for help, (number one reason I am spinning my wheels here) but i am at the point i am stuck. I know the answer has to be really simple.

Here's what i am thinking. I want to start an authorihy site, (yep, will require lot of research) on nurtriion, healthy eating, organic, and non-toxic life style. I want to put an updated blog post 1 to 3 times a week.

I want to add several links, (an ongoing thing ) as i find them. I know not to overload those type of links, starting perhaps with 2 to 3 and gradually over the course of weeks/months gradually add more. I went to namecheap to look at getting a domian name and the one I thought of is dianajonesmiller.com and it is available. Then I came back to WA to see about a website and it also appears that dot.com would be good. But if my domain name is dianajonesmiller.com as an authorithy site how do i connect the dots to come up with a website that has a dot.com, dot.net, or dot. org. I am missing a vital piece of imformation here, sorry to sound so dumb.

I know I could add my nurtrition, diet extra sites as links but I dont know how to start the ball rolling.

In addition I have the following questions:

1. Can i add MLM links on my website/domian site or can I only add SEO links?

2. In the event I were to leave WA, (have no plans to) can I take my website with me if I have outside domain and hosting links?

Thank you guys in advance, maybe I can move on to the next step. I know what I plan or want to do will be an ongoing web deveoplement but i can see it in my minds eye.

thanks again

what is the difference between a domain and a website??

A domain name is a keyword that specific to your site.
When people search for a solution of they problem, your site should be on the first page of search result.

I see Russ has given you the training link, it is always best to keep to the training and finish each task at end of lesson so we grasp each stage of the process, if you need answers to questions try the search bar first, live chat or post the question, wish you every success

Right on, Katie. Follow lessons, and finish every task given within each lesson.

Some good answers from our awesome WAers for you

dot com dot net and dot org are completely different entities. Like 3 lots sitting near each other. You can buy all three if you do not wish to have neighbors. You can redirect your dot net and dot org to your dot com if you just want to own the real estate and hold it for later.
You can add any type of link you want. What link you add can add or take away from your SEO score.
Yes you can take your domain name and transfer it to another hosting site if you wish. Just contact the people you bought your domain name from and ask them to set your DNS pointers to your new host.

Hello there, I will explain this for you

Building a website is like building a house, you need a piece of land first with an address
The domain name is the address of your website
The website lives at the address and you build your site on the address just like you build your house on a piece of land

Wordpress is the software you use to build your site, it is called a CMS
That is a "Content Management System"

Hope this makes it clear, I have lots of blogs on WordPress and other stuff that may help you understand this stuff better, so be sure to check out my profile, where you will see all my blogs

Love your graphic answer, Barry

Hello! But, the website is not an address? I mean, if you put the link in a browser it will take you to it. Sorry if I sounded super dumb, I'm actually pretty ignorant in this matter. I can't understand well the difference between a website and a domain. :S
