Using AI to Understand Your Kids Homework
Today, I want to share something pretty cool that I recently tried out. I used AI to help with my daughter’s homework!
As a parent, I know how tricky it can be to step in and help with school assignments, especially when the instructions aren’t clear (or when your child has a hard time or "doesn't feel like" explaining them to you lol).
AI can be an great tool to make this process easier, not just for homework but for all kinds of creative and constructive tasks.
The Homework Dilemma: No Instructions, No Problem.
The other day, my sixth-grade daughter came home with a homework assignment based on the novel Holes by Louis Sachar. She had a partially completed project and needed help, but there were no instructions, and she couldn’t fully explain what she was supposed to do. Sound familiar?
I didn’t know how to approach the project, so I decided to try something different. I took a photo of the assignment, which was a poster featuring the theme "Friendship" from the book. Then I turned to AI for help.
How AI Helped Decode the Assignment.
Here’s what I did:
- Uploaded the Image: I took a picture of the assignment and fed it into an AI tool.
- Asked for Context: I explained the situation to AI:
“This is my grade six child’s homework assignment. There are no instructions available, and my child cannot clearly explain it. Can you help me understand what the assignment is about and what the instructions might be?” - Received Clarity: Within seconds, AI analyzed the assignment and gave me a detailed explanation. It determined that the project was about identifying examples of friendship and key events from the novel. It even suggested possible instructions, such as focusing on the theme, selecting key events, and illustrating scenes from the story.
Thanks to this, I could help my daughter refine her work and ensure she was on the right track. I think it saved us both a lot of frustration.
It Helps Far Beyond Homework: More Ways to Use AI and Images
This experience opened my eyes to the broader potential of using AI with images. Here are a few ideas:
- Reverse Engineering Ideas: Take a photo of napkin notes, doodles, or sketches you’ve brainstormed, and ask AI to generate constructive feedback or ideas to develop them further. Who knows? It might turn into your next big project.
- Design Improvements: Snap an image of a presentation, poster, or project, and let AI provide feedback on how to improve its layout, design, or engagement.
- Content Creation: Use AI to analyze visual content and generate complementary written material, like captions or summaries.
AI has the innate ability to interpret and enhance visual input for all sorts of tasks, whether that is helping your kids with school or taking your creative projects (or napkin notes) to the next level.
Are you using AI to work with images or reverse engineer ideas? Maybe you’ve found other innovative ways to leverage AI for homework help, design, or problem-solving. I’d love to hear your experiences and ideas!

Hi Kyle:
Using AI to interpret an image through reverse engineering is helpful as you have shown in this vlog. I have shared in another setting here how I presented ChatGPT with images to get information about the subject. This is in the case of writing content or learning about something of interest.
It's fascinating to see how rapidly technology is advancing and the increase of knowledge in our time.
Thank you for sharing!

This is AMAZING!! I think I will use my few free image uploads on ChatGPT every day so ask what I can improve on designs and logos moving forward!
So glad you got help with schoolwork for your daughter. AI is such an amazing tool.

Love it Kyle! I have just got back to the UK to spend the festive season with my family here!
And... have spent the entire evening trying to teach my Mother how much AI can help her streamline her daily routine!!!
It's slow going to say the least, but... she has agreed to let me buy her, her first ever smartphone tomorrow!!!
Wish me luck and catch up again soon buddy!
👍👍
Yep there are many other ways to use AI as you have shown and not just for content creation.
Would love to hear the results after it is marked by the teacher and perhaps what they may have said with the results.
Hope your daughter does very well then again I am sure she does anyway.

Kyle,
AI is going to reframe education in the near future. We will no longer need teachers to teach subjects.
They will need to be teaching children life skills, thinking outside the box, and making the best use of the knowledge around them.
The subject knowledge is at their fingertips. What they won't have is a thought process to use it.
Similar to what we are doing here. Knowledge is all around us. What we do with it and how we use it, is where we need to excel.

Agree, Don. Correct action is essential!
