The Broad Approach To Business (and Why Not to Do It)
Hey Everyone,
Today, we’re tackling the idea of focus versus breadth in your business. The idea of being broad and taking on the world can be exciting, but in business it tends to lead to a lot less success.
I want to discuss why this is the case, and why I see people failing at a higher rate that try to take on too much (and people succeeding at a higher rate that take on less).
Key Takeaways:
1. Avoiding the Trap of Being Too Broad
A common pitfall I see is entrepreneurs trying to spread their efforts across too many areas. Whether it’s exploring multiple niches at once or diving into every possible marketing strategy, going broad often leads to mediocre results. It’s like trying to play every sport—basketball, football, soccer—if you try to excel at them all simultaneously, you’ll likely fall short in each. Instead, zeroing in on one area increases your chances of success.
2. Focusing on a Single Niche
Begin by choosing a single niche that you’re passionate about, one that interests you. This focus not only strengthens your expertise but also gives you a stronger foundation for success. By dedicating your energy to building up content and connections in that specific area, you’ll grow faster and more effectively.
3. Mastering One or Two Marketing Strategies
When it comes to marketing, it’s better to specialize in one or two strategies initially rather than trying to master every platform and technique at once. Here are some examples:
- SEO for organic traffic to your website
- Social media, with a focus on specific platforms like Pinterest or Facebook
- Google Ads or other paid advertising for a targeted approach
- LinkedIn for business-focused audiences
- User-generated content for unique engagement
Choose the approach that aligns best with your business and stick to it. Once you’ve refined your process and formula for success, you can apply that to other areas.
4. Building Success Through Specialization
Success comes through specialization. Hone your skills in one area, make progress, and then look at expanding to others if you wish. Over time, once you have a winning process in place, you’ll find it much easier to duplicate that success in other niches or strategies.
Your Thoughts?
Are you finding yourself trying to tackle too much at once? Are you feeling that sense of overwhelm as you try to juggle multiple niches or strategies? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the importance of focus.
Drop a comment below, and let’s discuss how focusing on one thing can lead to better results.

That's the trap I have been caught all the time. After two years of scrambling, I have finally got what you are describing here. Now, I have concentrated on only one niche, and I am inclined not to look at other niches before I achieve to get this business running and earning money.
Yes, we all finally get there and realize that being broad and trying to be everything to everyone, and trying to master every skill at once leads to lack of expertise and generally speaking, mediocrity.
Great to hear you have wrangled the "broad bug" in! :)
Thanks Kyle for the valuable lesson. As an unsuccessful past member years and years ago, I found myself doing exactly this. Chasing every shinning object and tried multiple niches I got excited about and got very discouraged and dropped out. I am at a totally different stage of my life now with lots of time on my hands so there will be a different focus this time around. I just want to choose a simple niche to begin with and see little successes along the way.
This is exactly what I Was just saying. I am creating 2~3 posts a week, reformatting them as posts for the posting platforms, taking snippets, and creating pins, reels, and shorts. Then I have a content calendar for the socials...
Unfortunately, I do not have the habit/pattern down yet to move smoothly through this routine.
It still has wrinkles.
So instead of ironing it out, I have started a community.?
Your post is timely,
Maybe it is a Sign!
That is a heft routine, and when you become more skilled and knowledgeable of different facets you can lay out more complex flows like this. This is definitely a much broader brand coverage, but if you have a flow that can work with your schedule that is great.
But just don't focus on too many things, if you find that they are all leaning towards mediocrity. You only need to great at one thing to be very successful online. ;)
It is a broad brush that I am using. On days that I am trying to finish up the post to get it published, I usually run out of time to do the other 4 things that need to be done.
That is why today is still Sunday! But the day will come when the routine will become a smoother routine.
And the day will actually be the day on the calendar!
Until then, I plug along I practice making everything fit!

Hi Kyle! I have a HUGE tendency to do this! I have so many interests that I was to try and explore, contribute and capitalize on them all!
Thankfully, this time I have been able to stick to one main topic, with 5 subtopics that relate and are key elements to the core topic. I have yet to get any income, but I am hoping to see something before the end of the year.
I am staying consistent and working on what I know. I love how WA offers so much info and trainings at my fingertips. And our community is wonderful; super helpful and supportive. I really couldn't imagine doing this without WA.

Angela, it sounds like you’ve set yourself up with a solid foundation! Staying consistent and focused like you are is exactly what drives results over time.
And you’re absolutely right, having access to training and support here can make all the difference and we will continue to evolve the training to keep you ahead of the curve. We have lots of exciting training planned to wrap up 2024 and right through 2025.
Thanks for sharing your insights. ;)
Looking forward to all the new stuff coming and new training to expand my knowledge base! Thank you Kyle!!

Hi Kyle,
Great video! I have been gone for awhile. But I will be back beginning mid November.
Are you still as enthusiastic about recommending the promotion of WA through PPC? Is $1,000 still enough to get started? If not, what amount do you recommend?
I look forward to hearing from you.

Yes, $1,000 is more than adequate to get rolling and I can help you with that as well. I am going to be coming out with training in the new year to help folks with this, but I could certainly get you a jump start here Bill. Just reach out to me.
Thank you, Kyle. I definitely will be in touch with you after mid November. I am looking forward to that jump start.

Hi Kyle,
It is after mid November, and I am ready for that jump start you mentioned to me on promoting WA through PPC. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Kyle:
You have always cautioned about being too broad and losing focus, and this is a great time for a reminder.
I am one of those individuals wearing many hats. At first, it didn't seem to be a problem. Now I realize it slows down the process of focusing on completing a particular task and trying to catch up with everything. At this point, I have to come up with a new strategy to better manage what I already have in the pipeline.
Thank you for the reminder.
Veron
Yeah, I think we naturally gravitate towards wearing many hats. We also don't want to box ourselves in and refrain from learning new things. But when we think of success and how that takes place, we should focus on a singular process and know that this is all it takes to be VERY successful online. :)
