Maybe this will help with understanding followers
Followers in our network. We all want more, but that doesn't mean we are getting them. I think part of the reason is that you may not know that someone has added you to their network.
In my goal to add five people a day to follow on Wealthy Affiliate, I don't always remember to tell them I am following them. I often just click the green "follow me" button and just assume they will know I am following them.
Not true. Do you know how I know? Because I discovered that I had people following me that I didn't realize were doing so.
I just happened to figure it out one day when I was looking at my network.
You can find that located under your photo next to "Rank" and "Posts".
I clicked on the number (which now says 527) and it took me to my network.
This first screen shows that I am following 1,069 friends.
Then I noticed the "followed by" button and clicked on that because I knew I didn't have 1,069 in my network.
This is where I saw that I had several people who were following me, but I was not returning the favor, not because I didn't want to follow them, but because I didn't know.
Perhaps you didn't know this either. Now that I do. I check at least a couple of times a week to see if someone has added me to their network so that I can give them a return follow. I also let them know that I followed them in return (most of the time! Sometimes I still forget.)
As you can see I am following way more people than are following me—but I wonder if that is just because people don't know that I am following them!

I do like what you have said here I can tell you to that if you have a email and check that out regularly it tells you that somebody has started following you. Not sure who except I would think it would be Kyle or Carson. or maybe they have it set up to put a massage on the persons email to let them know. This is just my thoughts on the matter.
I guess when I received the e-mails that said someone was following me, I assumed it was letting me know that someone had followed me in return. Not sure why I wouldn't have thought that some people might follow me first! :)

Thank you for the post! I wasn't aware of the followed by button. I get an email that let's me know when someone follows me. When I follow someone, I write them a message and let them know I am following them.
Thank you for your post. What I do is welcome new people and follow them immediately and give them a sincere welcome comment. They in turn, follow me right away.
As long as you have email notifications turned on you will be notified every time someone follows you. After that it is up to you.

Unfortunately when I signed up at WA I used my day job and everything else e-mail address and so I get hundreds and hundreds of e-mails a day.
Does anyone know if I can switch my Wealthy Affiliate e-mail so I get them in a different e-mail?

Seems like you should be able to. I don't know for sure, though. Maybe someone in the community has had experience with that. Maybe you could ask them. Do you know how to do that?
Great post, Karin. I didn't know. I thought the green button showed up when someone was following me that I was not following. Now I click the button, thank them for following me, and tell them I'm following them all at once.
I, too, have many more people that I am following than people following me. I'm wondering how many people know to follow me back.
I always tell people I'm following them when I do, but never thought of asking for them to follow me back. Just assumed that they would when they saw that I was following them. But it doesn't seem to work that way, does it? Guess I'll start telling them I'd appreciate a follow back. I have seen that in some people's comments, but never thought to use it before.

I'm sure you're not. The message below from Colette and Philip is a good point. That's how I know when I have a new follower. And sometimes it's someone I didn't know about, so it really does help.
I receive an email every time someone follows me. I realize many do not have that option turned on.
I do, too, and it is really helpful, even though I'm rarely able to keep up with following back right away.
