2 x 4 Therapy

If we are honest, most of us will admit that we have needed 2 x 4 therapy from time to time.

But what is 2 x 4 therapy?

It's when we are being stubborn about something—perhaps an issue with life or our business—and we need to get hit upside the head with a 2 x 4 to get us onto the right track!

I have required this sort of "therapy" multiple times in my life!

I first heard about 2 x 4 therapy a couple of weeks ago when I was listening to a TED Talk by one of my favorite authors Jess Lourey. She writes mystery novels.

Anyway, she was talking about how she had stopped writing for a long stretch of time and how 2 x 4 therapy got her back into writing and probably saved her life.

If you know Lourey's story her 2 x 4 came in a lot of very hard lessons causing unimaginable pain. But, she survived her losses and began to write again.

"Writing is good for you," she said.

Born Storytellers

We are all born storytellers.

"Humans have always used story to make sense of life," Lourey continued.

Think about it...from the earliest stories known to humankind...we have told stories to help us understand the world around us. When the caveman heard thunder and saw lightning, they told stories to explain what those natural events were and what they meant.

People did and still do tell stories of the big hunt, the ghost they saw, the skeleton in the attic. We tell stories. Some of them are awesome and have stood the test of time and have become classics. Some of them died out like the dinosaurs.

The fact remains that storytelling or writing is good for you. It is also good for others. Cautionary tales of wicked witches or giants or ogres can help us either stay out of harms way or inspire bravery. We can go on a great adventure and tell the story of it or we can be the ones who read it and become inspired.

Everyone has a story to tell

If you are afraid you don't have anything to write about, write about your experiences —they may seem menial to you but to someone they could be life-changing or could even save someone's life.

I created a website on surviving divorce and the things that helped me through the loss, the pain, the doubt, the fear.

It wasn't easy. But talk about 2 x 4 therapy! I know going through a divorce has made me a better person. It was surviving it that made the difference and, with hope, it makes a difference for others, too.

Piggy-backing on what I wrote about people wanting to do better, we have to show up. It is nice to "want" to write about our experiences it's another thing to actually do it!

I am putting my "money" where my mouth is and am working on a challenge of writing two posts per week for my website promoting WA. With all the helpful tools provided to us I think two posts per week is totally reasonable. Now I just have to show up and write them.

I had the AI author write one for me the other day and I am currently in the process of editing and adding to it. It will be published on Wednesday. I will have another one ready for publication on Saturday.

Have a great day, WA family. Together we can make a difference and perhaps provide 2 x 4 therapy to someone else who needs it!

Yes, we all have stories to tell, Karin. When we share them with our audience in mind, we can inspire, empower, educate, and entertain. I've had some 2x4 experiences myself and have used them as opportunities to make positive change. Like you, divorce was one of them, and it did lead to profound healing. I'm inspired by your WA journey and cheer you on to write those 2 articles a week!

I agree with Frank on that one!

Yes. We all do need each other now and again.

Writing is great therapy and helps with many issues. Sometimes just getting the words on paper helps us work through our problems.

Have a great week!

Nancy

Thank you Nancy.

Writing is great therapy and except for the paper and writing utensil is virtually free!
