Is there some advantage to using a pseudonym that just hasn’t occurred to me yet? If I wanted to change my name here, could I?
No, there isn't an advantage to using them. You are able to change your User Name inside WA one time. (In the Account Settings)
Why do many people in this community use pseudonyms here?

Hi - to change your name click on your photo, then go to account settings. You can only change it once.
Personal choice as to whether you use your real name. You are limited to 12 letters so that may be a factor. Or some people may prefer a quirky name. Plus, this is a website like any other, and anything on it is searchable on Google. People may wish to remain anonymous.

I see that my rank has already been updated compared to yesterday, but I'm wondering how often that changes. Anyone?

This is from 4 years ago but, I've no reason to think it's anything less than daily but, the algorithms have definitely been updated since then.
I had noticed the change before Jetrbby posted this last year. WA Changed Ranking Algorithm Again The comments section is a fun read as well.
Although your personal ranking may not change daily, the overall WA rankings are updated daily.
I have never watched closely enough to figure out what time the update occurs.

My rank updates daily around 2pm. I don't know how or why it's at that time but it is daily for sure.
The difference between your rank going up, down or staying the same depends on how active you are here at WA.

Someone mentioned Jaaxy in a comment to me. I had a quick look at the site and saw that it would allow me to get 30 free searches. I didn't see how much it would cost after I h
I think you have up to a hundred searches monthly on lite and the premium edition reveals more searches. It doesn't automatically charge you once you reach max searches, but will replenish at the next month. You also get affiliate commissions for referrals to jaaxy. There is training on it, and you will get to be a pro. Investing in the premium membership of jaaxy, I would suggest to consider after monetizing your site.
