A Pet Peeve of Mine....GRRRR!

I got a phone call last Thursday from a gentleman who said that he represented the XYZ Carpet Cleaning Company that wanted to make inroads into our community. To accomplish this they would clean the carpet in the room of my choice or a couch or chair for FREE. All I would have to do is to recommend their services to friends and neighbors. This sounded fair so they set up an appointment for 10:30 am this morning.

After making the appointment I googled their company name and came up with some scary results. It seems that the XYZ Carpet Company is really the XYZ Vacuum Cleaner Company and they use a tag team sales routine with a high pressure closure sales person to seal the deal. (Not unlike the familiar Timeshare sales pitch). They do sell a lot of their $1600 vacuum cleaners using these techniques. I read several of the google results horror stories and said to myself: "Self, do you want to go through this"? The answer was "NO" and I called to cancel the appointment. No one answered, but I left a cancelation message.

This morning I half expected them to show up anyway, but fortunately they didn't. Ironically, when I was 19 years old (53 years ago) I worked for the very same company (the name starts with a K), and I only lasted two weeks because of their sales tactics and when I quit I recall hearing a lot of 4 letter words and threats on the other end of the phone line. My pet peeve is people that lie to promote their business and unfortunately we see more and more of it online and in ads on TV etc., etc., etc. My carpet will just have to wait.....:)

Oh Yeah, I have dealt with the KY people before. They are slick...They tried to pull the same routine with me and mine a few years back...the neighbor intercepted him before anything bad could happen. Seems as though the neighbor's mother had been roped into a "great Deal" by the very same salesperson. Small world we live in, Huh? LOL..

It's a Small World After All.....I can almost hear a tune. I was talking to a lady today who was ready to call the cops to get rid of the K sales guys. She also said the the R company was just as bad. How do these companies stay in business?

Oh yes! The last K guy that was here was a nightmare. I finally threatened to call the police if he did not leave my home. In fact, we had to talk to his supervisors to get them to come get him. Infuriating and insulting! Never again!

Was his name Kirby? :) oops

Glad you canceled. High pressure sales are a waste of time on me. I end up selling them something, lol

Once I sat through a timeshare presentation because they said I won a sail boat. I turned down the timeshare and went to pick up my boat. It was in a 12x18x24 inch box, an inflatable with a telescoping mast. :)

LOL< now that figures!

It's very annoying all the false claims and manipulation, both on and off line. The great thing about the internet is that you can research these people. There's always someone telling of their experience with that company. I particularly don't like it when they conceal their identity. Very sneaky. Glad you cancelled before they got their foot in the door.

Hi - it is very annoying. I get at least two or three sales calls a day. Caller ID helps a lot :)

This is one reason why I don't watch television. I know about the covert tactics of commercial television and it really peeves me to see these adverts and know the strategy behind them.

The one thing that comes to mind is an old commercial (I know this has been stopped) but Oxydol was a laundry detergent with little blue specks. These were different than any other soap powder.

If it wasn't enough that they claimed "Get Your Clothes White for Life!," they were touting that those blue little specks were where the power was.

It was found that these little specks were made of the same exact stuff as the white specks! They were colored blue!

I know this is old, but pick most any commercial on television and take out this little claim, and what do you have?

Nothing but a hot air sandwich!

Hi Daniel: I'm with you on the TV thing. I don't watch commercial TV at all. :) Thanks for checking out the blog post.
