Domain Names are so Expensive, Why Do I Even Need Them?

Last Update: February 15, 2016

Getting your own domain name is almost a must if you want to do business online, and if you have been doing online marketing for a while now, you will already know this.

Getting Your Domain

Too many of you are afraid to purchase a $13 domain but I really don't get it. It's your business and it is what will get you paid.

You have to invest money to make money right? This is probably the cheapest business to get started and thanks to WA, we all can benefit from it. So what about the domain name?

Free VS Paid

Don't get me wrong, the free Siterubix are a great way to get started and is already worth the money. As an online marketer however, you want to worry about other things.

  • Branding yourself
  • Flexibility
  • Customization
  • Selling the domain

This all can be done with the free Siterubix sites, but you want to invest into something you actually own.

Goodbye Godaddy!

I used to get my domains with Godaddy for $1, but I ended up paying for it the following year because their renewal fees are insane!

WA has now added domains (which I absolutely love) and you really don't need to go anywhere else.

So on top of all the training, support, and website hosting, you can now get domains right here on the WA site.

Why WA Domains Rock

I know it can sound a bit pricey in the beginning, but you are actually saving in the long run.

Along with the savings, you also get site security and personal email. If you were to get these separately with another domain provider, you will pay a lot more than $13.

Site security is a big deal and I really hated paying for them when I didn't feel confident with Godaddy's service.

Now, I have all my sites hosted here and I know there is a solid team working in the background that will keep everything running smoothly.

The moral of the story is...Get your own domain! lol

I bought my website domain from WA because I didn't know about Godaddy before, lol. Thank you for the information about Godaddy's renewal fee.

My domain name does not match my site name. I am thinking about buying the domain name that matches(it is available), then transferring my website to the new domain. My site is only 3 weeks old. What are your thoughts on this?

Good question! I think the answer is it depends. If the site name and domain names have similar keywords for the same niche, I would not change domain names. If the domain name is being used as a brand name, then I would not change it.

I may change the domain name if the site name is a better keyword. Unless the domain name is a better descriptor of the site.

Hi Chris,
I think if your domain name is related to your content of your website, then that should be ok, as long as it is in the same niche, then you wouldn't need to buy another, I can't see how this would make an adverse effect.

See what reply you get from others.

Thanks

I think Glen's explained it well. I agree.

Yea I want the domain name(Brand) to be the same as the site, just thinking it would be best to get the change out of the way early and get indexed again on Google, rather than down the road when my site is established.

Being a Canadian, buying anything USA is expensive. I am a low income almost senior having a hard time making ends meet, but I really believe WA will give me my nest egg so to speak, so as soon as I can I will buy a domain.

You can always transfer to your domain later but definitely try and get one sooner so that you can let it age a bit.

You should Linda, it's like the platform of your business, you don't when and how much it can become worth.

Yeah I actually need to update (or delete, lol) this post because I have learned a lot with Godaddy. WA now offers domains, which is one of the best things to ever happen to this site. Godaddy charges way too much after the first year, so it is worth doing everything here, now that they offer domains.

Thanks for your advise. I bought a domain name from 1&http;://http://1.ca for 99 cents. I was not able to access my account and after many emails and phone calls I accessed it just now. Guest what the condition they have. I can only get the authorization code for transferring my domain after 60 days. If I have my website ready for publishing before that, I would go for anther provider. If you have any idea how the 60 days can be shortened, please throw me your ideas. Many thanks for your support.

I've never heard of that 60 day wait and I've never used Namecheap either. So you still had to pay the full price?

Very well put. Everyone has to put a value on what they want from joining WA whether as a free member or premium. You have to invest in yourself both time and money.

This is a very small investment compared to a physical business and the ROI will beat any small business. I have ran a bar and my online business still does better, lol. I mean $.99 for a domain name?

I really didnt know it was that important, but, ok, guess I will do this. But, maybe not right now. I just got started on this not long ago, on Lesson 8. I try to work on this as much as possible, but I also work with my husband, and we have been out of town lately working. So, think we will be working here in town now, and I can get back to business! Thank you for the info! Tammy

Not so much that it's important Tam, but it just works better. You own the domain, you can brand yourself, and it also becomes apart of you. But yes, keep training and don't worry so much about purchasing one. I just wanted to share that domain names are not at all expensive and you can get them for 99 cents. If you need help with this, just let me know and I'll show you where to get them.

Thank you John, I really appreciate it. PS You look mighty young to me so I think you should be proud of yourself for having your own business instead of running the streets like so many young guys i know. Best wishes John and Thanks again:)

I just don't get this $127 for the second year thing. I have about a dozen domains with GoDaddy and have had them for years. All of them are $10 to $15 a year. Remember .org or .info domains are just as good and they aren't even that expensive.

These 99 cent domains are good for a year but you are in this for the long run I went to renew one of mine and they wanted 127 dollars for the next year Be sure you renew it before 30 days of expiration or just go with namecheap.com and it is the same each year

$127? I suggest the discounted domains, so that you can get started and build your brand. Being a member of WA, you will start to make money before that domain name is ready to be renewed. Once that time comes around, your site will be a force on the internet and that $10 or whatever it costs to renew won't mean anything. This is just a great way to get people started with owning their own domain name, for a very, very affordable price. Thanks for sharing Walt!

I have never heard of this before. I have just renewed a couple of domains that I got for 99 cents and it only cost me around $12 for the entire year. Where did you get this domain from?

I had (still have, actually) a domain name with Blue Host and they also wanted over a hundred dollars for the second year. I will have to check if it is just the domain name I am paying so much for ?

Owning your own domain is owning your own little piece of internet real estate.
