My 2nd Sale!

Yesterday, I officially made my second cloth diaper affiliate sale! My first sale was on December 15th, so this came just one month and one day later. I am pretty excited! I'm almost 4 months into this process, but have been working like crazy. I'm probably around 15-20 hours a week now, but was putting in 30+ when going through the training. It's been a time committment, but it's been so fulfilling and rewarding. Never in a million years did I ever think I had what it takes to have a successful website. I am hopeful for the future and can't wait to watch my business grow in 2019.

I should note, I'm not exactly sure if this counts as a second or third sale. I somehow have $7 in rewards for another affiliate program, but I have not gotten around to writing a post on that yet and have not promoted it, so no idea how that's possible. I think it's a mistake so I'm not counting it.

This official second sale was not an Amazon affiliate sale like my first one, so I still need to make 2 more Amazon sales in the next 2 months or so. I'm optimistic. We will see! Really hoping I do because I have almost 70 posts now, and replacing links would be a nightmare. But alas, it is what it is I guess.

I believe most of my sales are coming from people finding my website on Pinterest. Not totally sure, but unfortunately I'm not really climbing in the google rankings yet. The keywords for which I actually am supposedly ranking high aren't even the keywords I've targeted, and have very little to do with my subject, so that's disappointing. (Example: No idea how I'm supposedly number one (according to Google Webmaster Tools) for "Zarbee's". That is a homeopathic brand of children's supplements. I don't think I've ever mentioned that brand to my knowledge. I would also think Zarbee's own website would beat me? When I google it, I don't find myself. I question webmaster tool's accuracy sometimes...)

All that aside, I'm so excited to be seeing sales in my niche. The commission percentages aren't high (5% is standard for cloth diapers, and Amazon is 4% I believe) so I'm not rolling in the dough by any means. But this really goes to show you can make any niche into a profitable website.

Last week, I blogged about my worry that my niche might be dying. I was judging by the other cloth diaper blogs I visited, and they seemed pretty inactive in recent years. However, I've been exploring what little market research I've been able to find without paying $$$$, and I do think the niche is growing. Slowly, but growing. Google trends do show it slightly down since 2005, but that year a major brand was just introduced to the market, so I think it makes sense that there was a big spike in interest that year. Overall, it's still pretty steady. Exploring Google trends more and more, I was surprised to see how much more overall interest cloth diapers have than some of the more recent buzz words, like "zero waste." I think there is hope that this niche will start growing more and more. I was able to receive a sample of a market research report, and the info I was able to gather from that was encouraging and helped show me where I should put my focus in this niche.

Cloth diapers may be a small niche, but it's an industry that has been sustaining small and medium-sized businesses for years and years. I don't think it's going anywhere.

No doubt it's not the most lucrative niche though, lol! 5% commissions on $20 products will require lots and lots of sales. But I have other affiliate posts for other eco-friendly products with larger commissions, too, and I hope those posts will eventually take off.

Congratulations Holly,

Well done and very inspiring post.

Have a great day.

Jules

Wonderful progress in a such short time. Congratulations!

More is to come. Keep up the good work!

Congrats, Holly! More to come! :o)

Thanks!

👌👍😄

Congrats on your second sale. If I can add a suggestion, offer more links to other merchants than to Amazon. This is a product that people consider seriously before making their selection - thought is required, and often that thought may take longer than Amazon's 24-hour cookie. I suspect you've made a lot of money for Amazon, but earned only once for that very reason. Choose those with longer cookies!

Thanks Jeannine! This is exactly what my second sale was--a different seller than Amazon. :) I've got a few different cloth diaper affiliate programs I'm part of.

I would emphasize those more than Amazon for sure.

Sometimes I will link to both and discuss when you might want to order from one store over another (example: price is a bit cheaper on X site, but Amazon has more prints and colors available if that’s important to you). Is that wise? I’ve also been wondering if it’s okay that I’ve been putting competing affiliate links in the same post...wasn’t sure if it was against terms of service or something, but I didn’t see anything about it in the user agreement.

Is this an okay strategy or do you think that doesn’t make sense?

Yes, it's okay to have both and offer a comparison between the two. What is your Amazon conversion rate from click to sale? It should be at least 1-2%, if it's less than that you are losing sales.

It is less than that. I wish my other programs reported clicks to me so I could compare!

Most networks do report clicks. Views are difficult to capture, but clicks aren't. Are you working with these programs via networks?

Nope, they are independent programs. It just shows me orders and commissions when I log in.

If you can find ones on networks, you'll be even happier. They have better tracking and offer advanced technologies, like cross device tracking.

I am part of shareasale and one cloth diaper company is on there that I'm part of, so that's awesome! But I find the companies that sell multiple brands (not just their own) aren't part of a network, which is unfortunate.

AliExpress.com sells cloth diapers and is on Awin.com. So does Bonanza.com. Etsy.com sells quite a few items when searching for cloth baby diapers. All of those are on Awin.

I’ve looked in to Awin but thought you had to pay to be part of it and I was trying to avoid any network that requires me to do that, even though Awin is a popular one. I’ll have to look into it more.

For starters, read: Since you are a premium member, I can also offer a code for you to join as my guest.

Awin is the largest network in the world, with exclusive merchants like Etsy, HP StubHub and Missguided. Yeah, we're good!

Thanks, this helps clear that up. I'll sign up today.

Wow, that is good news, guess what i Joined just a day before you. Though we kind of have similar stories but different niche

You have 70 posts!! wow I have just 20 posts so far

You sure have a wonderful niche, and you will soon be, if you are not already an authority in your niche, Google will have to come to it senses.

Best regards.
Abdulramon

Thank you for the kind words! Posts are difficult and time-consuming to write, don't feel bad about 20! I have an advantage here as I'm only working very part time right now, and I also happen to also be a writing teacher, so it comes easier to me than some. You will build more and more!

Yeah right, thanks for your awesome post :)

That is exciting !

Congratulations Holly!

Once again, congrats Holly!

The avalanche has been started :)

Thank you!

My pleasure :)
