Hi, All!

I was hoping someone in the community could help me determine whether or not it matters how your link is displayed in the search engines for SEO purposes.

To to Settings > Permalinks and choose Post Name. It will not change your URLs but it will change the way the posts show up on the search engine results.

Yea, I've already had that set up that way. I'm thinking one of the plugins changed it around. But thank you for the advice!

In the dashboard of your wordpress, you have settings... medialink
Be carefull with those... best is to juse standard

If w/e you are doing is working I wouldn't change it. Are you using an SEO plugin? and if so, which one?

All you have to do is make sure that you're filling out the meta info correctly. The display probably has something to do with schema so I wouldn't be concerned.

Yes, I am using Yoast SEO plugin and I feel like that may be causing the problem or having a conflict with another plugin. However, I am ranking for over 4,100 relevant keyword phrases that I certainly don't want to lose but others I want to improve and wonder if it had any impact on keeping them from getting the boost I am trying to get for some of those keyword rankings. I wasn't sure if anyone else was noticing their permalinks showing the way mine do in the search engines and/or knew if it was anything to be concerned about or not. I also don't know how important keywords in permalinks are anymore.

Regarding the schema data, I also have a SSO Free plugin that has a schema markup extension that is supposed to help show the correct schema markup but it also took away some capabilities of Yoast and I can no longer control the images associated with social media posts and I'm not sure that it is reading the correct metadata that I want the search engines to pick up. Perhaps, I should ditch that extension altogether? However, it was helping to place the proper schema markup read by the search engines.

I know this probably sounds very confunsing but it feels like I need to choose between correct schema markup or correct metadata and social media pics and sizes.

Anyone that can follow this and help is greatly appreciated and I appreciate the insight you've provided already.

Perhaps, I am packing over nothing, lol. I'm stuck and don't want to suddenly drop my rankings.

Thanks!

I think you're overthinking on this. You're ranking fine as far as I can tell. You're not going to be ranked #1 for all of the keywords you target no matter what tool you use.

Keep doing what you're doing. You're doing fine. All of this sounds like how it's supposed to be. :)

You're probably right. It is just one of those things that were bothering me that I couldn't figure out, lol. Thanks!

Yup, just actually did this a little while ago to block the spam referrals, but the spam emails was something new. Very odd. Hopefully that took care of it, thanks!

See if you can block qisdo.com....German website

Yea, definitely going to do that. I have had to block vitaly and those weird sites before. I don't know why it keeps popping up. I haven't seen the fake email sign ups before. That is definitely something new. Thanks for the feedback

Those little bots are always up to something.....worse than gremlins..lol

Today I've been getting several like this j.i.m.sm.it.h@gmail.com or whatever, I'm thinking those are problematic, I've also had some from .ru that I question but seem to get a lot of readers that are Russian on that site.... Is there a list somewhere of address to watch out for? Maybe I can figure out the right way to google that and find out? :)

Weird, it seems like there has been a lot of hacking going on from other countries, lately, where these strange referrals and everything pop up. Hopefully, it is not something to be concerned about. I couldn't seem to find out too much information on Google about it

I would always assume that anything originating from Russia is suspect and try to block it. I know there is a plug-in called Q-block (or something similar) that can be set up to block entire countries or specific ip addresses.

Haven't had that experience, but it sounds like a spam campaign. I would also watch for hacking.

Best to you,
BigDaddyFred

Yea, I was thinking the same and found it really odd when I saw the large string of them coming in and it has me a little concerned. Figured I would ask around for information

I have purchased about 10 domains over the last few years and have never had an issue. In fact, the one time I made a mistake and misspelled the domain name I wanted, I contacted them right away and they gave me An immediate refund although technically they did not have to.

Glad to hear it is not a constant thing. Last time I had an issue, it was a double charge and an admitted error on their end. refund was issued and it took two weeks to receive. I was just frustrated because something as simple as purchasing a domain should not turn into an hour ordeal. I have been extremely busy so time is valuable, but it is what it is. Luckily, it's take care of now and it's only for a domain purchase so, I don't need anything else from them beyond that

I have not had any issues. Good luck!

Thanks, no worries. Just frustrating, but luckily, it is only a very small piece of my business or creating sites so, there are worse things that I could be having issues with, but either way, it's not something that should have complications, IMO

Not sure why this happens to you. Maybe your cache files from the last time are still on your computer. Clear you cache completely.

I've bought several domains over the years from Namecheap and have never had any issues.

Are you logged in when you make the purchase? I could see it going through twice if you did it once and then didn't wait long enough for it to process and tried it again.

They offer a choice of funding your Namecheap account first via Paypal, then paying from the deposit on hand so if you only transfer enough funds to cover one domain purchase, there could never be a duplicate charge. That could be an option if you continue to use them.

Sorry, I can't help more.

Thanks and no, cache was cleared and I hadn't had to buy a domain in quite some time through them. Their support basically said it was just a hiccup in their system and apparently, it has happened to many other people, too. I was logged in and set up and everything. It was really just a problem with their system, after dealing with support for nearly an hour.

Who knows, maybe it was just bad luck, but to go through this headache twice, when I am just trying to get a simple domain purchased, was really frustrating. Oh well, it is what it is. Thanks for the feedback!

I can understand your frustration. What are the odds of it happening twice? If you give them a 3rd chance, I would change the time of the day to a few hours earlier or later...lol.

Yea, it happens. Luckily, there are many options for purchasing domains and I don't need much from them beyond that so, could be worse. Thanks for the feedback!

Nothing to do with hosting. I am simply trying to register the domain. I haven't set up the nameservers, yet. Thanks, though. That is what is so frustrating. This is their entire business, basically. Just registering the domain. The initial purchase turns into a headache every time. I am getting it fixed by their support now and set up, but once again, I have to wait for the chargeback to process from their system screwing up and simply buying a domain takes almost an hour. It will be the last domain I register with them. I don't have an issue with the wait for the nameservers though, I know what you mean. I can have the patience for that, but shouldn't have to have patience to purchase the domain in the first place, ya know?

I never had a problem
John

Lucky! I can accept a one time, well these things happen, but multiple times to register a domain and have their system not complete the registration, charge me, then have to issue a chargeback and still need to pay again to have the domain actually registered is frustrating to put it lightly. One hour to complete the purchase of a domain is insane. You live and your learn though. This will be the last domain I register there

i guess i had to wait 24 hours for hosting settings to work with Name Cheap that was my only issue..

Hi all,

I have a question that I am sure I am not the first to ask, but couldn't seem to find an answer for how to approach.

I am switching over to a Premium theme,

As a Premium member of WA you can have 25 websites hosted at WA. I suggest you buy a second domain name (about $10), host it at WA and try out everything on the second website before going live on your original website. I'd check with support to ensure that you can have a premium theme hosted here before buying the new domain name. ~Marion

Hi Marion,

I know having a Premium theme hosted here is no problem. You can have virtually any theme hosted here without restrictions. I had thought about your suggestion, but do you know if testing and editing would also automatically publish the site? I don't want to end up with any duplicate content issues and end up penalized.

Right now, I think I am going to give the plug-in that Leo had mentioned in his suggestions a try and hopefully, I'll be able to do every and anything I need on the back end, while my readers see the same current set on the front, until I am ready to officially launch.

Good suggestion, though and one that I will keep in mind and definitely consider, if the plug-in can't meet my needs and I can figure out how to set it up on another domain without publishing to avoid the dupe content concerns. I already have a couple other domains registered so that part is already taken care of. Thanks again and all the best!

Leo is"Da Man"

Tis true!

You have a few options:

1. Use FTP to access/edit the files

2. Install WordPress on your local machine and use/edit the theme there, then upload to your host

3. Use a plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/theme-test-drive/
( I have never used this plugin)

4. Create a test site and upload the theme on that and tweak it the way you want - then upload and make the changes live.

5. You can use tools like MAMP, XAMPP, and FTP clients to set up and use a testing environment. (This is pretty advanced)

6. WordPress customizer - it is limited - here's the steps

When the theme is uploaded or installed, click the “Live Preview” link at the bottom of the status screen. There is also a “Live Preview” button for each theme on the main “Appearances > Themes” page.

The customizer options appear to the left of your theme preview. Use them to tweak and tinker to your heart’s content.

When you’re ready to publish, click the “Save and Activate” button at the top of the Customizer.

Hope this helps

Just the man I was hoping to hear from! And THE man you are! These are great suggestions and I am going to try and figure out which option will be best for my needs. I may give the plugin a try first, as I am currently hosting this site here and not too sure about ability to access via FTP when using WA hosting.

I think this provides me with enough options to start right now and hopefully, one of them will suffice.

I truly appreciate the response and the detailed list of options. Really helpful! Thank you, my friend!

Howie

You're welcome

Thank you!

leoemery made a fantastic tutorial for this exact situation:

Awesome, I am going to definitely check this out! Thanks for sharing!

You are most welcome!

Yes this is a fantastic tutorial - LOL

But this shows how to change themes not how to modify a theme prior to activating it

How long do you think it takes to make adjustments to the new theme? 1 hr, maybe 2. Most of your setup should be converted anyways. Changes to menu or sidebar layouts don't take long, usually.
John

Hey John,

A fair question and my answer is that I honestly don't know. What I am concerned about is even if I try and make these changes on "off-hours," if it takes longer or doesn't look or feel the way that I would like it to look and feel, I would have to roll back to the previous theme AND potentially disturb traffic and production to the site for whatever time I take, while making these changes.

Instead of feeling rushed with it, I would prefer to make the changes virtually "off-line" an then roll it out the "right" way and in the way that I comfortable with doing once it is fully ready. Do you know how and if this can be done?
