What's Your Name? Is It Mary or Sue?

It seems so simple. Yet it is one of the most overlooked things on many WA profile pages... What's your name? Is it Mary or Sue? Ted or Alice? Is it Deborah, but you prefer to be called Deb, not Debbie? Michael, but everyone calls you Mike?

One of the first things you should do when creating your profile is... introduce yourself!

I'll be the first to admit it. It doesn't always help, but most of the time it pays off. For instance in my case...

My name is Hal. My user name is Halinphilly. And even though I have explained multiple times that my user name when broken down is, Hal... in Phiily (because I'm from Philadelphia), to this day, I get messages addressing me as Halin. I have never even heard of anyone named Halin, but sure enough, some folks think that's my name. So, if you're one of them, please note - it's Hal. Thanks.

Remember the immortal words of William Skakespeare: "What's in a name? A ROSE by any other name would still smell as sweet?"

Or Dale Carnegie, "Remember that a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language”

But getting back to the subject at hand...

This has been blogged about in the past, but every now and then, I think it help to get the word out there. So, again I say... introduce yourself. Let us know your name and if appropriate, you nickname or however you like to be called.

Granted, we can now find your name easily enough by mousing over your photo, but let's face it, we prefer to have you introduce yourself. I feel a little bit like a stalker when I have to take that extra step to track your name down. So let's not lose sight of the little things like an introduction. Here I'll start: Hi, My name is Hal. What's your name? Is it Mary or Sue?

Or Rose?

Yours truly,

Hi Hal, I agree with you. Irv.

Word association helps with memory too. Hal like from the movie 2001. :)

Good point

Hi Hal, not any of those, my name is Loes ;)

:-D

Hi Hal,

My name is Susan.

Not Sue, Suzanne, or Suzie.

(Except for Howard and Don. For Howard, I am OLWA Mom and for Don, I am OLWA Sister)

Thanks, Hal.

Susan

You're quite welcome, Susan :-)

HEY HAL !!, how the hal are you doing.
I just learned from your blog that I could hover over someone's picture and get their name and profile.
Thanks !

I agree with you Hal.

I believe it is good manners to let people know your name, or what you prefer to be called.

I spend far too much time on trying to find the name of new members. I know a name can be seen when clicking on their image, but that is not always the name they prefer.

It can be the same with replying to a member's comment. Their profile name is not always their preferred name.

Let's hope this post of yours Hal is widely read. It needs to be in the Top 10!

Thank you for the vote :-)

I do the same also or scrolling down to see if anyone else knows the name! Thanks, Hal :)

Yup. You're welcome, Carol!

I sometimes have to go to the original welcome from Kyle to find the name Hal!

Exactly! So do I. Probably many of us have gone through the routine just to welcome someone or return a follow.

I do the same, hover over the picture.

I always called you Hal from the start anyway...:)

Yes, I know. And it's very much appreciated :-)
