Thyroid Cancer Surgery. Never Been Operated On in 53 Years!

I'm still in a daze...

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that Tuesday, November 27th 2018 I actually had cancer surgery...

It literally seems so surreal.

Thyroid cancer.

They had to remove some of my lymph nodes as well.

Never been a smoker or a drinker. Never. No recreational drugs either. Never used marijuana... Just the smell of the stuff makes me sick.

Man... I thought I knew what pain was. The pain after the operation makes a grown man cry - especially at night does the pain become more acute. I can't seem to lay down flat - have to sit up to get any reasonable rest.

This sucks!

You see, just when you're on the right track, just when you're so close to the thrill of reaching some of your hard fought goals... Then this!

This is exactly why I wrote the post "Unwavering Focus."

Circumstances of Life will come after you like a rabid wild animal, and if you don't fight back, your circumstances will eat you alive. Disease does not discriminate. When it comes, it comes hard.

Many of you here at Wealthy Affiliate are dealing with serious health issues as I write this post, yet you refuse to quit, you refuse to give up!

Day after day you continue to work on your affiliate marketing businesses despite the obstacles, some of which seem overwhelming.

In times like these the community here at Wealthy Affiliate is a huge advantage that I find quite encouraging -especially at times like this.

Come to find out, my younger sister had to have her thyroid remover about 3 years ago, so this may be a genetic fluke. So although my case seems to be a family predisposition, it could have very well have been my diet that could have been the culprit.

With major health issues usually come major adjustments, especially dietary changes. However, I've seen people fail to eat healthy, even AFTER their doctor made it clear that they must change their dietary habits!

I've been reading Dr Joel Furman's book "The End of Heart Disease". Absolutely remarkable, eye-opening book.

I started reading this book because I wanted to find a way to naturally lower my blood pressure without becoming dependent on pharmaceutical medications to do it.

It was during my doctor visits months ago for high blood pressure that my doctor discovered the thyroid issues.

I'm also reading "Anticancer: A New Way of Life" by David Servan-Schreiber Md Phd.

The interesting point both doctors agree on is the Standard American Diet, or SAD as it's appropriately called, is a major reason for the development of cancers, heart disease and strokes.

So my point is this: If I were you, I would take a hard, long look at my daily dietary habits in relation to my health. You cannot separate the two.

Sugar. Salt. Processed foods. High Fruitose Corn Syrup. Dairy. What we stuff in our mouths is slowly killing us. Not intending to be critical of those who like sugar, salt processed foods and dairy; just stating facts.

I could spend hours talking about how our food is killing us, but I won't. If you care about your body, that's something you have to do for yourself.

Chinese food, chicken wings, french fries, diet soda and ALL sodas, pizza, breakfast cereals, dairy products, even so-called "low fat", "low calorie" foods are a total joke.

Anything, I mean ANYTHING coming out of a restaurant is LOADED with sodium.

And if any of you are obese - do something, NOW. Not tomorrow or next week, TODAY! If you don't pritorize your health and treat it with a sense of urgency, you will live to regret it...IF you live.

Actually, I would encourage ALL OF YOU to read "The End of Heart Disease: The Eat to Live Plan to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" by Dr Joel Furman.

I can say this with certainty; although we live in the most prosperous country in the world, we Americans take far too much for granted.

Please, if some of you younger WA members are reading this, don't make the boneheaded mistake of thinking you're immune to this because of your age and relative good health.

You cannot eat everything you want for years and years and expect that your bad habits won't catch up with you. That's NOT how it works.

You only get ONE body. You only get ONE crack at this thing called Life. Just ONE.

Gotta go now...the pain is quite uncomfortable...

Oh my...that sounds like quite an ordeal. You're looking on the bright side...lots of time to write. Praying for your speedy recovery.
Debbie

Hey DebbieRose,

Thank you for your kind words...
I also pray for a speedy recovery.

Howard

Hi, Howard. My father, whose name was also Howard, had surgery for thyroid cancer in the 60s at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
He had most of his thyroid removed as well as some of his lymph nodes, and never had any recurrence of the disease. He died about 25 years later from COPD.

Dad had a wonderful baritone voice, but refused to sing after his surgery because he said his voice didn't sound right. We couldn't tell any difference, but he could.

Praying that your pain level will soon be improved, and that you will have the same or better result of your surgery that he had.

Hey CarolMeador,

Thank you for your relating your experience. I too can notice a difference in my voice just like your dad; I can tell there is a difference...

But I'll exchange that for life any day of the week...

Absolutely! How are you feeling now, Howard? Hope some of your pain has started to subside by now.

Hey CarolMeador,

Every day the pain is less and less. The interesting thing about all of this is the lifestyle change I have to implement.

Once you have cancer, you have to go on the offensive every day! The two main culprits are STRESS and NUTRITION...

The nutrition part is hard, but each day I do it it becomes easier and easier...

Thank You for the follow up - It's really appreciated!

Glad to hear you're feeling better, Howard. You are taking positive steps to improve your diet and deal with your stress. And your positive attitude in spite of your pain is also a healing factor for you. Have a great weekend, Howard.

Hey Howard,
I only had half of my thyroid removed before I joined WA and I laid around most of the day so my hat is off to you!!

Dude. My sister was just diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had an 8hr surgery to remove her thyroid and surrounding lymph nodes. Based on her experience, I can only imagine the pain you’re enduring. And to take time to write a post for WA? You’re a beast! My heart goes out to you. Wishing you a speedy recovery!!

Hey JoanMarie,

Thank you for your comments. They are very encouraging. I wish you much success here at WA!

I am hoping for a speedy recovery for you, take it easy and give yourself some time to heal.

Wayne

Great advise Wayne...Not only do I have to give myself time to heal, but I have to make some major changes as well.

Thank You,
Howard

Love that photo of your happy face, now that you are on the mend. We wish you a speedy recovery.
We have lived healthy lives for as long as we can remember but even this does not exempt any of us from genetic predispostions. Thank goodness yours was caught in time.
Wishing you good health and happiness. That equals success!

Thanks CandP,

Really appreciate the kind words.

Keep learning and spreading the word about the impact of diet and lifestyle on good health, Howard. You might also read Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It by Dr. David Brownstein.

Great post. Hope you're recovery is swift and that you are disease-free for good. I'll keep you in my prayers, of course.
My husband's sister had thyroid cancer and had it resected many years ago and has never had problems since. i wish the same for you.
Friend of mine was diagnosed with hypertension and ate whatever he wished prior to the diagnoses and started the keto diet, blood pressure normalized within a week. Not only that he seems so much better, happier, no mood swings, it's so strange to see how he's just so...normal!
You've given wonderful advice in a time of challenges to help others - that says so much about you.
Thank you for the post, it's the first thing that caught my eye when I logged in.
Please continue to tell us about your journey to wellness. And this is something, by the way, that you can share with many others...very good advice, indeed.

Thank you for your kind words...They are very encouraging.

Howard

Sorry to hear this. I wish you a fast recovery :)

Thank you for your concern...

Howard
