This appeared on my laptop today while I was writing content...

Google’s John Mueller provided new information about the new Mobile First Index. The big news is that desktop only sites will be completely dropped from the index, gone. Additionally, there are bugs related to m-dot sites and affirmed that the date for switching over to a mobile index is firm and not likely to change.
There is another statement that Muller made that says: "it was a huge internal undertaking that has resulted in some bugs that will not be fixed."
Bugs that will not be fixed?
What's going on here?
Should we be concerned about this???

Could someone here explain exactly what this means for myself and other Wealthy Affiliate members moving forward...
It sounds as if Google is indexing mobile content only starting in March 2021...
They are completely abandoning desktop site content from getting indexed.
I would appreciate imput from WA members...

I think as Howard has said in the comment section, theme choice will be important. Having themes that are 'mobile-friendly'.
Reading the article, it stipulates that most of the current indexing is done with a 'smartphone Googlebot'.
It's only content that is 'not accessible' on a mobile phone that will get ignored.
So, we have to keep that in mind when we are creating content.
One thing we can do is when we publish, see how our content displays on a mobile phone.
I'm sure that someone with a better understanding of what is or isn't accessible via mobile, will step up and let us know.

You can always run individual posts through the 'mobile friendly checker' in Google search console.
I would imagine, seeing how popular Generate Press is, that it will be mobile optimised.
Thanks Howard, I've read your comment and it pretty much confirms how I was reading your post and the article.
Unfortunately there will be some who add two and two together and make five, as that's more melodramatic, which in turn makes others worry unnecessarily.
I use Generate Press - It's very mobile friendly.
If you are using Generate Press then you should be OK...

Oh, dear me, now it is getting complicated and I do not understand most of what is said in the article. I know that my sites are mobile friendly, but suppose that will not be enough? I do hope Kyle or Carson will chime in to explain well what this is all about.

Sorry, Howard, but I did read the article, but I often do not understand the technical terminology. What I did understand is that is sounds rather grim and one individual decides over what billions of website owners are supposed to do,. That is dictatorship.

IMHO, Howard, Google NEEDS to be broken up (as do all of the other tech Giants! I prefer desktops and do NOT want to change, and some person who thinks they are God should not taken it upon themselves to dictate how everyone should operate! Internet FREEDOM needs to return!

It's absolutely amazing to me how 1 guy, 1 company, gets to make decisions that affect hundreds of millions of online business owners.

I'm going to attempt to explain whats going on although I'm far from being the guy to try to do this:
Here it goes:
Apparently, there are hundreds of millions of people in the world who do not own a laptop or a desktop.
So what Google has decided to do is to give people in poor countries the same access to content as people in wealthier countries.
Nobody is going to say it like I just did, but basically, Google is trying to "level the playing field".

Here's the bottom line:
1) This is where your WordPress theme is super-critical!
If you have a WordPress theme that automatically optimizes your content for mobile then understand what I'm about to say:
You Will Be Just FINE!
You Do Not Need To Worry...
2) Going forward, when you finish a piece of content, check how your content displays on your mobile device FIRST...
From this point forward always have the following rule:
Mobile FIRST, Desktop Second...
It's mobile-first from now on with Google...Period
3) I would check all of my past content to see how it shows up on a smartphone.
4) Depending on how it appears, you may have to make some very necessary adjustments to tho your post is structured.

Ok, Howard, I read this article too. I understand not everything I must confess. I will now wait and see what happens. On my websites I stick to a certain layout for all my posts and adds are only in the sidebar and footer. I hope for the best.
