Who is yelling here

I don't know if every WA member knows the signification of bold, italic, bigger font size. But sometimes I have to go backwards on my computer, because there's somebody yelling at me! Why?

The nicest way to yell is using capitals. This may be sometimes ok, but used too often, I get a liitle headache. The bold way of yelling is known and accepted, but here the same rule as before, don't use the yelling too much.

Now I 'm coming to the super dupper yelling. In the middle of a normal text you insert a H1 or H2 text, not a title or a subheader, no a normal text.

Ouiiiiiih, that hurts. Did I something wrong that you're yelling at me or did you something wrong and you try to convince me by yelling loud like a street salesman?

Think about it when you format your text.

I agree as soon as a person starts yelling we tend to see red or switch off...so I like to remain calm until the yelling finishes and then sort out the problem.Good post!

Good blog with humour!
Some people may not be aware of the implications of their writings (capital, small, italized, etc.) hehe. . . so perhaps we got to be more patient with them :)

tHaNkS gIlUdI! (i am just not sure how we categorized this type of writing :) - "alternate big and small letters")

Alterbig

Don't know exactly wat it means . . . .
MS Word Thesaurus neither does :)

Hi Giludi,
I don't use caps as I have heard that it's considered to be yelling. (Although I don't know who decided this.)
However, it is necessary to retain the ability to use emphasis in cases where emphasis is required and serves a valid purpose. Consequently, I still use bold and italics where necessary. I feel there is a danger that people are becoming oversensitive and have a tendency to see an insult where no such insult exists, or is intended, rather like road rage. When I am driving, if someone pulls out in front of me, is that intended as a personal insult, or did the other driver simply forget to look in his/her mirror?
I think a chill pill is the best medicine.
All the best,
Brandon

Totally agree with you.

I had to laugh at this. It seems like most of the time the writer doesn't understand the implication of using all caps. I don't even use all caps in my headers, although I do make them bold so they will stand out.

It is true, in the Internet the unwritten (sometimes written) rule is that writing while using caps means yelling. Sometimes it's OK to write a word or two in caps to emphasize something. But the whole sentences (except titles) should not be in caps.

Better to use bold and italic. In fact it is good if you can find something to emphasize in every paragraph. Because people don't read the text word by word. They scan it. Emphasizing more important things help them and you too. :)

But it should not be done too much. The truth is, if you emphasize everything, you don't emphasize anything.

Now this is the truth that many, many, many people fail to understand. They tend to think, that EVERYTHING that they tell, is soooooooooo important, so they write all their sentences and paragraphs in caps. And that is awful. Not only awful. In fact, they don't emphasize anything because... You already know the answer :)

Now look, I wrote the word "everything" in caps to give it a very strong emphasize. What we do, we unconsciously translate the text into voice (or how I wanted to say that sentence) so this very strong emphasizing translates as almost screaming. If it is only one word, it is not yet. But if you continue, it clearly is.

I have learned to emphasize using bold and italic so one of the examples you can find here: http://egonsarvreviews.com/fetchasgoogle

As you see, using bold is not yelling. But as you scroll down it helps you to scan the text, right?

Hope, it helped :)

Exactly

As a publisher I must agree that most of our readers are only scanning our content. But must disagree regarding your examples of your blog. This is a jerking between the 3 basic typographical forms (normal, bold and italic) without even thinking about semantics. But perhaps this is the wrong place to discuss. Will make a specific training about this.

Not so sure this is yelling, using caps, bold is a great tool to point out important information. I use them sparingly all the time, not to yell, but, since we are writing, and not talking, or looking at our audience, we need tools to help us get across information that is essential or non essential text :) Just my opinion,

I agree with you SonjaHelga. It is a tool, which is not to say that it isn't overused. When used sparingly, it can be very effective without being rude.

And, yelling is not always bad... sometimes, it means excitement. After all, we do not talk in monotone. Often, our voices go way up, or way down. And, in text, it is not always easy to duplicate this.

Nice to point that out. I have found that some people don't know that Caps is yelling or shouting.
Thanks for sharing.
Have a great weekend!
Kim

I agree with you. I believe that bold and bigger text is only good for headings. The capitalization should only be on the first letter of the sentence or on an abbreviation like OK. You would think that is yelling but when you do spell check to ok, you get OK.

Maybe someone is just making a point, and that is about the only way to make it stand out from the rest of the text :) It's NOT always about yelling. It's all in the context it is used in....

Thanks for your reflection, this will be one of my next trainings here: how to attract attention without yelling.
