Would you try to:

1. write excellent contents;

2. understand Google;

3. do both.

Would appreciate a brief explanation along with your choice.

Wealthy Affiliate rocks!

P.S. Just want to quickly add: I bet you still see websites with spun and crappy articles on page 1 and above 'great' contents. Please consider this factor while you answer.

Cheers.

You must been on my site, haha. If your content is good, you shouldn't have any problem with Google.

I am happy you are doing well. Good luck!

I focus on writing good content that can help people.

I can't control Google. And I don't think it's worth the time or effort trying to figure them out. Or guess at what they are doing or will be doing. As long as I have the SEO basics covered, I am ok with that.

Love the way you think. :)
But the sad part is those who 'know' Google could make more money with mediocre or 'just below' the average writing.

I am not convinced that anyone who does not work at Google knows Google. There are probably some good guessers, but I don't think Google shares everything with industry.

I cannot agree more!

I used to think the same, but all of us change. I am no exception.

With the latest Google algorithm update - Fred - we can see that Google is getting more serious about quality over quantity. Think about it. Google is all about search. If they cannot continue to provide quality search results to people, will they stay relevant and in business?

Here's an article about Fred - http://searchengineland.com/googles-fred-update-hit-low-value-content-sites-aimed-revenue-helping-users-271165

Do a search on - latest google update affect ranking and traffic - and you will see many articles about this.

It takes time for the search bots to apply the new rules and detect websites with low quality, spun or crappy articles. But it is happening. And they will find out soon. And those sites will find their ranking drop.

In fact many websites have already reported massive drop in rankings due to Fred - again, see the above link for more about this.

Future algorithm updates will look more into this. And websites that continue to spin and provide low quality will no longer be able to rank high.

I would agree with you to a large extent. But you would still see articles with mediocre contents above quality contents. It is possible for the software to detect quality only to an extent like grammar or relevance. But yes, there is no chance for articles with grammar errors or loaded with keywords that did well 5-10 years back.

Thank you very much for your message!

hm, I haven't read the article about Fred yet but from what you say deciding what is a 'quality' article could get very subjective - some time back people were worried that information that was not mainstream would get penalized...that becomes relevant in the health niche world where 'alternatives' and big pharma already have quite a battle going on and big pharma has already blocked the media from talking about things such as vaccines

Yes, the term 'quality' here is subjective. But now anything with poor grammar or irrelevance would get penalized, which was not the case say, five to ten years back. Again, a piece with 'okay' writing quality could score higher over quality writing (which any professional writer could detect) if one knows the way around Google.
On the other hand, a 'great' piece of writing would not even be visible if the writer has neglected the basic on-page SEO.

Thank you for your message!

must be tough for people with English as a second language...hm, and even native speakers are sloppy!

Thanks, Gautam!

What are your thoughts on the topic, Rebecca?!

I think I am writing great posts, Gautam! The thing is that I am not sure that I do understand Google!

I think you should be okay as long as you are doing the basic on-page optimization right, Rebecca.

I guess so, Gautam!

I am probably a bit naive and bucolic here...Although I guess I shoukd be doing both, at the moment, I only try to write quality content on the subjects I like. In fact, I haven't even joined Jaaxy on permanent basis.

I just find it difficult enough to write comprehensive posts about subjects I like, let alone to star trying focusing on words that perhaps are difficult to incorporate on any given context.

I am perfectly aware that if I want to be successful in business and I also desire a rapid google ranking, I have to incorporate the llow competition key words sooner rather than later.

In respond to your question whether I consider it fair or not, I just try to accept matters as they come, without questioning the fairness of it. However, in an ideal world, perhaps it would be expected to achieve a Google ranking proportional to the quality of the context on your posts!

Thanks for your message. :)

Excellent insights!

good post

thanks :)

I do both - I just figure I want to be the best I can be. If that means doing both then I do both.

Perfect attitude - thanks for your message.

Both . I write naturally and have a passion for it. and I recognize Google as having the power to deliver traffic to my sites!

Thanks, Mike. Just repeating the question - do you think it is fair if someone with crappy contents ranks higher either because they know the way around Google or by a sheer 'coincidence'?

Absolutely not!

True but it happens OFTEN.

I am, first and foremost, a writer, so that is what I do.
I need Google to like what I write, so I need to understand what Google likes.
That means, in order to be successful doing this, need to 'do' both!

Mickeyb

That's great, but do you think it is fair if someone with crappy contents ranks higher because they know the way around Google?

Life is not really fair, my friend. Would I like that? NO!

Is that the way it works? YES!

I would do both, Guatam and here's why: To achieve the best SEO, I would know I would need to write the best content using great low competition long-tail keywords that are getting enough searches..

In order to incorporate the best and most SEO-effective long-tailed keywords in my great content, I would want to understand updates to Google's ever-changing algorithm as best as possible, so I can constantly tailor those keywords in the most SEO- effective way within my content.

Thank you Kajjo for sharing your insights.
Cheers.
