*** So, this new model "hypothesized" the entire content since it was using the September 2023 knowledge cutoff,! To be fair, it is a "preview" model.
Also, this model is still not accurate in terms of article length. It contains 720 words.

Leveraging this tool in conjunction with image-generation models like DALLยทE 3 allows marketers to deliver engaging visual content that resonates with their audience in the fast-paced digital landscape.
I have about twenty Custom GPTs that I created for use in ChatGPT 4o that automatically generate the text and graphics, all in "one go," so I'll be sticking with that model until they get this properly sorted out.
Also, I've read that the new ChatGPT o1 model will be more focused on respecting intellectual property rights when rendering images with DALL-E 3, so that will be an interesting development.
ChatGPT o1-preview Test #2: Ritchie Blackmore
(With me, it always seems to come back to music! Lol)
I asked ChatGPT o1-preview to tell me about Ritchie Blackmore's musical setup. Here is my prompt:
Me: What is the best electric guitar and amplifier to use to get Ritchie Blackmore's sound from the early Deep Purple era in the 1970s? How did he set up his guitar and amplifier? Were there modifications to his guitar and amplifier? Be specific.
It Thought for 19 seconds and provided me with the following answer:
To replicate Ritchie Blackmore's iconic sound from the early 1970s Deep Purple era, it's essential to understand the specific equipment and modifications he used. Blackmore's tone was a combination of his unique playing style, heavily modified guitars, powerful amplifiers, and select effects. Here's a detailed breakdown:
Electric Guitar
Fender Stratocaster (Late 1960s Models):
- Scalloped Fretboard: Blackmore scalloped the fretboards of his Stratocasters. This involves carving out the wood between the frets, allowing for greater control over string bending and vibrato. It facilitates a lighter touch and more expressive playing.
- Pickups:
- Single-Coil Pickups: He favored vintage-style single-coil pickups for their clarity and brightness.
- Custom Modifications: Blackmore often experimented with different pickups. He sometimes used pre-CBS Fender pickups or had pickups rewound for higher output.
- Electronics:
- Simplified Wiring: He occasionally modified the wiring to his preference, sometimes disconnecting the middle pickup to reduce noise.
- Hardware:
- Standard Tremolo System: While he used the standard Fender synchronized tremolo bridge, he rarely used the tremolo arm and sometimes tightened the springs to keep it stable.
Amplifier
Marshall Major 200-Watt Amplifier Head:
- Powerful Output: The Marshall Major is a 200-watt amplifier, providing massive clean headroom before breaking into overdrive.
- Modifications:
- Preamp Circuit Alterations: Blackmore had his Marshall Majors modified to increase gain and alter the tonal characteristics. This often involved changing the preamp valves and tweaking the circuitry to produce a more aggressive tone.
- Tone Stack Modifications: Some modifications bypassed or altered the tone stack (the EQ section of the amp) to boost certain frequencies and increase overall gain.
- Speaker Cabinets:
- Marshall 4x12 Cabinets: Loaded with Celestion G12H or G12M Greenback speakers, known for their warm midrange and smooth high-end response.
Effects and Additional Equipment
AIWA TP-1011 Reel-to-Reel Tape Recorder:
- Preamp Function: Blackmore used the preamp section of this tape recorder as a boost and tone-shaping tool. He ran his guitar signal through the tape recorder before the amplifier, which added gain, compression, and a unique tonal coloration due to the tape saturation.
Hornby Skewes Treble Booster:
- Boosting Treble Frequencies: Before adopting the AIWA tape recorder, he used this treble booster to push the front end of his amplifier, enhancing sustain and adding a sharper edge to his tone.
Guitar and Amplifier Settings
- Guitar Controls:
- Pickup Selection: Primarily used the bridge pickup for a brighter, cutting tone.
- Volume and Tone Knobs: Often rolled back the tone knob slightly to smooth out any harshness.
- Amplifier Settings (Approximate):Note: Actual settings varied, especially with modified amps.
- Volume: Set high to drive the power tubes into natural overdrive.
- Bass: Around 4.
- Mid: Around 7.
- Treble: Around 6.
- Presence: Around 6.
Reproducing the Sound Today
Guitar Recommendations:
- Fender Ritchie Blackmore Signature Stratocaster:
- Features:
- Scalloped Fretboard: Replicates Blackmore's modification for enhanced playability.
- Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound Flat SSL-4 Pickups: High-output single-coil pickups in the neck and bridge positions.
- Non-Active Middle Pickup: A dummy pickup to maintain the classic Strat appearance while reducing hum.
Amplifier Recommendations:
- Marshall Amplifiers:
- Marshall 1959SLP Plexi Super Lead 100-Watt Head:
- Similar Characteristics: Shares tonal qualities with the Marshall Major, with the ability to produce rich overdrive when cranked.
- Modelling Amps or Pedals:
- Use modern amplifiers or pedals that emulate the tone of a cranked Marshall stack, such as the Marshall Code series or amp simulation software.
Effects Pedals:
- Treble Booster:
- Options:
- BSM RPA Major: Specifically designed to replicate Blackmore's tone.
- Catalinbread Naga Viper: A versatile treble booster that can shape gain and frequency response.
- Tape Saturation/Preamp Pedals:
- Options:
- Strymon Deco: Emulates tape saturation and double-tracking effects.
- TC Electronic Tape Primer: Adds tape-like warmth and compression.
Speaker Cabinets:
- Marshall 1960AX or BX 4x12 Cabinets:
- Speakers: Loaded with Celestion Greenback speakers for vintage tone.
Additional Tips
- Strings and Setup:
- String Gauge: Blackmore used light-gauge strings, typically .009 to .042, facilitating easier bends on the scalloped fretboard.
- Action: A slightly higher action can improve sustain and prevent fret buzz, especially with aggressive playing.
- Playing Technique:
- Expressive Bending and Vibrato: Utilize wide bends and deep vibrato, taking advantage of the scalloped fretboard.
- Pick Attack: Blackmore had a strong pick attack, contributing to the percussive quality of his playing.
- Classical Influences: Incorporate harmonic minor scales and arpeggios, reflecting his neo-classical style.
Summary
To achieve Ritchie Blackmore's early Deep Purple sound:
- Guitar: Use a Fender Stratocaster with a scalloped fretboard and high-output single-coil pickups. The Ritchie Blackmore Signature Stratocaster is an ideal choice.
- Amplifier: Plug into a high-powered Marshall amplifier. If a Marshall Major isn't available, a Plexi-style amp or a modern equivalent with similar tonal characteristics will suffice.
- Effects: Incorporate a treble booster to push the amplifier's front end and consider using a tape saturation effect to emulate the AIWA tape recorder's preamp qualities.
- Cabinet: Use a 4x12 cabinet loaded with vintage-style Celestion speakers like the Greenbacks for authentic tone reproduction.
- Technique: Emulate Blackmore's aggressive playing style, utilizing expressive bends, vibrato, and dynamic pick attack.
By carefully selecting and setting up your equipment to mirror Blackmore's gear and adopting his playing techniques, you'll be well on your way to capturing the essence of his legendary sound from the early Deep Purple era.
A Critical Omission!
Marshall amp with channel jumper cable (red arrow)
The output that ChatGPT o1-preview gave me was very impressive! It really nailed it, except that it did not mention that Ritchie used a channel jumper cable on his amps to connect channel one to channel two, a critical element of his early sound (see image above)! When I asked it specifically about the channel jumper it told me that it was not a part of Ritchie's setup.
I challenged it with the following prompt:
There is clear evidence in various musical magazines that Ritchie used channel jumping on his amplifier. Please take another look at your online resources and clarify for me.
It thought for 17 seconds and corrected itself as follows:
Apologies for the oversight in my previous response.
Upon re-examining available resources, including various musical magazines and interviews, it's evident that Ritchie Blackmore did use channel jumping on his Marshall amplifiers to achieve his distinctive tone during the early Deep Purple era.
Channel Jumping in Ritchie Blackmore's Setup
What Is Channel Jumping?
- Dual Channels on Marshall Amps:
- Vintage Marshall amplifiers, like the Marshall Major 200-watt head used by Blackmore, feature two channels:
- Channel I (High Treble)
- Channel II (Normal)
- Each channel has two input jacks, totaling four inputs.
- Purpose of Channel Jumping:
- Channel jumping involves connecting these channels with a short patch cable, allowing the guitarist to blend the tonal characteristics of both channels.
- This technique results in a fuller, richer tone with more tonal flexibility.
Ritchie Blackmore's Use of Channel Jumping
- Implementation:
- Input Configuration:
- Guitar Input:
- Blackmore plugged his guitar into the first input of Channel I (High Treble).
- Jumping the Channels:
- A short patch cable connected the second input of Channel I to the first input of Channel II (Normal).
- Blending Tones:
- Volume Controls:
- By adjusting the Volume I and Volume II knobs, he could blend the bright, aggressive tone of the High Treble channel with the warmer, fuller sound of the Normal channel.
- Typical Settings:
- Volume I: Set higher for more treble and gain.
- Volume II: Set lower to add body without overpowering the treble.
- Enhancing Gain and Saturation:
- Channel jumping increased the signal hitting the preamp tubes, resulting in more natural overdrive and sustain.
That explanation definitely nailed the jumper cable issue!
So, you still can't assume that AI will give you complete or accurate answers. Always cross-check all facts before you publish!
I think that, eventually, AI will become as accurate or even more accurate than a human researcher's capabilities, but we're not there yet.

Wood-dock Rock by Wack Daffy is my favorite!
o1 mini says the egg came before the chicken, and the reasoning seems sound.
"While the question can be approached from various angles, the scientific and evolutionary consensus is that the egg came first. Eggs as a reproductive mechanism existed far before chickens evolved, and the first true chicken likely emerged from an egg laid by a bird that was not quite a chicken."
Thanks for pointing o1 out, Frank. I'll use it for sure!
You have some good points there, Dave.
I think youโll love the level of detail that o1 can provide, even as a beta model! ๐

Hi Nick
Yeah, those AI models are still in beta release, but they generally give a lot more targeted information than ChatGPT 4o.
It's essential for me to be able to have my GPTs generate text and images simultaneously. Not having that would kill my automation, so I'll continue using 4o until they work it out in the new model.
Hahaha, for me, it's always about the music! ๐ถ ๐

Thanks for sharing all of this, Frank. Very interesting. I thought something was going on because instead of creating the images, it would describe it and then ask if I wanted to create the image. Then it would create it.
Also, something appears a little messed up because I typically use a lot of keyboard shortcuts and it is not allowing me to click Command/Control "C" to copy text. I have to select and then go up under "edit" and copy that way. Could be a glitch...
Karin
Youโre welcome, Karin. ๐
In chat 4o you can create text and images from a single prompt. Right now, chat o1 will only give you the image description, which you can copy into DALL-E 3 or another AI graphic generator to get the image.
The Command/Control "C shortcut still works. Itโs some type of glitch on your end.
Frank ๐ธ
Weird. It is only doing it in ChatGPT. Command/Control "C" works in every other program I use.
Maybe need to shut the old girl down for the night.
Karin
I just tried Command-C again in ChatGPT 4o, and it works fine.
Did you try to do a cold boot on your computer - by shutting it down, not rebooting it?
