Choosing a Niche or Changing Niches

You have chosen to be an entrepreneur, a lot of obstacles await you...

Doubts... fears... naysayers... decisions...

But one of the first decisions that might be scaring you right now is which niche to pick.

Maybe you've already started and aren't quite sure about the niche you chose, this can be tough, it can bring you to quit this journey.

Take it easy.

I'll give you some insights here that will save you some time and headaches.

The reason this feels so overwhelming is that you've entered through the big door, the "I want to be an entrepreneur" door, or the "I want to make money online" door, instead of the "I love this so much that I want to share it with the world" door.

Then you're given the "do something you love" speech...

But shouldn't we all do something we love?

Of course we should, but when we think "what do I love?" we freeze and think "damn I love to exercise, I'll start a fitness blog". Yeah, you and half of the world...

How I lost over 1 year of my life (or did I?)

After I read "The Fastlane Millionaire" by MJ de Marco my World changed. I knew what had been wrong all these years... I wasn't here to perform the job of a robot, I was here to help people, to contribute to changes. I am an entrepreneur. I was sure from that first book.

So I researched, and the first thing I found that sounded exciting was Amazon FBA.

I followed a training, learned everything I could, did my research (not enough), chose the product I wanted to sell, contacted some manufacturers, got some samples, chose one, drafted a contract, produced 500 units and shipped them.

As you can probably imagine, this is not as easy and risk free as launching a website and writing articles, a lot of different skills are required here, which I didn't have.

My product was a bust. I lost money.

I failed on the research part, which is one of the most important, but that's not the reason I lost money. The reason that didn't work is that I wasn't passioned enough about creating bamboo baby towels.

Did I love them? Of course I did, both my daughters still use them, much better than cotton.

But how much did I really help anyone?

My first Hop

But I was still decided to succeed. So I started a blog, informing people about baby care, which eventually turned into natural parenting.

I thought, I might give it a push in sales to my towels.

I was feeling more excited. I was now contributing to help parents find much needed information.

But each time I sat down to write a post for my website, all the research was dreadful...

Yes, I'm happy to help parents, by sharing my experiences, and I think that we should all go back to our roots a little in the parenting world, it has become so mechanical...

But I wasn't happy... I won't go here into the why.

Then I realized I had learned so much about everything. One of the things I love the most is absorbing knowledge, and specifically I was obsessed with everything marketing related.

Another Hop?

I wanted so much to do something in marketing, but I convinced myself I shouldn't be hopping around like crazy... I needed to focus on one thing to succeed!

So I kept working on my parenting website, and learning more marketing techniques. By then I knew everything there was to know about the most advanced marketing practices and was trying to implement them to my tiny 6 article blog.

If you've been here for a while, you already know that without content everything else is useless.

I even tried hiring a couple of writers to add to my blog, I didn't like it.

But I wanted to share my knowledge, there were so many people needing marketing assistance...

I started helping friends launch businesses, it excited me! But it didn't excite them so much...

And I also did some crazy affiliate marketing here and there, trying to take advantage of my knowledge.

Then I found WA and it gave me an excuse to focus on what I really loved, but seeing what I had achieved with my previous blog, I couldn't just let go of it... So I multitasked. And achieved little to no progress in each...

The Calling

I know what I am now. I am a Digital Marketing Strategist (thanks Facebook for title suggestion). And I am great at marketing strategies.

The website I launched with WA focuses on helping people start their own businesses and this is my passion.

I have helped a few people here one on one, and the pleasure it gives me to see them succeeding is undescribable.

I've recently managed to stop all work on my previous website and am trying to focus only on anything that pertains to this area.

We are all experts at something

One of the books I read from an entrepreneur I admire, Russell Brunson, is called "Expert Secrets" and he explains how we are all experts at something, we all have a super power that can be applied to something we love so much that will make it unique.

So here's my tip to you, think about the things you are passioned enough to become obsessed (there shouldn't be many), something that has managed to keep you awake at night. And think about your super power, what do people usually tell you how good you are at?

If you put these 2 things together, you've found your perfect niche.

If you've already been working in a niche, but have been thinking it might not be the right one, than you're probably correct.

Can you make money out of a niche you're not passioned about? Can you still be successful if you're in the 'wrong' niche? Absolutely!

There's no such thing as the wrong niche! There's only the niche that you'll have to work for and it will almost feel like a job, and the one you are excited every morning to start working on.

Whatever your choice is, don't regret it. I don't regret any of mine.

For more on being an expert I recommend this insightful article from our founder, Kyle.

Thanks for reading.

Go out there and have fun!

Francesca

Thank you for your nice comment Francesca.

I wish you all the success here at WA.

Anything you need, feel free to contact me!

Hey Fran - nice one :-)

You're absolutely right here, and I think the training pushes you into niche selection a little quickly. It does say you can make money with ANY niche but it stops short of saying you'll need to write about it every day for the rest of your life :-) Okay... :-)

My passions have changed over the years. I probably have more 'interests' now than 'passions'. My current niche selection is a 'heavy interest' :-)

Thing is passions CAN wane and change over time so even if you start out passionate, there's no guarantee you'll wake up feeling the same way in 6 months, a year or 5 years down the line. Having said that, some of my passions have lasted 20 years and I did well out them :-) They are now interests :-)

Ian

That's absolutely true that passions can change into interests and sometimes even fade. I believe that happens out of the way you give them use.

For example, I decided not to work as a pilot a few years back because I worked for years in aviation and it burned my passion for it, so I thought I will never fly for money.

I think the important thing is that we adapt and don't fear changing if needed.

Thanks for your comment Ian and I wish you the best with decisions ahead, no what your decision is, it will be the best for you, don't fear it nor regret it.

Ha! Ha! Well, we've ll made the wrong choice and it didn't always turn out to be the best one, even in hindsight :-) But then, you never really know...

Can totally empathise with your pilot story. I burned out of one passion (I didn't realise I was burning until too late) and drifted out of another.

Ian

I don't regret any decisions, I believe they have been for the best, for my growth. But I get you.

I've also burned a few along the way. Hehe.

Thank you, Fran, for sharing your experience. Not easy for you along the way but you have learned a lot and now finally here at WA!
Thank you for your advice too! We have to work hard for whatever niche we choose! :o)

I did a lot more along the way but I didn't want to make this all about myself ;)

Thanks for your comment Terand. Hard work is definitely a must no matter the niche, there are no magic formulas.

Yeah, Fran! Hard work! 👍💪💪💪

For me it was an easy choice, because already a lifetime active in my now these days niche even it is very competitive. But like you said I don't mind to work in this field to make it happen. At least I can say that I only have hobbies that I busy with.
Have a great day
Tommy

Awesome Tommy. If it excites you, you're in the right place.

There are so many things to consider when choosing a niche, its definitely worth spending some time thinking long and hard about it before diving in.

As long as it doesn't stop you from starting. That's the most important thing, even you have to make changes down the line.

Great post and reminds me of a conversation I had with myself only the other day!
I was asking myself what niche I would be in if I was not doing the make money online niche.
We have a few other websites - natural remedies, yoga, local business consulting, but none of them fill me with a passion.

Hence we are sticking with the MMO niche as I cannot wait to jump out of bed in the morning to have even more success which we can pass on to others.

Thanks for sharing your story
Have a great day

Jon and Debbie

If that's how it makes you feel, I'd bet that's the one you'll help the most people and be happiest in.

Thanks for sharing and your feedback.
Have an awesome day and have fun doing what you do.

Thank you Fran for sharing this post. I have drawn two lessons;
1. Ignore the naysayers since they bring doubts and fears; leading one to abandoning a good decision.
2. Find a niche that excites you (one that steals your sleep)
I will focus on these two.

I hope you manage to lose that sleep Ahimbe, it's an incredible feeling.

Good luck and have fun.
