Manually Updating Your Plugins vs Auto-Updating
It's time for your daily dose of Wordpress Wisdom! This may be something most of us already know now that we're experienced, having gone through WA's awesome training, but if you remember back to your humble beginnings you may remember when you were brand new to building websites and a question about updating your plugins manually vs automatically was a very relevant question.
It's this exact question I saw a few days ago in the members area so I thought I'd explain why we update our plugins MANUALLY as opposed to automatically.
Check out the video and see why!

Hi Erik, I’ve never had issues with automated updates before. I just wonder why enabled auto-updates don’t work on the WA platform? Just like scheduled posts that don’t publish?
It’s hard to keep up manually with so many websites….
If you’re already there working on your site and in your back office the notification and manual update doesn’t take any time at all. Even if you have like 10 plugins to update the whole process takes like 10 seconds. I honestly don’t think it’s hard at all to keep up with.
And even if it’s a website you don’t get around to too often. If you just check in every couple of weeks the update process takes only seconds and you’re done 👍🏼
As far as auto-publishing not working I’ve never used that feature. That’s not a part of WA though.
Totally agree Eric! It's so much easier to find any conflicts when we adapt this approach!!

Thanks, Eric. I landed here because a member was asking or wondering what to do with those red notifications. I never thought about manually updating plugins and themes because I have been taught that it's a good practice to auto-update them all for security reasons.
However, as you mentioned, things might be working differently here at the WA than they do somewhere else such as on Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc. Thanks for the tips.
John
Right, you never want to auto-update any plugins because then if a few days go by and your website suddenly isn't working you wouldn't know which actions have been taken in the background that could have possible affected the site.
Even if a plugin isn't updated on your end, a change to it via third party update can also affect your site, but at least with manual updating it's one less question you'll have as far as what changed.
Agreed. I never thought of it from that angle. Now I know. All my plugins are auto-updating. I recently had an issue where I ended up redesigning the homepage those nothing actually was wrong with it.
The issue was a "shortcode" I inserted to display the "Tip Me" message for my Kofi-com website for donations. I only realized later on after making changes I didn't need to make. That was a lesson learned the hard way. Thanks again for this wisdom as you call it.
John
that's all a part of building websites. Every mistake is a lesson. Comes with the territory. Now because of that issue you had you're that much smarter and more prepared for the next issue 👍🏼
