Is Stealing Bad?

Ever since I was a little boy, I was told stealing was wrong. I think my mom told me I stole my fist candy at the age of three. Yeah, I was kind of a bad kid. I did not grow up being a thief, though.

In high school when I didn’t get my homework done, I would barter. I would trade my math homework for any class that I didn’t get my homework done, and it was usually writing some kind of paper.

I’m very good at yes and no answers and math in general. I like questions that have one answer. Anyway, my biggest rejection would be, “No Mr./Ms. Teacher will be able to tell you copied. I would always say, “Trust me I am only going to use your paper for notes, give me 30 minutes.” Well I got through my high school years doing this and never once was I accused of stealing another person’s work.

I received my bachelor’s degree in May 2016. On every single piece of paper from a professor stating what needed to be done there was a warning on it stating that plagiarism is not tolerated and you could be expelled for doing so.

Working a 40-60-hour week, 3 kids in the house, college full time, and a wife that works full time can be exhausting. The best writers are top notch when it comes to thievery. Let’s take Thomas Jefferson, for instance. His work on the Declaration of Independence was mainly high jacked from John Locke. Take a look at some of Oscar Wilde’s work he lifted work form anyone and everyone. And, my favorite of all time, Shakespeare got some of his best plots from Roman and Greek plays.

I leave you with this quote from an author unknown to myself.

“To steal from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research.”

I like being original and I don't like stealing; but I see what you mean about research. When I research I try to reword and take from many different sources so as not to copy someone else's
work verbatim. Is that stealing?

Thanks Edward. I think that by acknowledging the source of anything we use, we're not plagiarizing or stealing it.We're building a relationship with whoever originated it. Please acknowledge me if you choose to repeat this. With love. Jo

Thanks for sharing

It's done in recipes all the time A southwestern omelet is great. Yet it's a unique spin stolen in part from an original omelet recipe. Repurposing content is not theft!

Bad artists copy. Good artists steal.-Picasso

I do not believe in stealing but I do believe the research part though.

I also strongly disagree with stealing but I do agree with the quote about gaining research from many because it's how you learn. Knowledge is power:)

I love that quote! Ain't every article on the internet a form of plagiarism? When you get your knowledge from books, articles, newspapers or even wiki. Somebody did write something about it earlier, you just use that knowledge and add a little bit from yourself to it

Stealing can be ethical, although it's not part of my moral code. But hey, I love the quote you left about stealing from many people. In fact, that's what I'm doing right now. :)
