Website Sold For $30,000

Last Update: March 17, 2019

I had no plans to sell any of my sites but the guy who bought my site last year for $40,000 emailed this week and asked if I had anything to sell.

I showed him a website I started last May and we negotiated a bit and decided on $30,000. It was a good deal so I took it.

Pretty crazy. I was not expecting that.

This site was done with the best of strategy I've been talking about for a while now. These Amazon sites have a high resale value because they're easy to manage and you can update the articles so they last for years.

I've been working on a make money from home site since early December and I hired a writer to work on another "best of" site.

Now I'm just going to focus on growing these sites now and I might make a course on making Amazon sites. I've never made a course before so I'd have to look into how that's done.

If you're struggling my advice is to study affiliate sites that are already successful and just copy their keyword strategy. I don't mean take their keywords but study the type of keywords they use.

For example, if you're in the make money at home niche you'll want to spend 90% of your time writing reviews of different courses. It's proven to work. There's no guess work here.

If you're in a niche like outdoors or any niche with physical products over $100 you'll want to do best of posts.

It's really simple. I do nothing special besides targeting the right keywords. That's it. No backlinks. No blogger outreach. No email marketing. No buying traffic. No social media traffic. None of that.

Best of's and reviews convert so that's what I stick to. You'll get the same results if you can use the right keyword strategy in the right niche.

So if you're making no money start writing best of's and reviews for six months straight and see what happens. I guarantee if you spend 2 hours a day doing this you'll make money and you can have a site worth $30,000 or $40,000 or $50,000 faster than you expect.

If you can get a website to make $3,000 a month for more than 6 months in a row it's worth $100,000. You can get to $3,000 a month in probably 100 different niches if you write reviews and best of's.

I hope you got something out of this post and I hope you start making sales!

This strategy has always intrigued me. Create a solid portfolio of sites ranking and selling a solid 2-4k/mo. Then possibly flipping/selling some for big profit and starting the process over. I sort of think of this as an online real-estate venture of creating and flipping. Thanks for the insight on the best of's and reviews to help the sites convert more. Good luck in the future.

Is it okay to write a "best of" for something that is not pertaining to one of your blogs or should the comparison be on something from one of your own blogs?

If it's from your own blog/post it would be more like a review rather than a "bet of" I think. Right??

Not exactly sure what you mean, but your best of post should be about products that relate to your niche.

The point of keeping on task with your niche is that it could possibly stray from the point and cost you potential followers. If I had something important to say than i would either form a post as a comment item rather than a review or ideally find someone else's site that you could place a comment on with a link back to your own site.

Hi Dylan,

I enjoyed your article.

Can you tell me what you mean by "Best of" strategy?

I'm guessing it is discussing the best "gym equipment" or the best "diet drink". More or less a comparison of products.

Just want to make sure before I venture out to do it.

Thanks for the help,

Marion

Hi Dylan!

Thanks for your post! Great advice! I am also focusing on getting high-rank on Google by choosing the right keywords. Still didn't happen, just on Yahoo and Bing, but not on Google yet.

I think that getting a high rank on Google is the right way to go, at least for me!

Best regards,
Igor

Incredible information. I had no idea people might want to buy my business. First I need to build a solid one. Then, who knows.

Thank you for sharing the info regarding Best of's and Reviews.
I did my first review. Not the best style, but not so difficult to put together. I will find my pattern. Linda

Just curious, how do you sell a website? After you agree upon the sale price with the buyer and your check clears the bank, do you just give them your login username/password and that's it? Then they change the login info and put the website on their preferred host?

Usually you go through a site like Empire Flippers but this time we did it directly. You get an escrow.. which is a company that holds the money until everything is transferred.

I transfer the domain to him and then the escrow put the money in my bank account.

How much can i sell a website for if it's not making any money. It's basically been sitting for 6+ months with only 3 posts. My aim is to write another 30 posts and see if the traffic grows but honestly i hate writing on this topic. It's a niche aimed at women and sometimes i feel like blowing my head off. That's how torturous it feels!

If there are only 3 posts and you hate writing on the topic, maybe you should just start another website on a topic you´re actually interested in. A website with 3 posts that is not making any money, I don´t think anyone will buy it.

Probably nothing tbh.. I'd just pick another niche.

The only thing i can think of is the domain name is nice and old and the website has optimised for SEO. I might just go list it and see what happens

Which platform did you sell your website?

First time was through Empire Flippers, the second one he sold directly since it's the same guy who bought his first site (through an escrow so he doesn't have to pay the 15% fee).

Great advice! Something I’m struggling with is the products in my niche range from as low as $5 to $30 per item. Many times people will buy more than one at a time, though, but only once have I earned a commission on an order greater than $100 in value. Any advice there? I am thinking I’m really going to have to create my own product to make money, but this is challenging in my niche, too.

I'm a big fan of the best of articles. I have been using them on a site I run. Been having some good success with it.

Great job! Make sure you do the website through an escrow payment for the money transfer. You can do it with PayPal, but you can get ripped off that way. You didn't happen to do PayPal for the transaction did you? Just looking out for you :)

I always change the DNS when the payment is released, too. I don't want to get screwed out a big payday.

I actually did a training on how to sell a website at:

I have an escrow with escrow.com.. this is someone I've sold to in the past so there's some trust built up.

sounds good. I have heard a lot of horror stories on how people have lost their websites because of people ripping them off through PayPal :).

I bet.. luckily the buyer is legit and he's the one who recommended an escrow.

Inspirational, Dylan.

Do you have a blog where you talk about your best of Amazon sites? I'd love to read it if you have.

And how do you find your potential site buyers? I would think half the battle for flipping sites is getting them in front of prospective buyers.

Thanks
Phil

I have a training here at Wealthy Affiliate about Amazon sites: And there's sites where there's buyers like Empire Flippers and Flippa. I like Empire Flippers the best.

Hi Dylan! Congrats on your sale, it's awesome!

I have a question btw.

Most of my "best of" are on page 2-5. I am in a very competitive niche (health, weight loss) so it's a little hard to get them on page 1.

Can I boost its rank if I add more products?
Reply
dylanrieger Premium
Try adding some more content and keep updating them. How old is your site?
Reply
danijel95 Premium
Okay, I will update them as soon as possible. Currently, I have top 10 products, I will add 5 more.

The site is 15 months old.

Congrats to you Dylan,
glad to see you found something that works for you and you are sharing for whoever would like to follow the same strategy.
As many just like me here are new, could you elaborate a bit more on what you mean by "Reviews and Bests of". The terms may seem trivial but those just starting in affiliate marketing could be thrown off.
Thanks and congrats again.
Reply
dylanrieger Premium
Best of just means posts like best affiliate marketing courses or best car stereo system. Review would be reviewing the individual car stereos.

I created a training based on the best of posts that you can read here. https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/dylanrieger/training

Congratulations, yeah that is crazy but in a great way. I enjoyed reading your post and I learning what I should be doing.

I see everyone talking about Amazon niche sites maybe I should try one of those too after I get these other blog off the ground.

Thanks for sharing your story, this gives me hope.

Congrats to you - well done once again! How do you put a value on a site - is it 20 times the monthly net profit value?
Also is it difficult to navigate a sale in Flippa? Is there things that should be done to be successful and are there things you should avoid?
The reason why i ask is I am considering selling a site during the course of this year and I have no experience at it...
Thanks if you get the time to reply

It's anywher from 18 times to 32 times monthly - it depends on site age and other things like that. I've sold on Flippa and Empire Flippers - it's pretty easy. Empire Flipper is definitely better but your site has to be worth over $20,000 to sell it there.

Congratulations Dillon!!!

A repeat customer is proof that you are building solid websites. Had you bought traffic, used a lot of shortcuts, or questionable techniques - the guy would not have come back. Not that I doubted you... But repeat customers are the greatest compliment a business can receive.

As usual, thanks for sharing the good solid advise. I'm getting closer to actually focusing on my online businesses and following your advise.
