I'm a copywriter and novelist living in the midlands of South Carolina. Most of my writing experience has been fiction and technical projects, but recently I've ventured into salesletters and writing for the web.

My passion is writing novels. However, my novels don't pay the bills. In fact, the cost of editing and design of my first novel, Some Glad Morning, was quite substantial and still met with a barrage of rejection letters from publishers. Fortunately, I was able to publish it myself on Amazon where it earns a modest return.

It is my hope that through WA I can consistently earn enough to self-publish my novels at the rate of at least one a year. This would change life radically for me. Beyond that, I intend to continually challenge myself to build an ever growing online business.

The power of the internet to create income has always fascinated me. I'm thrilled to be here at Wealthy Affiliate. It's my hope that WA will make it easier to master the technical stuff so I can focus on content creation.

Since joining WA, it's been my pleasure to unsubscribe from the legion of emails sent from affiliate marketing gurus.

Gary,

I believe in Affiliate Internet Marketing but I just don't know how to do it on my own. I need help, coaching and training. I paid a small fee last year but the coaches did not want to work me because I did not have a revolving credit line to use. I have spent the past year trying to figure out how to get into this on my own but have not gotten far at all. I know the possibilities and I know they are real but I have just found the right opportunity and opened the right door.

I am wanting to work from home and have more time to pursue my personal passions to make a difference in the world. I recently reached out to another company for affiliate training and paid for their first course. However I had a weird feeling and did a search to gather if it was a scam. While I found it was not really a scam it is also not feasible for me as again I just don't have lots of cash flow right now to put into a campaign in hopes for a big pay out.

I read your blog and this intrigued me so I decided to look into it. I have just signed up and am at the first step to getting started. I am also doing to some research on this solution as well but if large amounts of cash or revolving credit lines are not required and this will still teach me what I need to know then I am all for it.

I hope you will be able to assist and guide me through the process as I so desperately would like to do this full time and leave the hectic hospitality technology industry.

Best Regards,
Tim Presley

Hi, Tim!

It's great to see you here. You can learn everything you need to know about affiliate marketing in Wealthy Affiliate. I'll help you every step of the way. If there is one thing we're good at, it's helping each other succeed.

We have only two membership levels, free and premium. That's it. You will not find any upsells or hidden expenses. I promise you don't need large amounts of cash or revolving credit. We don't play those games.

The premium membership level includes everything you need to build an online business including secure website hosting. Premium membership is $19 the first month if you go premium the first week of your free membership. After that it's $49 a month. If you pay annually, it works out to about $29 a month.

Try premium at $19 for your first month and see if this is for you.

Learning to succeed as an affiliate marketer does not have to cost very much. Beyond the training, support and tools you have in Wealthy Affiliate, you must put in the time and effort to make it happen for yourself.

As your business grows and earns an income, it will be wise to reinvest some of your earnings back into your business in paid advertising from Bing, Google, and FaceBook. That's covered in the advanced training and you won't get there for several months.

Dive into the Certification Course and keep taking the next step. If you get stuck ask a question in the white field at the top of the screen. I'll see it and be sure you get an answer. Or, ask a question at the bottom of each lesson, again, I'll see and come help. Or, you can respond to any message I've sent you.

Often other members will help you too, that's the Wealthy Affiliate culture. We help each other. When you're a premium member, you can send private message to me and other premium members.

Since you have some experience with expensive programs, I want to make something clear. Often those kinds of programs make outrageous promises about how quickly you can make money. Because they convince people they will soon be rich or can soon replace a job, people pay them large sums of money.

However, in reality, get-rich-quick doesn't work. The skills you will learn in Wealthy Affiliate are rock solid and follow the industry's best practices and proven business principles, however, they are not magic.

Please prepare yourself mentally to work at this for months before you see results. That is the reality of building an online business. It will take time to learn new skills and put them into practice and still more time for the search engines to respond.

I like to compare building an online business to farming. Much preparation and nurturing of ideas is required before the harvest.

I'm here for you,
Gary

Hello Gary, I thought there would be an organic wealthy affiliate website ready to go. Will I have to build a website from scratch? I don’t have a niche that I can start up just like that. If I had to choose a niche it would be cooking recipes.
Reply
GaryHorton Premium
Hi, Edna!

As you go through the training you'll learn that ready made websites are worthless. To rank in the search engines, each site must be original. However, with the SiteRubix Builder, you can have the foundation for a website in place in minutes. Then it's just a matter of adding content and making adjustments.

Cooking recipes is a terrific niche with a lot of potential. I encourage you to go with that. Follow the training. It will walk you through building an original website and adding content.

You can reach me by responding to any of my messages.

I'm here for you,
Gary

A cooking blog is a fantastic idea! I hate cooking and I could even fake it if I had to because *everyone* eats so you just have to chat:
• About the waffles you made
• Or the coffee getting you through the week (especially the coffee maker you love best)
• Or the difference it made in Thanksgiving prep when you upgraded to the big stand mixer....
• Or how you tried out a new flour and aren't really convinced it was better than your old standard
• Or how you experimented until you found the perfect gluten-free version of your go-to chocolate chip recipe (for those readers who had asked... even if they asked on a different blog you read)
• Year-end wrap up of your favorite recipe, your favorite tool, and your favorite tip.
• Time-saving or meal batching tips to make the week go easier.

You can section your articles into "recipes", "reviews", "my favorite tools"—which will have links to the pots, mixing bowls, bakeware, espresso machine, etc. that you are using.

Just set up an affiliate link with Amazon and Target for the everyday things you mention and say you'll drop links at the end to anything you mentioned.

• Silpat vs. parchment paper? Recommend one but link both.
• Interested in a bigger purchase, like a Vitamix? Review it. Get a discount code and an affiliate link from the manufacturer for your readers.
• When you have enough recipes, put together an eBook to also sell.

That really is a perfect site idea. They are consumable things, daily things, and they are things people are constantly upgrading.

Bonus feature: I'm pretty sure can take a tax deduction for everything you get to review but you *need* to ask your accountant about that.

Hello, Gary,

I'm back with a stronger desire to build a profitable website and earn some online money$$.

You may not remember me. I was here in 2015, Luther Wood, but it didn't work because I wasn't following my passion.

This time I have chosen a niche that I've lived with for over 50 years, self-help, positive thinking, etc. I'm a Dale Carnegie graduate and also have been a graduate assistant, helping with the training, so that stuff has become second nature to me.

I am now, 81 years young and still going strong. After 50+ years of the self-improvement LifeStyle, I'm living proof it works and I feel qualified to (coach it). Therefore, my website is self-helpcoach with a .com.

I'm still in my first month and have my site online with three pages recognized by Google. I'm a long way off but I'm further ahead than when I started.

Well, I have to get back to the training videos so I can eventually have a presentable site and it ameratized.

Needless, to say,(then, don't say it, do it.) I am following you:-)

I want to get out of this second-rate lifestyle, again.

Hey Gary,
It was your review on "Blazing Trader" that lead me to Wealthy Affiliates. I haven't tried anything like this before but like most, I always knew or thought there is money to be made online. I just never knew how. I'm excited but father of four, full-time provider to my family and have an interest in wood work so my time is pretty limited. I will give it my best go.
Thanks for leading me here.
Hope to see you around!

Hi, Jason!

Thanks for letting me know how you found us. I'm glad my article helped. As a father of four, I'm sure your days are full.

Building an online business does take time in the beginning, but by leveraging the reach of the internet, you can create a nearly automatic income stream far greater than the time it takes to keep it going.

In the training, you will learn about niches. I think your interest in woodworking would make a great niche and a profitable website.

I'm always available to help you.

You could make more money offering to us marketers great copy articles and emails for our responders. Hi Gary,

I've added several posts and while writing these came up with 5 more ideas as thoughts keep coming into my mind. I also signed up with CJ Affiliate Network (not too many products here to sell for me as far as DIY products) and I also signed up with Amazon as a product affiliate.

Would you mind just checking out this latest post. I am getting comments but would appreciate your insight/review.

Also, my website menus have changed. Something happened with the menu titles. It looks like my article titles were added on a couple of them ?? I lost my Product Reviews Menu Tab and Do It Yourself menu tab. Any thoughts?

You have a great website, very informative and easy to read. Great work.

About the menu, go into the menu settings and see if you can find the original menu tabs. If you don't see them, you may have to create them again.

Hi Gary, thanks for the follow. I've started two novels and a non-fiction book myself, looking at self publishing. But I have no illusions as to being able to support myself on a novelists's income in a world full of 99c EPUBs and MOBIs.
Herman Melville couldn't make money with Moby Dick in his lifetime. But I enjoy writing, and I'd love to be able to put out a few books.
I had a look at your novel on Amazon. You must be very proud of the magnificent reviews you've received! No small feat... I just bought it, but may not have time to read it for a while. I'll review it when I do.

Hi, Simon!

I appreciate your interest in my novel and understand about needing money. I've been there more than once.

Do write your novel. If you have the desire, it is essential to get it done. I'm happy to help you and have a free novel writing course available on my website WritingIsaSuperPower.

I'm still hopeful to earn a respectable income with my novels. The key to self-publishing success is to write several books and cultivate a large readership over time.

Although eBooks are inexpensive, the self-published author earns a higher percentage of the revenue than with a traditional publisher.

Thanks for getting in touch.

Hi Gary,
I have a question for you--probably I'll get to in later lessons, but I'm thinking about it now, and well...you know how that goes. My first website has just been indexed, today. About an hour ago, actually. Now that it has been indexed, what can I do to get my Google rankings up? For example, I typed in "How To Make Creamy Cauliflower Soup", which is the title of one of my posts. It didn't come up on the search page; perhaps it will be found on a page farther along, but I searched through the first 10 pages and didn't find it. I'm sure there is a way to boost my rankings. Thanks for your help.

Hi, Kathy!

Thanks for getting in touch.

When your site is indexed, that is only the beginning. Getting indexed just means the search engines know your site exists. It will take several more weeks for the search engines to get to know your website better, to trust it and to properly rank your content.

The search engines move in mysterious ways and we just have to let them do their thing.

When you go through the training on using Google and Bing webmaster tools, you'll learn how to help things along a bit. At this point, the best thing you can do is create more content. The more content you have the more authority the search engines will give your site and the higher your posts will tend to rank.

You have to beat the search engines silly with content so they know for sure what your website is all about.

There is also something called the Google dance that happens. This is when your post moves up and down in the rankings. It happens. Remember, as you are adding content to your website, a lot of other people are too. The search engines are constantly evaluating what should go where and they don't always get it right.

The one thing you must not do is build backlinks or buy backlinks. In the past, people created backlinks to their websites to boost rankings. This worked for a few years, but then the search engines penalized websites that did this.

I recommend that you focus on creating more content to boost the authority of your website and get comments on your posts through the "Comment" area in SiteRubix.

I hope this helps,
Gary

Hey Gary,

I wasted $670 in their Infinite program. I was prepared to pay $300 every month to AWAI (after the initial $1250) if I had not stumbled on WA again.

Now, I am still trying to justify my AWAI purchase, and rationalizing that their study material is worth it!

Hi, Gautam!

There is some good information in the AWAI materials. It's not all bad.

I took a couple of their courses too. Don't beat yourself up over it. Lesson learned. Move on and focus on the opportunity before you now.

Most people who try to improve their finances usually fall into a few traps along the way. That doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. It does hurt to lose money, particularly when money is in short supply. I've been there.

I know of a woman who spent $3,600 for an AWAI weekend workshop and has never made a dime from it.

And I've met two WA members who lost over $200,000 to business partners.

Do read the AWAI material and learn from it. It will give you a foundation for writing persuasively.

In building your online business it's essential that you demonstrate integrity and trustworthiness. Ad copy methods as taught by AWAI are less productive than being genuine.

Building relationships with the people who visit our website is far more important and profitable than a one-off sale because of something clever we wrote.

I'm sure you will do well with Wealthy Affiliate.

I'm here for you,

Go to SiteRubix Manager and click on your website as if you were logging in, but instead of logging in, click on "details" in the bottom right corner.

When the details page opens, scroll all the way to the bottom and you'll see a "delete this website" button. Delete and start over.

Hi, ShelGas!

It's a pleasure to meet you. Thanks for stopping by to chat.

Writing persuasively in invaluable online. However, much has changed and continues to change with copywriting. Many of the old methods no longer work as well as they once did.

People are becoming blind to ads and headlines. They've learned to ignore sales pitches, not to mention the attention span has shrunk to 8 seconds!

I think the trend in sales in more towards relationship and integrity. While the words we use are still important, it's essential not to be manipulative with our language, but instead to be as helpful and genuine as possible.

I worry that many good writers are ruined when they take copywriting courses because it makes their writing manipulative instead of helpful. This is actually counter-productive.

All the best,
Gary

Hi Gary,

I appreciate your immediate interaction and support. After reading your profile I feel that we are very similar, except that I have not yet published a novel. If you visit my website bearmilleroutdoors , you can see what my passions are, but I have not been able to achieve my dreams and goals to this point. I have been in the IT industry for the past 33 years, but I always wanted to be a writer and focus on my passions, but I have not been able to do that.

A few years ago I created my website, and for a while I had a lot of products on my site, but I ended up being black-listed by Google because I had assisted-opening knives on my site, just like Cabela's, WalMart, and Bass Pro Shops have, but I was not one of those big retailers. It is hard enough to compete with those guys and Amazon, so I took all of my products off my site and just focused on writing, which has tended to dwindle since that bad experience three years ago.

Sorry for the novel, but I am reaching out to you because you seemed so supportive to me within the first few hours that I joined this site. I need advice on how to proceed. I feel like I have done so much of what AW teaches, but there are some specific areas where I need help, and I don't know if I should sign up for the monthly membership when I feel that I have so much already in place. It doesn't help that I have recently left my job and I am currently unemployed, so taking on another monthly bill is not something I am sure I want to do.

I don't know, you just seemed helpful and encouraging, so I thought I would start this conversation with you. If this is not something you want to engage in, please don't hesitate to tell me so, you won't hurt my feelings in any way.

Thanks,
Bear

Hi, Bear!

I just saw your message. I’m on the east coast, South Carolina, and starting my day. It’s a pleasure to help you. You have a terrific website and are far ahead of the learning curve.

I’m sorry to hear you got slapped by Google. They can be a fickle bunch. I’m sure Wealthy Affiliate can help you make your website profitable.

I can relate to your frustrations in pursuing your passions. Life gets in the way. It took me a long time to arrange my life so I could write novels. Incidentally, when you’re ready to write your novel, I’d be happy to help you there as well.

Since you recently left your job, I think we need to get your website profitable as soon as possible.
My experience with recovering a site that was hit by Google is limited, but we have some members here who can help you. You can post your questions on their profile like you did here.

However, I think it will be more productive if you approach these members with a private message.
At the free starter membership level, you do not have private messaging. You will have to upgrade for that, but your first 30 days is only $19.

That will give you 30 days to dig in and see how we can help you. You can get a lot done in a month.

Meanwhile, go through the training to be sure you have all the fundamentals and click the boxes at the bottom of each lesson so you can track your progress.

Here are the people I suggest you contact:

Steve at: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/ivetriedthat
Jay at: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/magistudios

This post by Jay may be helpful too. I’m sure we can help you. You have a beautiful website in a profitable niche. With your outdoor experience and writing skills, I’m sure you will be successful.

Your situation reminds me of the story of the burned ships. Do you know it? It’s about an invading force that came by sea. Once the troops were on land, the commander gave the order to burn the ships. With the ships gone, success was the only option.

Hi Gary,

Thank you so much for getting back to me and sharing your advice. I think I will try the Premium subscription for at least a month.

Also, my idea for a novel is to take everything I have written for my website (3+ years of material), and make it into a book of general outdoor knowledge, skills, and stories. I am not sure how to go about that, but I have everything in one Word file organized by topic, and it is a lot of material. Any advice on that?

I will continue working on the training and seeing how Wealthy Affiliate can help me. I appreciate your time.

Thanks,

Hi, Bear!

Glad to help.

Wow! It seems you've already written your book. There are a couple ways you can go to get it published.

At this point, if you had the money, I recommend you hire a professional editor to help organize and polish your draft. You may have more than one book in all the material you have. Unfortunately, editors are expensive.

Expect to pay at least a couple of thousand dollars for an editor. If that's not in the budget, you might consider self-publishing or contacting agents or publishers.

Taking a step back, based on what you've told me so far, I suggest you focus on making your website profitable for now. That's a big project. Your book is a big project too. If you try to juggle them both at the same time they both will suffer.

So, focus on your website for now. Once that's established, we can look at ways to publish your book. Books, particularly first books, are usually not profitable. It takes years to build up a readership.

That said, when your website is profitable with lots of visitors and you have a large opt-in list, it might be easy to self-publish your book (or books) and market them to your list and through your website.

So, again, it comes back to getting your website profitable first.

I'm here for you,
Gary

Hi Gary,

Thanks for adding me to your network.

I am longing to learn more about copywriting. I love to write, but am already beginning to feel that perhaps my style is a little too wordy for the marketing purposes of affiliate marketing.

I hope not.

It's early days, and I have chosen a blog style website for my first venture, which is to share my new journey of beginning an online business, so perhaps it will work.

I guess the real challenge for a copywriter is to adapt your style to your chosen niche, and to your client. Writing content is such a big part of this business and getting passed resistance the other biggie!

All the best,

Jules

Hi, Jules!

Your writing style is warm and inviting. That and integrity are all you need to be persuasive.

Trust is the rarest commodity on the Internet. If you can convey genuine trust with your writing, you will beat a professional copywriter every time.

When I write copy for a client I must write persuasively about the product whether I believe in it or not. That can get tough. When I write for my own website, I can pick the product and only promote products that I would recommend to my best friend. That make writing copy a lot easier.

Also, people are numb to ad copy now. So the most effective copy is really not sales copy at all. It's copy that reads like a conversation. Your writing style is perfect.

All the best,
Gary

When I can't post, it may seem as if I'm doing nothing. But, that isn't true. I've finished the "Get Started" (Course 1) lessons and will be posting my tasks for the Bootcamp Course 1 before going to bed.

I've been learning from blog posts on WA and doing research off WA as well.

I've also been working on my .siterubix(dot)com site. I'll see if I can figure out how to add the link to it to my profile page.
UPDATE: I just found out adding your website to your Profile is another of those things that doesn't come with the limited free Premium trial.

On Aug 12 (a significant date to me) I'll buy my own domain name, so I've been working on coming up with a suitable name that hasn't been taken yet. I've also gotten a couple thousand words of content drafted for it.

It's been a real struggle, but I've been able to get in at least 10 hours of productive work each day.

I'm chugging right along.

Hope you're doing well and having many successes!

Hi, Sharon!

Thanks for updating me on your progress. I am more than impressed. With your attitude and commitment, it's only a matter of time until you have a profitable online business.

I'm glad you're active in the community and chugging along nicely!

I look forward to August the 12th.

I'm here for you,
Gary

Hi, Tania!

Thanks for getting in touch. I'm an animal lover too. My girlfriend and I run a home for wayward cats and dogs. We just took in three kittens. There's a lot of love here.

Based on my experience and the experience of the authors I know, selling a book online is not an easy way to make money. My novel sells consistently but doesn't pay the rent.

I caution you not to expect to earn a lot of money with a book. Although the more books you write the more sells you will have over time. I earn far more with my websites than with my book.

It's very simple to get a book on Amazon. Go to CreateSpace.com and it will walk you through the process. CreateSpace is owned by Amazon.

Keep me posted and let me know if I can help.

All the best,
Gary
