We all get confused at WA - sometimes.

Many people now are telling me they are lost at Wealthy Affiliate or getting frustrated. I got lost at Wealthy Affiliate. Why is that?

There is a good moral to this story. A very strong teachable moral moment. A way to solve it.

Let tell you my story – I jumped right in at WA – started the training – I immediately tried to build a Website – I had already tried elsewhere – a friend and myself worked on a site for a long time – It looked like crap. He was supposed to know what he was doing and I had no idea. He did not know what he was doing. The site still sits out there hosted next to my new one – that one still needs lots of work.

Now I was excited to get into WA - I just knew it was the answer. I jumped right in – and low and behold another poor looking site – pages or post just did not go where I wanted. There were not visible and certainly not on the home page where I was trying to put them. I just could not figure out WordPress – nor how to move around pages or posts – or what the hell is the difference anyway???? What is a page and what is a post?

I went to college – I am not dumb – but I went to school when you used paper, pens and pencils. A computer was the equivalent of a calculator and a filing system and it took up floors of a building. The words - terms for what we are trying to do now did not exist yet.

Now again - why am I bringing this up.

If you start here at WA and you encounter a word or a function and it does not exist in your vocabulary – you are stuck. If you start in and make a page or post and have NO IDEA which is which or why - you are stuck.

There was a famous book written - Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus.

(By the way I am from Mars – no really – I am – Mars, Pennslyvania – born and raised there - so this author right here is really from Mars – so that makes me a bit of an expert about the book – not WA.)

Actual picture of downtown Mars. PA..

Many of you may have read that book – it was a relationship book and it discussed how women and men are from different worlds – when they say the same word - their brains and thought processes force a different meaning for the same word - much like you are speaking a differently language - a man and women do interpret (think) differently. The interpretation and expected results from a word or sentence or thought is not interpreted the same by a women as a man. It is confusing and frustrating.

You would have to read the book – if you have not – in order to understand the differences. But they are real and each person/sex hears one word and each naturally understands a different meaning -usually 180 degrees from the other. It causes problems until you learn – if you ever do. You must learn the opposite sex’s definition of a word in order to react as they expect - not as you do.

Now the book goes through how you learn to understand. How you learn the other’s language so you can react in the appropriate way. So. the other can understand and accept it. Men vs women language.

And in that - there is part of the moral – with WA - everything is available to learn – if and when you learn the language - and where to find the answers.

The day you start there is excitement and you begin – then all of a sudden many of use encounter a foreign language of techy talk and confusion – many of us go off and look ahead or around - or try to work past a word or words - we have NO IDEA what they mean. People get mad and frustrated and disillusioned but mostly STUCK.

ere STUCK - and most every day I get stuck again – but finally - I am learning how to use the site – find what I need - ask the right questions – KNOW ENOUGH VOCABULARY WORDS TO ASK THE QUESTION USING THE RIGHT WORDS. Not feel stupid for not knowing - or just be too confused to even know what to ask.

Again, why do I bring this up? I did not find a vocabulary video to explain the hundred or so words that are techy in nature and us, non-techy people, have no clue. I looked on line and printed a vocabulary list and studied them. I had to do that before I even began to understand the sentences. And - in my not having a clue/vocabulary – the instructions for the course are in a foreign language to me.

Next, I really looked around and found people who would be patient enough to help – I searched the data and looked for training essays or videos to explain what I did not know. I was too naïve to even know what to ask for a while.

Once again – why do I bring this up? Now that I have a bunch of “follows” those people are talking to me – they express their frustration. They are in the same boat I was in – that I am still in sometimes. I realize - there are two types of people here. Some can write and find niches and have creative ideas that would monetize – but they have no clue about techy stuff – it gets them lost. They get stuck in the first few lessons and may not find their way out to where they get their answers.

By the way a Marion Black has a lot of “simple” – understandable- training with directions on how to use WA - very, very informative. Plus, lots of good training to questions we, non-techy people, will ask. – us - none techy people all get stuck. And, Marion Black presents answers in a way us, non-techy people, can follow along and not get lost. One day a light bulb goes off in our head - we say – “okay I am finally comprehending the vocabulary of Techy and it’s beginning to make sense.” The advantage is - if and when we get some control of techy stuff – we are the creative writers who can write and write and write.

Now - my theory is - many non-techy people get stuck in the very beginning. Many of us never find our way out. So, we need a vocabulary lesson in the beginning and then some simple explanation of how to use WordPress in a way we understand. So many get stuck somewhere upfront and have frustration and problems getting past it. Some never do…maybe many never do.

Now I can’t speak for the techy minded people. I am not sure how to offer them advice. They build nice sites that work - but a lot of their writing gets lost on the rest of us - either too technical and “big” words - or not so interesting to us non-techy types. Maybe the rapid writer tool can help them. I have not looked at – have not needed it.

So, Wealthy Affiliate IS for everyone – but maybe - just maybe – WA should have a pre-start vocabulary video with pictures that explains the techy words and how they are used - also a printable PDF - for us non-techy’s to learn the language before we begin. Then - send us to a Marion Black type training to explain the functions of the dashboard and how to use it. And most importantly - how to use it to get answers we will need every day to keep going.

Wealthy Affiliate was put together by techy people. It’s good for techy people. But non-techy people show up also. WE need a little pre- training – training. We need the Berlitz Language Training for computer techy language - we need a road map video to use the dashboard and all that is available there - we need a more simple explanation to use WordPress the first few times – as most people you lose can’t put a page or post where it is supposed to go nor move it after it gets in the wrong place.

I have talked to people In England - Spain – South Africa – Canada today alone. All because I found my way here. We are exchanging ideas and working on marketing and sales ideas. I am also talking to many people frustrated here at WA. I hope I have been able to guide them to a vocabulary list and some upfront preparation to use WA. That would make it much more user friendly for non-techy’s like me.

This is a great post. A good story, with a n excellent point.
Here are a couple of links to sites that provide some glossary terms:
http://www.thinkingit.com.au/glossary-of-website-terminology
https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/05/web-design-industry-jargon-glossary-and-resources/

You can probably find similar sites with an online search.

Also, if you copy/paste the term into a question right here on Wealthy Affiliate, someone will reply with the meaning/definition.

Good luck!

thank you - I printed out the terms a long time ago - but many have expressed to me they get lost on the beginning if they are brand new to this. I t was more an essay about some front end things that could help the newbie. I get confused or lost daily as I push to get sites up - running and going towards monetizing.

That perfectly describes me! Very little tech background - certainly not in 'computerese'. The only thing that got me as far as I am is taking those training videos to full screen, and then stopping every few seconds to take notes and attempt some understanding. I think you could do that ebook, or training, or vocabulary list! Best wishes for your success!

I added a second monitor to watch on one - work on the other - i's been better progress since I did that. One screen is too little for a split screen with my Old Eyes. It might help. And I now have my 15 your old step son here helping. You can use that idea - at least not this kids here. I can't make trainging until after 3 months.

Dave,
this is an awesome example of myself as well. I started my journey here with WA last March, less than 3 months ago. Having ZERO experience with website stuff, and very little computer experience. To top that off I am not much of a typist. 3 fingers at best, which creates it own challenge. If you've ever seen my responses in WA you would see how bad the spelling is. Not because I can't spell, but because 90% of the time I'm on my smart phone. The same phone that replaced my old company flip phone only two years ago, lol!

So I, like others here I'm sure, share your frustration. It will take some of us a LOT LONGER to build our sites. However, for me there is no turning back now. I just hope other can forge their way through like we are doing. The help you mention for us non-techy types would be awesome, to say the least. Especially in the beginning.

Thank you so much for posting. By the way I'm writing this on a desk top. It only took a few minutes or so - Lol!!!

Thank you! I'm part of Gen X where a spent most of my childhood analog. In high school we finally got a dial up internet account for the school library. Our home computer was stand alone. I'm somewhat techie in some areas, but Wordpress broke my brain. I'm not sure what the heck I'm doing there, and don't know enough to get it where I want it to be. I had only recently started learning HTML but had to stop due to the number of commitments I had going on at the time. Some tutorials for the more analog generations would be very helpful along with the vocab list.

I am so glad others have the same problems - here is a plug in to WordPress - I pad for Divi but this is free and could help you al ot with wordpress - A WA training video also Keep at it - I am slowing learning and conversing int techy-ease.

I can relate as well. I'm a software implementation and support person in my full-time job, so I'm fairly technically savvy in certain areas. But Wordpress is totally new to me and I remember when I was first starting to build my website, I was totally lost and had to ask for help so many times. Some people would offer suggestions - but in a language that I didn't understand! I agree - a vocab list would be helpful!

thank you for the confirmation I am not nuts - no actually I am nuts but not wrong here

I can relate. I am a newbie and not familiar with the techy language. It is difficult at times to understand and I do rerun the training videos sometimes two and three times over to get as much information branded in my brain.
I love your reference to Mars vs. Venus. I did a report in college on the men/women in business from one of their books. It is a great reminder to keep in mind when creating a site that will target a specific audience.
Oh and I still use pen and paper quite a bit of the time!
Thanks for sharing!

thank you for the comment - her is a training from WA that could help you with WordPress - I am now using Divi that I had to pay for - this one is free with training. It is a plug in I think. Dave

I think the WA training could be improved by having more info about planning and setting up a business up front. And postponing the website building portion further into the training.

The way it is structured now leads to people building websites before they are ready. I know because I am one of them. I have several websites sitting idle because I did not develop the site concept thoroughly (which also means I did not do enough research first).

they believe in building natural traffic slowly - several of us are working on a major way to generate a huge targeted email list - I am working on as we speak - bookmark me and send me a message once a week and I will share it with you after we get it done. It is several wa'ers working in it.

I like the natural way to get (organic) traffic. But sometimes you have to go out and get it.

such an appropriate image - way to many years of playing rugby - no patience.

Great article Dave. I know WA can be a bit confusing in the beginning, but I have learned early on to just do these 4 things when I get stuck:

1. First Search for help (next to the Airplane button:)). If you cannot find an answer do 1 or both of the following:

2. Ask a question in Live Chat and/or

3. Ask a question by clicking the Pen button (next to your rank button) and ask your question.

4. Google it:) (Last solution).

Here are some great training by some WA members: I hope this is helpful:)

Rika

Computers were a big mystery when I was growing up. I had computer phobia for a long time. I had asked other people/programs for help in designing a web site. The results were always less than sterling. It is a steep learning curve with every new endeavor, but this undertaking is well worth the effort.

yes - but a little direction to use non-techy people to begin would have saved weeks and weeks -several of us dropped out because we were lost. I stuck around but a lot don't get there beginning stuff they need to even go forward - in my opinion.

I am a techy type have built websites from scratch that are still out there and which I hope to pull in when I have enough marketing know how.
I am more used to building sites that uses CSS to form a Header, Home Page, and sometimes 2 other or one other block for menus or searches.
You read about the website and use menus to visit other areas.

I don't think we need much Wordpress know how because WA have provided a dashboard.
I struggle with the fact that a blog page is the home page.

I am just getting into keywords and I guess the next step will be writing where I think will be my problem area.

WA however is the place to learn because of the community within.
I suppose as a summary to what U have written I have an opposite view to yours
I just need time..........

well you were a techy type to begin with if you put these two requirements to get into the actual site - you would save a lot of people who don't speak the language in any way. There are many of us. .

I was a coach and if you read One Minute Manager you will see the different ways you have to teach depending upon the beginning knowledge. If people tell you opening they are stuck but still want to learn and they are a paying you to teach them - and the obvious help in many cases are the 2 links above - maybe make those links a condition of getting into the site - for you techy people - who know the stuff already - you can blast through it -. for us that its a foreign language and we are not used to learning from a website - it's required reading to even to begin to have success....in my opinion - and I am in the middle of it and am just finding this.
