Pinterest Tips
The following are some tips from a USA Today article by Steve Strauss on 10-12-2014.
Pinterest is becoming a much better business tool. In some ways i think possibly better than other social media. The visual engagement is really a good hook. I think.
For the uninitiated, Pinterest is a site that offers users vision board-like pages where they can pin and share images. "Pinners" create boards based on themes and post them (i.e., "pinning") with pictures, videos, etc You can follow a person, a topic, a brand, a product, a business, whatever. As a result, the boards are not only cool to look at, but hey also have followers, discussions and so on.
Joel Meek, who is in charge of everything small business at Pinterest has said their mission is "To help people discover things they love and inspire them to go do those things in real life." While Google, for instance, can cough up a ton of facts, it really doesn't help you answer a questions like "Where should I travel to next?" or "What should I make for dinner?".
Pinterest is really interested in two things – discovery and action. There are people on Pinterest, right now, searching, discovering and wanting to take action based on what it is they discover. To date, there are 30 billion pins broken into 750 million boards, and 75% of Pinterest users search and discover boards on the site using mobile.
That is exactly the opportunity that awaits the savvy small businessperson who sees the opportunity that is Pinterest. What makes Pinterest unique in the social media world is that people tend to use it in an active way – instead of just reading a post or watching a video, they use the site to seek out actions they can take. Well, if the action that they can take is to buy your product or visit your site, all the better, right?
Joel gave four tips onhow a small business could get started with Pinterest,:
1. Create an engaging page: Set up a profile with boards and pins that really represents your business, your brand and your brand's personality. Then, begin to Pin content from your site, other sites and from other Pinterest boards. Your pins will get discovered not only by those who follow you, but also across the search universe by people searching for keywords that match your pin descriptions.
Joel noted that the best Pins have high-quality images, are positive and helpful, and have actionable descriptions that tell a story.
2. Make it easy for people to pin your content: Add the "Pin it" button to your site or app so that it is easy for people to share your content. Additionally, when people visit your site and want to save a product, they can click that button and save it back to Pinterest.
3. Consider using "promoted pins": Much like Facebook offers promoted (paid for) posts, so, too, can you promote a pin. Promoted pins are affordable and definitely get seen by a lot of pinners.
4. Crunch the numbers: Using the Pinterest analytics tool, you can see which pins engaged people the most, what people like to save from your site, who your audience is and so on.
Pinterest is making an effeort to be more business friendly. We should take advantage of it.
