Facebook Experience

Just wanted to share this with whoever may need to see it as I do think it is important to understand just how much Facebook can be a waste of time.

Over the past 15 years I have owned two businesses, the first of which was a bed and breakfast and the current one which is gourmet retail stores. I have been pretty diligent over the years about posting on social media for both businesses as I have always thought it was "the thing to do". Needless to say, I am becoming less and less impressed by the results there.

In my previous business I did not have all that many followers on Facebook and very infrequently would get someone seeing my ad on there. With my current business, the only way I am getting any traffic at all seeing my posts seem to be when I boost a promotion. Even then, the response is not all that great.

So my advice, is to "stay away from the light Carol Anne"! Your time can be better spent elsewhere. I hope this is helpful to anyone who sees it.

Perhaps you may want to consider a different strategy on Facebook. Like anything else, you get the best results by participating. For me FB is a wonderfully powerful tool, but I do spend a lot of time helping, answering questions, sharing useful posts, liking other posts, etc. I work hard to raise my profile in each group I am in. Then, when I post something, especially something I would like a response to, I have earned the right to ask for attention and subsequently I achieve my desired goal. There's definitely a strategy to it, but it takes time and effort to garner results. Don't give up yet!

I have had mix results and for me it's just a way to keep my name out there.

It is not a surprise, I am skeptical about social media

Disappointing, but not surprising.
I do have Facebook pages but have done little with them until recently. Facebook encourages it's members, but mainly in the direction of spending.

But, perhaps some niches do better than others. For instance, I have a Christmas site and a miniature schnauzer site and both of these I have recently given more attention to on Facebook. Whereas, I do not expect my affiliate marketing site to attract attention on Facebook even though it has a page.

Boy this is kind of a letdown for me. I'm working on my first website and I was going to try Facebook because I had never done it before. I even bought a how to book at books a million. I don't even have a Facebook account because of all the drama. Thanks for the insight.

I hear you! To be honest I have over 13,000 followers between my two store's Facebook pages but I feel as though that means absolutely nothing these days. Unless a follower engages on your facebook pages and posts on a daily basis, the likelihood of them seeing your ads of posts are very slim. I do still ocassionally pay for boosts on FB for my current businesses but find that it really does not bring much of any business to me.

I agree completely!

Yes, I ran some promos on FB as well with poor results even though I selected wide markets etc.

But...there is hope yet. We will crack the code together as a community through innovative methods.

Thanks for sharing this experience. Jay

One thing I forgot to add....

I actually "tested" this by running ridiculous promotions like BOGO promos only on Facebook (both as a regular post and a boosted post). The regular post had ZERO responses and the boosted resulted in just a few sales. Yup, I paid for customers to come in to my store and get one freebie in a buy-one-get-one offer. Grrrr
