Rusty hinge

I’ve just had coffee and cakes with loved one at Wells Cathedral. Their vegan almond tarts are out of this world, mmm!

The Loft Café is up the stairs and a few steps in front of us was an old duck struggling to get to the top. (I use the term old duck in the nicest and politest sense). With her walking stick in one hand, and a hand bag in the other, she really wasn’t doing very well.

Patience was called for and on a hot day like today, patience was about all I could offer.

Not so the young chap immediately behind her.

“There is a lift for old people like you” he said. “That will leave the stairs clear for everybody else”

“Young man, I’ll have you know that I’ve just had a hip operation and part of my recovery is to walk everywhere and not to use lifts – doctor’s orders. So I would suggest that you keep your mouth shut and put your energy into learning how to be sympathetic”

That told him, I thought. She turned to me and said, “My hip is like a rusty hinge. If I keep using it then it will keep moving, even if it does squeak and hurt sometimes. But if I stop exercising it then it will just seize up altogether”

And that perfectly summed up a good few things that I have let slip on my website recently. Not being too good some days (this damned cancer thing) I’ve been promising myself I will catch up, and now that I want to catch up, I’ve forgotten either what I want to catch up on, or forgotten how to do it. I’ve gone rusty and seized up.

So we have a new expression folks.

RUSTY HINGE SYNDROME

Just make sure it doesn’t happen to you. Keep all your skills honed and up to date, it’s hard to catch up some days – but we must do it.

Wishing you all a glorious rust free Summer (or Winter for our antipodean cousins).

Stay lucky

I am now on the lookout for any way that I can avoid the "Rusty Hinge Syndrome".

Thanks, Bux!

Tim 🎼

It crept up on me and now needs more effort.

Indeed, the "rusty hinge syndrome" is always looming - we should all take avoidance tactics! Cheers, Jenni.

Thanks Jenni, yes, attention to this is essential.
Hope you are well
Bux

Haha Bux! Good one!

Jeff

Thanks Jeff. It served as a good analogy.
Take care buddy.
Bux

It sure did, Bux! Well done!

Jeff

Nice post. I must admit that I am a little rusty in a lot of areas.
Jim

Yes Jim. and some of that rust is difficult to dislodge at times, but we must.
Shiny hinges my friend.
Bux

Sounds delicious, Bux!

Myra ♥️

One of my favorite cakes Myra. I eat it slowly so that I can savor each mouthful.
Look after yourself.

What an apt metaphor! Rusty hinge. When a hinge goes rusty, it turns only with a squeak and some amount of difficulty. So is our art. When we allow a long lull, we become rusty

Exactly Dada, and I let too much rust build up in some areas. Now the hard work begins.
Keep well.
Bux

Can I have some tarts lol?

Thanks for encouraging readers to keep their skills current to avoid "seizing up."

Hopefully, "Rust Free."

Thank you Abie, and of course, there will always be a tart saved for you.
Bux

Thank you so much, Bux! I appreciate you :)

It goes both ways Abie. 🌹
