Just one job

Have you ever wondered just what the heck happened, when someone had just one job to do, just one, a task thast will only take five minutes and thousands of people do it every day – and for some reason, this person fails.

How often do you yourself fall at the first easy hurdle, and we’ve all had bad hurdle days.

I’ve known painters paint the doors green when they should have been blue. I’ve seen carpenter’s fasten doors upside down and electricians wire a plug the wrong way round, but let's just stick with names. Here’s the story …

STEP 1

I’m thinking about my dad, a new father going to register the birth of his first born – me.

It was tradition in my family that the first-born son had two given names. Let’s just say name A and name B.

Name A would always be your father’s given name and name B would be the name by which you were known. So your birth certificate would say A and B, but you were known as B and A

So, my father was registered as Frederick Ronald, but he was always known as Ronald Frederick.

His father, my grandfather, was registered as William Frederick, but called Frederick William.

My great grandfather was Charles William but answered to William Charles

And so on for many previous generations.

Don’t ask, I don’t know why. I’ve asked and never found out why they did it this way.

Anyway, my dear old dad was dispatched off to the register office to get me certified. (I need certifying). He arrived, having repeated my name endless times on the way. Ronald David, Ronald David, Ronald David. Eventually his turn came to sit in front of the registrar.

And what will you call the child … David Ronald. And the certificate was duly endorsed.

This new proud father rushed back to the hospital and showed my mother and grandmother the birth certificate, I was officially a person.

Agggghhhh. What have you done …..

Too late, my name was the right way round, I was a David Ronald, which is the wrong way according to family tradition.

STEP 2

Then you can have two spellings with the same pronunciation …

Derek or Deryk - Stephen or Steven - Claire or Clair and so on

STEP 3

This one’s a mess.

I was teaching a class of electrician’s and went through the usual start of course form filling on the first day, - name, date of birth, address etc.

Checking the forms, one chap had obviously made a mistake with his name. How do you pronounce your name I asked. He told me – Stuart

And how do you spell it. STAURT he replied. What! I’ve never seen that before.

It’s a long story and here it is.

Born in the local hospital, his mother and father agreed to call him Stuart, as per normal spelling.

Off he goes to the registrar’s offices and on the way meets a friend. Come and have a whisky to bless the baby’s head he says, just one quick one.

There is no such thing as a quick one when it comes to alcohol. Two hours later he emerges from the pub and staggers up the road to register the birth.

The registrar asks him how he is spelling the babies name as it can be spelt Stuart or Stewart.

In a drunken stupor, he announces S T A U R T, and that was it. Job done!

Stuart, sorry, Staurt, and the rest of his family went through his whole life not knowing about the spelling mistake until he needed a passport for a school trip and the error was discovered, too late.

Rather than be ridiculed at school, his class mates thought it was a cool way to spell his name, so he continued to use the name Staurt for ever more. Luckily for him it all worked out ok, but there must be lots of occasions when a simple error like this can be disastrous. I wonder who else has a spelling tale to tell.

And the moral of all this, and I remind myself often …

Get your facts right – it will matter one day.

And I’ve noticed a big growth in bad spelling on websites and blogs over the last few years. One bad spelling, hmm ok. Two bad spellings in the same article and I’m already losing interest. If I’m going to spend money, I want to spend it with the website that has the better grammar and spelling, wouldn’t you, so if you want to keep your readers attention, get it right.

Happy spelling

Yes, yes, you are so right. We make the simplest mistakes and they turn into nightmares later...or just get accepted as correct when they aren't. And, as for spelling, I see so much of it...and what it does to me is to cause me to focus on the spelling error and miss the message entirely. Too bad we are still illiterate in so many ways.

All we can do is to try to correct our own errors. We can't do much about those that others make.

You are right Fran. I do make mistakes myself, but the thing is, I try to get them right. A percentage of the population just don't know, or don't care.
Keep well
Bux

Haha, Bux! Well now you’ve explained to me why my dad experienced the same thing with his two names. Who knew! Some traditions die hard. Paying attention to details definitely does matter. I hope you are keeping well.

Susan

Hi Susan.
Family traditions are very confusing at times. My son has reverted back to it with the grandson.
Yes, I'm doing well and looking forward to the warmth of Spring bringing all the plants into flower in a week or two.
Keep well.
Bux

Hi Bux...that's nice that your son is holding with tradition. Spring will soon be here and won't it be nice to enjoy all the beauty of the new season! Take care :-)

Great post Bux, spelling and grammar certainly matter to me (I teach it after all)!!

But... we all make the occasional mistake that slips through the cracks no matter how much we go back and check things!!

If there are more than a couple of mistakes though, I do tend to seek advice elsewhere!!

I hope all is well with you my friend and your week has got off to a charging start!!

👍🦏

We would be in a mess if you got it wrong, Nick.
Yes, the odd one sneaks through, most of my followers are bloody eagle-eyed, I just own up to it and we get on with it.
The week is going well. Wounds almost healed, steak is visible in the distance.

Oh I still make some howlers Bux!!

Just get on with it is the way to go, none of us are perfect after all!!

Great to hear that my friend, it better be a good one for your first steak back!!

👍🥩

Very true, none of us are prefect, but we should make an effort to get it right.
Yes, I've been window shopping at the butcher's this morning.
Catch you soon.
Bux

Take care and catch you soon buddy!!

Howzit Bux, did you mean to spell the 2nd last "spelling" incorrect to catch us out?
Cheers
Murray

Hey Murray! Hows it going? The second to last "spelling" looks ok to me... maybe someone updated it???

I was going to point out the "thast" in the first paragraph personally!!

Take care buddy! :-)

Thanks for reading Murray. Now everyone is looking for spalling mustakes.
Bux

Murray

You must be using a Martian spell checker. Thast the fourth time I've checked it and cannot see a problem.
I know, you're playing games.
Cheeky cheeky.

I though you wood like that's.
Murray

Good one Murray. I've had the spung chuckler checking the spelling.

He won't notice.

Oh yes, haven't we all Nick. And most are not very complimentary in my case. A nice Spring day in Somerset today.
Bux

Someone even called me Jeff here not so long ago!!!

Spring can't be far away now Bux, we have a lot of blossom on the trees here, although we did get some snow last Sunday!

A nice day here as well, but we are approaching freezing as I type this!

Time for bed for me...

Catch you soon buddy!

And me Nick. 10 minutes read and then lights out. A busy day.

Haha, Love it, Bux!

Jeff

It was a talking point in the group, all in good spirit.
Talking of spirits, how are you and how is the guzzle table.
I'm ready for pole position tonight.
Bux

I have some spirits, but the Guzzle table has not been occupied today yet, Bux!

Cheers! Wait for the post, my friend!

Jeff😎🍺

Not occupied YET. there is hope Jeff.

Not likely today, Bux, but that is alright. I have still enjoyed my spirits!

Jeff

I just fancy a nice glass of mead, but I don't have any.
I'll just settle for keeping an eye out for your post.

Look out for it in an minute or two, Bux!

Jeff

Watching.

Posted right now!

Indeed, spelling is so important, Bux. I particularly hate "your" instead of "you're". Then there's "acomodate", "calender" and "receive". And even more mistakes that people make. Cheers, Jenni.

The list is endless Jenni. Enough to create a whole standalone website.
I trust you are in good health.
Bux

Indeed, I am, apart from a head cold. I've been away from WA for a bit because I had three shows running with my community theatre activities. Now down to one, I thought I'd check in to see what's been happening.
