Probably a stupid question, but I was wondering how people can make affiliate websites going against everything we are taught here (keywords, length) and make a lot of money an
They could be using paid traffic or social marketing etc. I doubt it would be SEO getting them those results. Although I have seen top spot for a keyword being just amazon products (affiliate links and NO text at all) by using the authority of Flipboard to rank for the term.
However it may be just a matter of time before Google slaps this Flipboard and Amazon terminates their account. Why?
Because if someone is searching for a group of products they are looking for information like the best red shoes for quicker walking, not just affiliate links. They want to know why are those red shoes better than then rest? etc.
I have seen an amazon affiliates account terminated because his whole site was set up like a store which offered no value to the reader. It was posted on the amazon affiliate forum if interested in looking. (Recommended reading there for all amazon affiliates)
Amazon wants people sites to offer more of an experience, offer more than just a listing which is already present on amazon so the reader is getting more value than if they were to head straight to amazon.com
This is probably not the case with all affiliate programs, but I can only speak of amazon. So I would recommend adding a few lines of text saying why this product is a good gift idea for...... for each product.
That's my opinion on store affiliate sites anyways.
Thank you for your input Josh! Definitely would add a paragraph of why, just not a 500+ words per product. It would be an alongside feature with my blog, where I will continue to write my 500+ word posts. If anything, it would be an experiment. :)

Look before coming to wa I tried the affiliate marketing way, and posting just links on social media sites. Never got any where with it. At least here writing about something, then posting a product to do with the content I at least have engagement with people. In my opinion, and better way to to do business.
Hi John, thanks for your input! It is in no way a dominant feature on my site, rather just a sideways experiment.
