Australia's National Day - so much to celebrate, so much reconcilation left to be done
Yesterday marked the official National Day of Australia that in recent years has been the topic of much discussion and heated debate.
The day marks the arrival of the First Fleet of British convicts in Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788.
The date was first celebrated as Foundation Day in the early 1800s, but not uniformly across the colonies. It wasn't until 1994 that all states and territories recognized this day as a national holiday after decades of debate.
Australia day is a wonderful day to reflect on our nation's history, uniqueness, achievements, conflicts and challenges. The day is also marred by our Indigenous Australians as they see this day as a day of invasion and dispossession.
There is no way to right the wrongs of history. This country, like others, is marred by substantial mistreatment of communities, groups and individuals. There is only one direction and that is forward, together as brothers in arms.
For Australian's, this day is and should be celebrated, but for the right reasons. For our responsibility lies in full reconciliation, full accountability, and full participation in helping every Australian thrive. Together, we can right the wrongs by how we treat one another.
Walking as one, arm in arm to make this nation a wonderful place for all. Now let's eat some Vegemite!
Have a wonderful day everyone

Every country needs its national day (like thanksgiving in the US).
Australia Day is the day all of our people, no matter where they came from, to celebrate this great country and move forward as one nation.
With respect to our First Nation countrymen, it just shouldn't be on 26 January.
Thanks Phil, so true. It's quite simple, YES celebrate, but another day is needed for all Australian's
