It Happened One Beautiful Spring, Back in the Day.

Sit Back and Relax, and I'll Tell You the Story of How I Came into Possession of James Bond's Car...

I had just Gotten Back to My Home State of Illinois from Pennsylvania, Where, While Visiting With My Older Brother, Roger, He Had Generously Gifted Me with a 1965 Sunbeam Alpine Convertible for My 16th Birthday!

Having Purchased the 2-Door Roadster in West Bromwich, England, During one of His Many Excursions Abroad, Roger had Explained to Me that He was Buying a New Car, and the Dealer would "Only" Allow Him $2,500.00 Trade-In for the British Rootes Group's Car, First Produced in 1953.

This was the Automobile that Competed, as a Modified "Tiger" Model in the 1964 LeMans and Various European Road Rallies, and Captured 4 Coupes Des Alpes Back in 1953.

It was the American Hot Rod Association's National Record Holder in the Quarter Mile, Reaching a Speed of 108 Miles Per Hour in Under 13 Seconds.

In Early Tests on the Car, Analysts Described it as Having "Performance Equivalent to an XX-K Jaguar."

Two of the Cars Raced at Monte Carlo in 1965, Placing 4th and 11th.

"Would You Believe" a 1965 Model was Driven by Maxwell Smart in the 1965-1970 Spy Spoof Series, "Get Smart?"

This Car is On Display at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles, and was Loaned to 1965 Playmate of the Year, Jo Collins for One Year.

The Car was also Featured in the 2008 Film Adaptation of the Get Smart TV Series.

A Lake Blue Alpine, the Same Color as the One I Drove, was Driven by Sean Connery, The Best James Bond, in the 1962 Ian Fleming Flick, Dr. No, the Very First James Bond Movie.

Connery's Alpine had Matching Interior. Mine was Baby Blue.

It Goes Without Saying that, at 16, I was Thrilled To Pieces to be Given That Particular Car as a Gift from My Wonderful, Big-Hearted Big Brother!

I had an Absolute Blast Driving it Back Home on My "Road Trip" From Pennsylvania to Illinois, Top Down and Radio Blaring All the Way!

When I Arrived Home, My First Order of Business Happened to be Delivering a Kitten From One Friend to Another.

I Picked Up the Kitten from My First Friend, Who Supplied Me with a Box and a Blanket, and I Headed Out to My Second Friend's House, Top Still Down on My New Sports Convertible.

I was Following (There's That Word!) a Large Pick-Up Truck, When All of a Sudden My Kitten Companion Made an Astounding Leap From Her Box in the Passenger's Seat to the Ledge of the Passenger's Window!

I Gasped, and Reached Over to Grab My Feline Daredevil, and, At That Exact Moment, the Pick-Up Truck I was Following Swerved Left Around a Parked Chrysler Imperial, and As I Retrieved the Kitten, I Rammed Headlong into the Back of the Huge Parked Car.

After Sitting There for a Few Seconds, I Opened My Door and Got Out, Not Realizing Blood Was Flowing Freely From My Nose, Which, I Would Later Learn at the Hospital, was Broken in Several Places!

My New Sports Car, James Bond's Car, Received $550.00 in Damages. Not a Scratch on the Boat-Sized Imperial.

All that Spring, I Played on the Golf Team With a Bandaged Nose. All the Yearbook Sports Photos Show Me With Large Sunglasses, Almost, but Not Quite Covering the White Bandages.

I Learned a Hard Lesson About Loose Animals in Vehicles.

My Car was Repaired in About Two Weeks, With Money I Earned Working at the University Golf Course.

My Dad Thought it was Best I Pay For the Repairs Myself, and I'm Certain He Was Right.

I Enjoyed My Car All that Summer, and for Many Years to Come.

My Brother Died of Cancer at 56, After an Action-Packed Life, but I'll Never Forget the Loving Generosity He Showed His Kid Brother on His 16th Birthday!

I Never Drove With a Loose Animal in the Car Again.

Well, a Turtle One Time, but, That's a Story for Another Time.

(The Kitten was Delivered Unharmed!)

I am glad you mentioned the kitten was ok. Our story is of my partner's cat Pixie. When Peter moved up to northern New South Wales he left Pixie with his brother until he got settled. Finally it was time for Pixie to travel north. His brother obtained a pet travelling box from the airlines. About 5 km after starting out Pixie had destroyed the box and was being very resentful about being in a moving car. So back home he went before he was shredded too.

Now just imagine if Pixie had been in that carrier and on a plane being flown north. She would have probably taken over the cockpit.

I loved Bond's first car. I couldn't afford one but I did have an old TR3 and I know just how you felt with the wind in your hair.

Thanks for sharing that story, Helen. Those Triumphs were cool, too. I also had a MGB once. Wish I'd kept it, too. I could be like Jay Leno, with a garage full of cars. I don't have a garage, though. :)

If you could afford to have all those lovely old cars you like you could probably afford a large shed to house them in. I can't remember the exact story or place it happened, but some years ago a woman lost her husband. In the clean up after his death an old vegetation covered shed was uncovered. And inside that shed was dozens of old cars worth a fortune. Some people have great finds. Too bad for the reason behind hers but I vaguely remember her husband had lived a happy, full life.

Back in the day, things didn't seem so expensive, and when your Brother gifts it to you, that's even better! :)

What a fab story

Thank you, Pauline! :)

Love Sean Connery as James Bond and West Bromwich is just up the road from me!! :)

Wow! Ever meet an American bloke named Roger? He spent every summer in England, and touring Europe for 10 or 12 years! :)

No, lol :)

So cool, James and his Aston Martin. And Mr Connery a witty and cute 007. I love hearing the Bond theme.
Glad you only broke your nose that day. Did you learn about seat belts too?

I don't think there were seat belts then. I wear them now! :)

Oh right, seat belts were introduced early seventies.Good you´re using them now!

Wonderful piece of writing again... Yes, cats can be that dangerous..I believe big sunglasses could have looked cool on you..in combination with the sports car.. when you are 16... Wow! You can really write memoirs :)

Thanks, Vera. One of the cars I wish I'd kept! :)

But you keep it- in your memory. That's the safest place...:)

Misty watercolor memories...of the way we were... :)

Very beautiful.. you can go pointillism.. Love this style.:)

Thanks. :)

I really think you are a kind of impressionist in life...and it's wonderful...))

Thank you, My Dear! :)

:))

Great story thanks Rick I bet you are still playing with kittens

No pets currently, Tim.

And it was all to save that cute little kitty!! I guess you could say you were "Rick Bond", The Spy Who Loved Kitties!!!

The name's Bond...Rick Bond. (You can be Moneypenny) :)

Awesome story. You should write a book!
What's your affiliate rate? Lol!

I'd write one if it would give me some affiliates. Oh, heck, I'd probably write one anyway! :)

Oh, Rick I keep telling you, you must write a book!

It's amazing how events always seem to head for one particular moment in time, and collide in it.

These are the moments when miracles happen.......

I guess it was a miracle I lived through it. Never saw it coming! :)

Shaken..........not stirred right Rick !

Good one, Steve. Probably a little of both. You find out if your girl really loves you, if she can still kiss you with your face covered in bandages like the Mummy! :)

I am sure she considered you handsome full face bandages or not!

I may have looked better with the bandages! :)

I often feel the same way brother !
