Newspaper/Magazine Columns
Writing a periodic column is a great marketing strategy.
A column, like a book, is powerful positioning tool.
When your name and photo appear week after week, you build your reputation as an expert within your niche.
When it comes to buying, your name will be foremost on your customers mind.
You will also be perceived as superior to your competitors, as you're the person who writes that column.
A news or informational column are not perceived as an ad, and therefore, turns off the mental ad filter.
It can be tough getting a newspaper or magazine to agree to run your column, as publishers hate handing out free ink, so to speak, if it is a blatant attempt to plug your business.
Therefore, ensure that you produce honest and content rich columns, that provide solid information that your readers can use, or will be entertained by.
If you offer your column for free, you both get something out of the deal.

I really do not even look at any newspapers or magazines. But I am curious about the results from you poll.

I know classified ads in the paper used to be effective. I never used magazine ads but a guy I knew put one in the National Enquirer that said, " Send $5. Now questions asked." He made $800.
Now people don't but a paper as much and you can put free ads in Craigslist. I used to read a lot of magazines. A couple of weeks ago I walked past the magazine rack in a drug store. Magazines were $13 and up. So they probably don't sell nearly as many as in the past.
True, sales are down, but a lot have also been digitalised. I'm also referring to info articles here, rather than ads or selling. We have a local magazine pushed through the door every 4 weeks, and it contains local news, help, advice, and classifieds etc. Volunteering to be a columnist helps them and myself achieve our goals.
