Protect Your Domain Name!

This has been a lesson learnt and should be common sense, but I figured I could trust "family" on my FB account.

To the story behind the title:

I got frustrated about a week ago and posted this as my FB status

With a comment of: "Google. Y U no index me?!"

It was a semi serious post of which I figured would get some comments and discussions from my friends. I was stupidly mistaken. Instead, my wife's step brother decided to "claim" the domain name for me "so that others won't steal it". He is now holding it and won't transfer it back.

So now I have a decision to make. Scrap the site I was building and start again with a different name or go smack him upside the head until he transfers the domain to me. Personally, I'd prefer to get the domain back so I can continue with my site but it doesn't seem to be happening at the moment.

PLEASE let this be a warning to anyone reading this. If you haven't registered your domain and you have jealous (or douchebag) friends / family members, DO NOT share it until you DO have it!

Just my 2 cents.

UPDATE:

After some brainstorming (and calming down), I came up with a much better domain that simply works better!

www.thewirelessdepartment.com

It's perfect! Even down to the email. Everyone always says "Go see Chris at the wireless department" already. It's a simple step up to add a .com to it.

Every cloud I guess :)

Unusual situation. Sometimes trust is close to home!

Absolutely. Just a roadblock for now. It'll either be cleared or I'll build a detour :)

That's a rough lesson to learn. I am sorry for that.
Personally, I would be tempted to smack him upside the head, unless you don't mind changing, or have found a name that you like better.

Seriously though, what is he going to do with it? Is he working online? Does he have plans to develop the site himself? Does he just want to hold it over your head a bit and make you pay him for it?

I think I would make a solid effort to get it back and if it didn't work, I'd let it go and find a new name. Then I would un-friend him and have no further dealings with him whatsoever.

I believe he's trying to hold it over my head. He develops sites for people. I got some advice from a different group I'm in, opened a Namecheap account and have requested him to transfer it (It's free to transfer to another NameCheap account). He knows full well that he has to the the one who transfers it, yet told me to request the transfer.

Oh don't worry. As soon as this is resolved, he'll never see any of my posts again!

Live & learn I guess.

So sorry to hear, go smack him over the head just joking.
I guess you have to start over again.

Yeah it's tempting trust me lol

That's poor form!

Yeah. It'll come back to bite him.

What a despicable thing to do.

Karma is a bitch. It'll catch up to him. I'll just rebuild. It's frustrating but I refuse to allow him to stop me. :)

it's the same everywhere - if you have a good domain name then buy it before showing it to anyone, even in here - see Jay/magistudios often finds a domain name in his webinars and in seconds someone has bought it!

I'm more annoyed that it was taken by a family member. Hard not to trust people that act shady like that. Guess it's how he runs his business. Shame really.
