Is it Autumn Or Fall

I always wonder how people refer to this season, the UK seem to always refer to it as being Autumn.

I always say it is Autumn until it comes time for the clocks going back and then it becomes Fall as I always say that they fall back in the October and they spring forward in the March.

It is the only season in the year that actually has two words for it and the rest of the seasons are therefore just known as spring, summer and winter.

I love Autumn and what happens within it, like the leaves changing colour as there are so many beautiful different colours and there is nothing better than being able to kick the leaves around when they are dry and crisp. You also have Halloween and Guy Fawkes (not sure if this is just a British thing though).

Now this question above sounds inviting to me also, I visited New York at the end of November back in 2012 and although we were prepared for really cold weather as warned by my husband who had already been there at the same time before and it was so cold he had to go and buy a hat and gloves, we were lucky enough to get really nice autumn days that were dry, bright and reasonably warm. Therefore if I were to go again it would be at the same time although I would wait till after Thanksgiving the next time.

Well here we are at Saturday everyone and,

It may be fall where your are but here, in Eastern Idaho, we awoke to several inches of snow this morning. The trees hadn't even had the chance to finish turning colors yet.

Thanks, yes it is.

That must have been a shock to you this morning.

Now following you. xxx

Thanks Cheryl,
It can be fall,
It can be autumn,
As long as the nice crispy leaves keep falling in lovely brown, Orange and yellow colours.
And I get to crunch them!

Definitely Juliet, I totally agree with you. Thanks. xxx

In Chicago it's the Fall.

Thanks Darleen, I was just curious as to what people call it and where they are from as I always took it as being an American word when it's referred to as the fall. xxx

Hi Cheryl - I grew up in New England and we referred to it as Fall. I guess it just depends on where you are from. I live in Texas now and we refer to it as Winter as there is never really a true Fall or Autumn season around these parts. Today it's in the low 90's here.

Thanks Patrick, does that mean you go from summer straight to winter then back to summer lol. I am coming to stay with you then if that is the case. xxx

Thank you Cheryl. I call it Autumn

Hello Glenys,

Thank you, so do I mostly.

Hope you are well. xxx

Thanks for the post, Cheryl. I guess whatever you call it, it's beautiful, but still with a note of sadness.:)

Why the sadness though Vera?

You are very welcome though thanks and glad you liked it. xxx

I like light, and there's a lot of dark and gloom further in the end of October and November.
I try to turn on a lot of light at home and wear bright clothes.
It's all the matter of attitudes of course. But I still like the sun. I really envy Rick this season.lol:))

That is true Vera, I'm the same in that I hate the long dark nights and dark mornings.

I like a bright sunny cold morning rather than a grey wet and miserable morning. I always think that you can wrap up for the cold but if you get wet then there is nothing worse. xxx

Definitely "Autumn" :)

Fall doesn't sound right :P

Thank you Neil and I agree. I often wondered if it got the name Fall because of the leaves falling from the trees.

Now following you as well. xxxx

Or maybe coz they FALL over on wet leaves lol.

I'm following you back :)

Thank you for the follow back Neil and yes you just never know lol. xxxx

No problemo, Cheryl!

It is the colours of Spring in Australia!

Lucky you Carol, you will have summer soon. xxx

Hi Cheryl, I like the word "Autumn" but I call it "Fall" just what others around here call it I guess. I suppose it is somewhat regional. I think Autumn is more of an East Coast word and I am in Alaska which has more West Coast and Midwest influences.

I am not sure what others call it in those regions though. Quite a few of both I suspect. Of course the U.S. is a huge mixing bowl of cultures and backgrounds.

I LOVE the leaves too! Maples are not indigenous here but people plant the as ornamentals and they are gorgeous! We have lots of trees with pretty leaves, birch, quaking aspen, willow, poplar, mountain ash...

Thanks Jessica, I always thought on Fall being more an American thing and wondered if the name came from the fact of the leaves falling from the trees.

It shows you that everywhere and everyone has different names for it. I love the colours when the leaves change and as I said, kicking them when they are dry and crisp but when they get wet and slippy they become dangerous. xxxx

I have a sweetgum tree in my backyard and I swear it has every color of the rainbow in it .Even a very dark purple approximating blue!

That must be amazing to see all the different colours Mike, you must take a picture to let me see. xxx

Nice!

Oh... Can it really be so, Mike? Never heard of such a tree. Need to find a picture.:)))

Is this your own tree Mike, beautiful autumnal colours. xxxx

Yes. One of the most beautiful hardwoods out there!

Oh, that is beautiful. Thanks, Mike:)
