Flicking through Jaxxy for some keywords I came across, Stephen King king of horror. Well it says it all!

Name by nature, and name by position, he must be ranked as the greatest author on the genre 'horror' of all time?

Can anyone come up with a more scary writer than Stephen? If so please point him or her out to me.

I think he is the scariest writer I know so far....hmmm might have to really think more about that one though...

Some would argue Poe, since he was an original, a pioneer of the genre. Of course, later practitioners could benefit from all those who proceeded, but it's hard to question SK's contribution, his prolific output and the number of Americans who can't sleep entirely due to his work.
Short personal recollection: when I was first dating my now-wife, the Shining had just been published. I read it first, then passed it on to her. Several nights later I received a 2am call: come get me! I walked to a gas station to call you, 'cause I can't go into my bathroom — the shower curtain is closed!
Our apartments were far enough apart so that it took me more than 30 minutes to get there, and sure enough, there she was, pajamas and barefoot, 3+ blocks from where she lived and I had to spend the rest of the night with her (after opening the shower curtains)

Are you talking about Pyscho?
Colin

No, no, no.... Shining! Redrum! Drawn shower curtains! Remember?
Tim

Stephen King, All Day Long! His writing style Immerses you! You are "in" the story? witnessing as it unfolds You're in on it!

Dean Koontz writes a scary novel from time to time and uses words I have never heard. I love it! My favorite Stephen King novel is The Tower. I loved the end.

Dean Koontz another brilliant novelist.
Colin

Let's hope he takes the tower up another temporal spiral!

bram stoker...scared the living pants out of me when I watched the my first Dracula years ago..with umm Christopher Lee as the lead actor....scary!!.. but I suppose he is dead now for years...yeah you might be right.. Stephen King..although Dean Koontz writes weird type stories..I like his books.

King is by no means the only horror writer, just he writes the most!
Colin

He built a lot of his thinking on HP Lovecraft as a predecessor. There are Lovecraftian references in some of his novels. Some of it was original though. You can see that Maine lobster influence in the Dark Tower II!

Howard Lovecraft? I think died just before the war?
Colin

I am a massive reader of Stephen King, and although I like the horror side of his work .. I have to say that The Dark Tower Series is a masterpiece.

He is a good writer all round! ....

I am sorry ... I can not name someone better than SK!

Chris

It's hard to find anyone as good!
Colin

Impossible in my opinion :)

He was like the 19th century, Stephen King!

I must track one of his books down. I had forgotten all about him!
Colin

. . .all day long!

Stephen King is the best but try James Herbert too. He is also a great horror writer.

I agree, James Herbert, great writer. A bit behind in output though.
Colin

Poppy Z Bright is pretty good as well but is not so well known.

Colin
