Career/Finance Advice needed
Seeing that we are all entrepreneurs here in WA, I am gathering some information to create a page for my website - timerichworryfree.com - through the question below. You don’t have to disclose anything personal that you are not comfortable with. I only ask for sincere and general comments to build some content on this idea. I don’t have a title yet but when I get it publish, I will let each of you know. The question is;
If you have the chance to turn back the clock, what are your advice or what would you have done differently 10 years ago in terms of career choice and financial planning?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Cathy,
Reading all the discussion lead me to what Steve Jobs has told the student in one of his speeches at the Stanford University, "All our life are full of dots, and when we join those dots together we will realise somehow one way or another, the previous dot has some connection or implication which will lead to where we are now". It is good if we can visualise all our life journey as one dot in our mind, and visualise it in a wider perspective. We will have a wider view of our life. Let us not forget our past dot while we step forward to the next dot.
That is a great question Cathy. Ten years ago, I would have taken a look at what really mattered in life -- the people we care about, our family, our children. I was too focused on things that did not matter, like making my boss happy by working overtime, etc. Now I know those things are not important. I would liked taking more of an interest in learning about the passions of those whom I love. I will give you an example. My father passed away three months ago. His passion was wargaming. He was a famous wargame designer, but I never took an interest in his passion -- I was focused on my own career path and so forth. Now, that he is gone, my niche website is on him -- a legacy to his work. My only problem is I do not know enough about the topic and I am finding it hard to develop a niche website for something that I never took the time to learn about what my father loved doing best. My website is www.acrossadeadlyfield.com and I am struggling with it because I did not take that time I should have ten years ago or 25 years ago.
Now, if you were talking even 25 years ago, I might say that I would have gone into a career that was my passion instead of one that I fell into by default. I would have made wiser spending choices....ie bought less crazy "stuff" and saved more. Having said all that, at any given moment we make choices based on the knowledge that we have. In hindsight, those choices can be good or bad. Yet, in the large scheme of life, we're all where we are meant to be. Every decision/choice we've made ultimately makes us the person we are today and I can live with that. The hard times make you stronger and wiser. The good times are your reward.
Hi Cathy. I am a Master Electrician. Licensed in Texas. Love my work, especially low voltage and control work. I have been working in electrical since the 80's. I am now retired and would have to say 10 years ago I wouldn't have changed my career choice. Looking back I would have to say I should have stayed in college and gotten my degree in business. It would have helped a lot in my career. I would recommend and encourage any young person to stay in school and get as much education as possible. My financial planning went up in smoke along with my job, 401 K, job security, stocks, shares, etc. etc. etc. when my co. shut down the building department I was in and fired 52 men and women, including the CEO and all department heads.. Well as you can see there went my Financial Planning, right out the window along with my Golden Years of Retirement. Sooooo! That is my story and I am sticking to it. Hope this helps. Don't misunderstand. I enjoy my retirement and wouldn't trade it for the world... All The Best...........Frank
Well, ten years ago, I would have opened my eyes and realized what's truly important to myself and spent more time with my family. Especially my daughter since she was still growing up at the time, now she's grown up and moved out. It seemed I was always working at my day job, which I didn't like much at that time either, but felt there was nothing else out there.
If only I knew what I know now, I would've gone out and gotten a computer back then. Ten years ago, I thought I'd never have any use for a computer, lol. It wasn't until one evening in '08, while visiting my parents and brother when a little newspaper ad for a free seminar was pointed out to me. Since it mentioned work from home, well, that got my interest. And, well, to make a long story short, here I am now.
Anyways, those are at least two things I can think of that I'd probably do differently, but then again our past experiences and mistakes are what makes us who we are now.
Best wishes :) -Sherry
Ten years ago Cathy, I was running around like a mad entrepreneur - Making & investing & spending buckets of money.
Borrowing hundreds of thousands of $ at a time like it was ordering pizza. My bank account was rapidly growing, though I had forgotten 'why' I was a stock pilling currency & was now just on the treadmill without a reason.
If I was back there now, I would tell myself to stop / work out what's really important / how much do I really need & how to balance rest & play as I go about my business.

I would have loved to have discovered WA and started this journey sooner, for it has given me a great opportunity to build a good online business
I definitely would have bought less material things, like shoes, bags etc... I would have invested even more in travelling. I would not have sold my apartment at the seaside with a plan to buy another one, in a different place, which I never managed to. With today's knowledge I would have invested differently in the Stockmarket.... But on the whole i am quite happy with the choices I made.
If we were talking 30 years ago, that would have been a different story
You know what is funny? There used to be a time when I would have gladly gone back in time to give myself some advise. However, I have now learned that everything happened to me for a reason and I would not go back and change anything. Sure, sometimes I still daydream about some "what ifs" but in the end I am very happy to be where I am, despite all of my troubles. I see my troubles as lessons in life that I needed to learn to help me have a better life, so in the end I am now thankful for all of the trouble and or mistakes I have made along the way.
