You can use links or widgets, or use the WooCommerce plugin for a store on your site, linking named items in your content to the store.
I actually had one at the beginning. You can basically only choose certain categories or products to put in the a store. Like they said, your better off adding your links or images on your pages and posts.
As Jaweda2k mentioned aStores don,t convert very well and they will not get indexed in search engines.
Banners in sidebars aren't much better with a lot of traffic needed to make steady sales.
Linked pictures and text links inside your page/post content will bring much better results than the two options above.
Kyle had advised me against it for a few reason, but mainly that it does not convert. There were other reason too, but off the cuff I do not remember them.

I want to have a photo gallery on my site where people can share their photos. Is that a plugin or would they email me the photo and then I would place it on my gallery page?
It is best to stay in control of what is uploaded to your site and displayed. The photos that people send need to be controlled by you, whatever method you chose to have them added.
It depends on your WP template. If you chose a Magazine style or Gallery style template, then those features are built in, however I would be doing a plug-in search for an image uploader or a photo gallery program.
I can not help you on the answer, but I sure am interested on the input you get with this question, thanks for asking it, I will lurk. :)
