Understand What Google's Core August 2023 Updates and Implications

Google's August 2023 Core Updates is the second rollout of the year. Most of us know that when Google core updates happen, they are designed to help improve search results and provide users with more relevant and trustworthy information.

But what exactly do these updates entail, and how will they impact your website?

It's important to note that Google constantly evolves its algorithm to serve its users better. The August 2023 Core Updates are the same as many updates before. They aim to identify high-quality content that meets user intent.

Its implications are:

  • All regions and languages are affected by this update.
  • All types of content are targeted, including websites, blogs, and images.
  • Google rewards excellent websites.

You can read more details at the Search Engine Roundtable.

If we all see a drop in our traffic or search rankings after the update, reviewing your content and ensuring it is high-quality and relevant would be necessary. Please follow the Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E.E.A.T) Google Guidelines.

As I've stated in my other blog, websites with slow page load times or poor mobile optimization may impact the user experience.

I learned from Search Engine Land from Barry that it is not something we might need to fix but rather that we should check our Google Analytics for further inspection.

How to Maintain Your Website Visibility in Search Results

We should consider our website visibility in the search results so you can do the following things.

To stay ahead of these updates and maintain your website's visibility in search results:

· Please audit your content: Ensure all pages on your site offer valuable and accurate information that matches user intent.

· Improve E. E.A.T. signals: Establish yourself as an expert in your field by showcasing credentials or featuring guest posts from industry professionals.

· Create fresh content: Regularly add new, helpful content to keep people engaged and give search engines more opportunities to rank your site.

· Use low competition long, long-tailed keywords: Strategically integrate relevant keywords into all pages on your website so that search engines can easily crawl and understand what users are looking for.

· Add Schema markup: Incorporate structured data that will help search engines understand what each page on your website is about.

Suppose we all remain proactive and implement these strategies post-August 2023 Core Updates rollout. In that case, we can maintain our website visibility in search results.

9 Actionable Tips to Stay Ahead

1. Focus on Writing High-Quality Content: Create content that addresses your niche's needs rather than writing for search engines. Make sure to provide insightful content. You can accomplish this by incorporating relevant keywords naturally, using appropriate formatting techniques, and conducting thorough research.

2. Use Quality Images and Videos: Using images and videos will keep people engaged and make finding what they're looking for easier. You'll also get featured snippets if you use multimedia elements.

3. Optimize Your Website for Mobile: According to Google, mobile-friendly websites are a priority, so make sure your website is mobile-friendly. Your site needs to load quickly, is easy to navigate, and all the images and videos are appropriately sized.

4. Natural Link Building Strategies: Adding links from authoritative sites relevant to your niche or industry boosts rankings and increases organic traffic.

5. Improve User Engagement Signals: Engaging users on your website with meaningful interactions can significantly improve search visibility. You can ensure users stay longer by implementing compelling content suggestions, intuitive navigation menus, optimizing call-to-action buttons, and using social sharing.

6. Promote Your Content on Social Media: Promote your posts, engage with users, and build relationships on social media to reach an even wider audience.

7. Monitor Your Progress: Use tools like Google Search Console and Google Analytics to track rankings, keyword positions, organic traffic, and competitive analysis to stay on your game.

8. Stay Up to Date On Google Updates: Follow Search Engine Land or Moz Blogs to stay abreast of Google's algorithm updates.

9. Utilize Structured Data: Using schema markup on your website will help search engines understand what each page is about, resulting in higher rankings and improved visibility in the SERPs.

Following these nine actionable tips, you'll be well-positioned during and after Google's Core August 2023 Update. Keep up with the best practices as search algorithms evolve. All of us ought to be on top of the game every time a new Google update is released.

Final Thoughts

Post Google's August 2023 Core Updates are creating a need for businesses and website owners to be proactive. It is vital to optimize the user experience, create quality content, build links, boost site speed and mobile responsivity, and stay up to date with the best SEO practices to maintain online visibility and drive organic traffic. Hi Jenni, sure you are welcome. Please do read Diane’s comment here. I found it interesting. She expanded more whats it's about which is good to know.

Great post, Brenda, and thank you for sharing some of these tips. So far, I haven't even noticed anything with Google but I will keep a close eye on it.

Myra 💜

Hi Myra, sure you are welcome also read the comment Diane said here that's important to note.

Hi - the general chatter among SEO gurus seem to indicate that this update focused on EEAT.

And, in particular, looking for evidence that the writer of the posts has sufficient expertise on the subject.

Checking the About Me page, looking for an Author box, looking for links to profiles on LinkedIn or social media.

Hi Diane,

Interesting! Thanks for the added information that I had omitted! It is significantly helpful, thanks for that. I am aware that the E.E.A.T is relevant. I understood that part. It will be interesting to see further developments.

Oops blimey me! I forgot the author box tsk tsk (at myself) that's not on mine but I will add it. Did you use a plugin for that or inside of Wordpress?

It's a lot to remember for SEO! My brain 🧠 hurts when I think about all these things that I need to do. The E.E.A.T. part is what I am focusing on.

I use the Simple Author Box plugin.

You can set it to appear under each post, and in the Sidebar for extra visibility!

Great. Thanks. I’ll get it to it right away. Otherwise, I’d forget. Thanks for the reminder.

I have been meaning to do this for a while now, just didn't explore yet how to,thanks!

Hi Lizzy, same here. Im glad I am not the only one. Whew! I thought my 60-year-old brain was getting feeble.

I'm sure it is not feeble yet Brenda haha!
There is so much to do in a day and things to do for a website, that the things-to-do on the list gets way too large :-)
But I think it is important for your brand awareness, just like a little icon in front of the website when you Google it.
My website has a cute little house icon in front of it on Google and it makes it so much more credible for viewers and it catches the attention.
You learn while going along!

Haha. Thanks for the support. Aw, you're so sweet. Yes, you are right; we learn as we go along.

have you figured it out, the author box?
I can't even find where to insert a picture and Google isn't making me any wiser ahaha!

Hi - go to Users in your WordPress settings, and scroll down to see the Biographical Info.

Fill in your details, that you want to be shown.

Whatever you put there, will be added to the Author Box.

I see, thanks Diane!
Lizzy

I fell asleep while working on installing the plugin. I had to stop. I went to bed. I'm up now. I will do it today. I am glad Diane explained what to do.

I have fixed it in the meantime, thanks again @dianescarpio . Still figuring out the colors though,as I want it to be good for screenreaders this time -)
Lizzy

Absolutely. I will work on it today. I will check the screen readers here if it can read mine I will let you know.
