The Benefits of Social Media

Last Update: May 17, 2014

Starting your online business requires many tasks that need to be implemented in order for you to be successful. The benefits of social media will play a big part in how you can generate awareness and thus traffic to your website. Social media is where people hang out online and many of these people are potential customers for what you have to offer.

In this day and age you need to recognize and utilize social media as the best way to market and advertise what it is that you have to offer from your website. In order to do so you need to know which social media websites are right for you. I will explain in this blog post what I personally have come to learn from my experience in dealing with a few of the most popular social media networks.

GOOGLE+, PINTEREST, TWITTER & FACEBOOK

When it comes to sharing my website content on social media, I concentrate on 4 of the 5 big-membership social media networks. This is the order from most beneficial to least that I use when it comes to sharing my content. The best and most beneficial for increased Google rankings is Google+. DUH! No surprise there. The next beneficial social network for me is Pinterest, then Twitter and then Facebook.

Yes, Facebook is the biggest of all social media networks with approximately 1,000,000,000 members but lately more and more people who are in the know of social media have been leaving Facebook and finding better results with other sites. If you haven't read Gordi's blog post on Facebook Changes and the link she provides at the end of her blog, I highly recommend you do so here - https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/gordi/blog/facebook-changes

Google+ is the second largest social media network with approximately 500,000,000 members and growing quicker than Facebook. This is mainly because many like myself are leaving Facebook for better reach in the sharing of our content for increased traffic. I prefer Google+ because not only is it better for your Google rankings but there is less clutter to view which Facebook has way too much of.

Though I do not use LinkedIn as much, they are the third largest network with approximately 200,000,000 members. The fourth largest is Twitter with approximately 93,800,000 members and is the simplest and fastest way to share content because you are basically just posting a link to your website with a couple of hashtags and a few other words. You only get 140 characters spaces to use.

And last but certainly not the least is Pinterest, which is my second favorite of all of the social media networks. Their membership is approximately 70,000,000 members and growing fast. Why is Pinterest my second favorite? Because people are more visual by nature and it is easier to sell something when you entice people with a visual rather than text. This is why TV ads typically do better than any other form of advertisement. Because Pinterest is built on visuals it is very important that you have at least 2-3 images on every one of your web pages and posts if you wish to use Pinterest to share your content.

THE BENEFITS

It's pretty obvious what benefits social media networks can have for the marketing of your website content. They bring your website attention and awareness which will increase traffic, as well as to help boost your Google rankings. Another great benefit of social media is the ability of shared content to be shared over and over again by other people. This is like free advertising because you don't have to do any of the promoting. If your content is well written it will advertise and promote itself.

When other people on social media start sharing your content you will also get other people linking to your content which in turn can increase your page rank. The more reputable a website or blogger is that links to your website content, the bigger the boost to your page rank. So let's say you share on social media some website content about how to get better gas mileage out of your car that is unique and interesting. It then gets re-shared and eventually someone from Car and Driver magazine, a highly reputable website, reads it and likes it enough to link to it. So now your page rank will get a nice boost.

By sharing your content on social media and sharing often, you are marketing your content with the hope of other people marketing it for you by re-sharing. If what you originally share is groundbreaking it could very well go viral and that is the ULTIMATE in getting a lot of website traffic. You NEVER want to pay for traffic or likes because they do not help your website. Doing the work yourself, by writing quality content and then sharing that content everyday will bring about better quality traffic.

THE PINTEREST EFFECT

One of the reasons why Pinterest membership is growing fast is because it is a great way to market what you are selling. Like I said earlier, it is easier to entice someone with an image rather than just text because people are visual by nature. The sense of sight is the strongest and sharing photos and images is a powerful way to market something.

In recent years this form of image sharing has also been embraced by Google+, Facebook, Twitter and others because visual sharing gets more clicks. I call this image sharing revelation by the other social networks, The Pinterest Effect. This is why when I share on social media I prefer to post a picture associated with the content I am sharing along with the content link. I do this knowing that it will get more clicks than if I just shared the content link alone which only posts a small thumbnail picture.

NOTE: Google+, Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook are the four that I use the most. You should choose which ones are right for you. Youtube is also another great way to market and share. I am actually starting to get into this myself. Once I know more about the successes I have with Youtube, I will write another blog post about it. Until then I know that Google+, Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook in that order are the social media networks that I use. If any of you have other favorites, please list them below and share with us what you like about them. Thanks!

Thanks mate. I struggle with the whole social media thing. I am trying my best with it though. I have written two novels ( still trying to publish) thousands of words that have been in print in magazines, training material and presentations. Ask me to keep up a stream of 140 character comments and I am lost:)

Thanks for sharing this information with us Robert. I have a question, which is how do I get Pinterest to show on my site? I have all the others but Kyle does not include this one in his tutorial.
When I go to sociable plugins Pinterest is not there.

You can do one of 2 things. You can either use a different plugin like AddToAny which has the Pinterest button or you can add the Pinterest Pin It plugin. Obviously these would be the greatest advantage to your website visitors.

However you personally do not need any of the social share buttons to share your content on social media. All you would have to do is share the content directly from within your Pinterest, Facebook, Google+, and Twitter accounts. This is how I personally share my content as it gives me more options in how I want to share it. The share buttons are strictly for my website readers.

Thanks Robert. I joined google+, pinterest, linkedIn and twitter. I am staying away from facebook and I'm happy to see you mention that people are moving away from it. It is becoming too cluttered and trashy. I haven't had any following on pinterest though, I may be doing something wrong. I'm still new to it. Great insight as always. Thanks again.

With Pinterest, like other social media networks, you have to start following other people before they will start following you. Search for people that have similar interests and start to follow them. Most times they will follow you back.

Robert, an excellent overview of the quality and quantity aspects of social sharing. Totally agree about the visual. Am improving daily in my image editor and have my white paper clients.
G+ is my primary. The images are growing in size in my timeline with more animation and rather complex editing. Nice to find their imaging specs. My circles are growing, so are my hangouts. LinkedIn takes more time and work. Twitter is easier. Facebook is distracting, remains personal, although Bothewebguy is convincing. Follow several of my other network friends adding to their FB likes, thanks to Trialynnn. Started with Pinterest several months ago, liking their website template, have shared several images. Stumble Upon may become my next adventure. We just only have enough time in a day to market while creating content remains more consuming, which it must.
Thank you for Gordi's link, it's on my list for later today. ^_~
P.S. Am sending a couple your way to your gaming site. A PM later.
Reply

I totally agree with you Linda, Facebook is distracting. Plus most of the quality traffic I get comes from Google+, Pinterest & Twitter. Facebook has so much clutter and it seems like all they are after is "Likes" which for me is just plain stupid! Like Beverley said below, "...unless they turn into sales the question to be asked is so what" and that's how I feel about Facebook. This is one of the reasons why they are my least favorite and productive of the Social Media networks.

So now I'm going to look into YouTube because just like Pinterest they are a visual network and videos also boost rankings and lower the bounce rate on your webpages...So much to do and learn, so little time. But thankfully I have this week off from work. :-)

Hi Robert
I enjoy Pinterest and Twitter though I haven't used either recently. I think the problem with all social networks is that it's possible to spend a lot of time on them but the ROI is often quite poor - and it's difficult for people to know quite how to balance out their efforts. I often see people boasting about the number of followers or connections, or likes etc but unless they turn into sales the question to be asked is so what. A handful of loyal, repeat customers can actually be more lucrative than thousands who are just looking.

So although I am a fan of social networks and they can undoubtedly boost - site rankings, sales and ultimately income - for some it can be an awful lot of 'noise' and may not be worth it. :) Beverley
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
This is true Beverly that's why I only use social media as way to share content and then LEAVE! Like Kyle says, "hanging out on Facebook or Twitter or another social medium is not social marketing. This is what we like to call wasting time."

When I'm working I discipline myself to only work the social media marketing aspect. Anything else can wait until I'm done working. Social media is beneficial if you approach it the right way and not let yourself get distracted by it. Discipline is key.

You manually post all of them to social media? I just find it harder to add in the picture from a post on Facebook. Google+ and Pinterest usually let's you select which picture you want use. I actually think that some of us could use a little more marketing training with social media.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Yes, I manually post the pictures on all of the networks except Pinterest. I don't need to post pictures manually with Pinterest because they display the full size image. However with the others unless you upload the picture first and then attach your link, you will not get a large sized image. You will get an image, and the ability to choose if you have more than one, but the image will not be as large as it would be if you just uploaded a picture on its own.

Good post, Robert. I try to pay attention to what I click on in social media. What intrigues me, capture my interest. That's what we should strive for with our posts; things that are interesting, informative, motivating, inspirational. "Opportunities" and Ads, I scroll right by. And I agree about the pictures, they need to tell your story on their own and then draw you into the post. Thanks for this, again. All the best to you and your YouTube venture.

You are welcome Rick and thank you for your best wishes in my journey into YouTube land. I already know that YouTube videos are good for rankings and I have been wanting to explore that avenue of marketing, to expand my knowledge and learn new things. You're absolutely right Robert in your assertion that people are visual by nature. If something looks appealing our curiosity permits us to investigate this further. Although I'm still in the premature stages of marketing via social media, I do find Google plus seems to be working in my favour.
