High Visibility Clothing - Can a Color be a Niche?

I am sure most of us have seen people, mostly those who work outside like construction workers and law enforcement, wearing some kind of high visibilty clothing. Lately I have seen the application of this kind of clothing becoming a bit more mainstream.

CAN A COLOR BE A NICHE?

I would be interested in your thoughts on this question. But first let me explain to you why I am asking. There are so many reasons why a person would like to be seen when out in public. Being able to alert others of your presence can be quite beneficial.

Perhaps you are hiking through the woods and would want to make sure that any potential nearby hunters realize you are a human and not some animal rustling about among the trees. A high visibility t-shirt would provide the solution.

When I was on vacation down in Cape May Point, I noticed all of the school crossing guards were wearing bright light green shirts that said Crossing Guard on the back. You could see these people from far away as you drove the streets.

And today while driving around town I came upon a group of cyclists doing some sort of charity ride. I was able to notice them about a quarter mile away. How? They were all wearing high visibility bicycle helmets.

So I started thinking. Can a specific color be a niche? There was a time when only emergency personnel would wear these types of clothing. Now I see landscapers, event coordinators, truck drivers, garbage collectors, and many others who work outside wearing bright light green.

Under normal circumstances I doubt that you could form a niche based on a specific color. However it seems to me that this bright light green color is becoming more popular by many different people. Because of this, I think this could be a new niche in some way, or one that has been over-looked.

As you can see from the images, I did a search on Google for High Visibility items. In addition to Amazon I found many companies selling these specific colored products. Some of them had affiliate programs. Even my neighbor wears high visibility sneakers when he goes jogging.

ORDINARY PEOPLE NOW WEAR IT

Though this particular color is still very popular with those in law enforcement, emergency personnel, and construction crews, ordinary people are either seeing a need for this or just want to stand out. I do like my neighbor's running shoes.

Can you think of a niche website having to do with some kind of high visibility clothing? There is already a website devoted to high visibility clothing and accessories. So this interest in products that make people standout from the rest of the population is a niche.

Knowing this, what kind of an affiliate marketing website could you come up with? One could start a website about safety products for cyclists, hunters, outdoor enthusiasts, and transportation drivers to name a few. Even I am thinking of buying a high visibility t-shirt.

There have been a few times when I have provided transport to people going to and from their doctor appointments, where such a shirt would have helped. I had to pick up an elderly woman once at a crowded mall. Had I been wearing such a shirt, she could have found me quicker.

HIGH VISIBILITY KEYWORDS

Let us look at some keywords. In the title of this post I used the keyword High Visibility Clothing. It has monthly searches of 463, monthly traffic of 79, and a QSR of 186. According to Jaaxy this keyword has a KQI with a "Great" rating.

If you were to do a keyword search in Jaaxy for the keyword "High Visibility" you will see several keywords one could use for either the title of a post or a name for a website. In addition to the keyword I used as the title of this post I found these.

  • High Visibility Workwear - 598 Searches / 102 Traffic / 147 QSR / Great KQI
  • High Visibility Vest - 478 Searches / 82 Traffic / 127 QSR / Great KQI
  • High Visibility Coat - 157 Searches / 27 Traffic / 100 QSR / Great KQI
  • High Visibility Safety Vests - 128 Searches / 22 Traffic / 177 QSR / Great KQI
  • Other names / keywords for this particular color are Day Glow Green and Neon Green.

If you were to use the alphabet soup technique you can find many related keywords. This is just a sampling of great keywords you can use. With all of the many uses for high visibility clothing in our current society, I feel this is a niche that will continue to get popular.

I do not feel that the color itself is the niche but I feel the color is a major contributor of what kind of niche to promote. This is a color that is being used by people to bring attention to themselves for safety purposes. However, others are using the color as a fashion statement.

HAVE YOU NOTICED HOW MANY ITEMS ARE THIS COLOR?

Here is just a small sampling of products I have noticed recently that are now using this high visibility, neon green color to make them stand out. This goes way beyond clothing.

Pedestrian and School Crossing signs that used to be Yellow and Black have now been replaced with those that are Day Glow Green and Black.

More and more Traffic Cones which most times are orange, like seen above, are now this high visibility green with a stripe of reflective white for night time use. I have also noticed the following.

  • Umbrellas
  • Backpacks
  • Stairway Edging
  • Motor Vehicle Color
  • License Plate Frames
  • Water Bottles
  • Company Signs, just look at H&R Block's logo
  • Sunglass Frames
  • Hunting Gun Cases
  • Fire Engines
  • New York City Taxis, see below

hmmm... light green color might be a trend in the worldwide, but in China, it represents for a bad thing. There is one story behind the reason why you can not find the green color in China.

Because that green color (or bright light green ) means you are cheating or being cheated.

In China decades ago, a wife has been cheating on her husband back. Every time her husband goes out, the wife always asks the husband to wear one green hat (high visibility color like you describe above) -> that green hat is the secret symbol for her secret lover to recognize that the wife is available. The secret lover can stop by. (at the same time, we can see how smart the wife is)

Then, no secret can last forever. You guys can guess what is the consequence -.-

Therefore, in unofficial ways, there is not the green color ( mixed green color with other colors is fine) in the marketplace in any industries in China since then.

Thank you, Boomer, for sharing.

That is quite interesting how the reason for not having that particular color available.

Clearly the idea for using this high visibility day glow neon green color as a niche, though extremely popular here in the U.S., it will differ in other counties.

yeah :) it's good that we don't need to promote the light bright green products in China.

I think it is a GREAT idea! I am always concerned of colors. You could branch out and write about what colors look best on people There is also a personality test that goes by colors. Lots of possibilities.

Thank you and yes, there are a lot of possibilities when it comes to colors, especially those that draw attention. I have noticed this high visibility day glow neon green color being used almost everywhere, even as accent colors on clothing and accessories.

Great idea Rob!

Thank you.

Yes, color is a niche

What an Ace!

Yes, especially this high visibility day glow neon green color.

Absolutely
Just smaching

Thanks for showing new option. First thing what came to my mind it was that all these clothes, gear and things need fashion or designer hand. It seems that you want to run away from these things as soon as possible. Maybe it is the reason why they use this type of color. All the best:)

You are welcome. The use of this color definitely works when a person or an object wants and needs to be seen. You can see it better in the daylight and also at night when light is shined on it. If one wants to standout visually in a crowd of people, wearing some form of clothing in a day glow neon green color will achieve that aim.

This is such a great post-Rob and yes the mind certainly gets working with ideas on this one
Loving the colour. Here in New Zealand, it is not as prominent yet but I guess this will happen here as well
Thanks for the share
Vicki

Thank you Vicki.

Since researching and being more aware of this color being used more and more by the mainstream population here in the U.S., it has definitely stirred my imagination into what kinds of focused niches can come of this.

Here in this country, with all of the vehicle and population congestion out on the streets, high visibility colors have become quite popular. The use of day glow or neon green has proven to be more visually outstanding.

It used to be that all pedestrian and school crossing road signs were yellow with black lettering. Now they are this high visibility green with black lettering. This makes them much easier to see from far away both in the day and at night.

Very interesting niche concept.

Yes it is. When you think about it, high visibility colors can add an extra layer of protection in some niches and become a specific more narrowed down niche.

Example, let us say your niche was bicycle safety gear. Obviously the items one could promote would be helmets, gloves, knee guards, goggles, bike reflectors,...

Each of these could be day-glow green, making it easier for people to see a cyclist in any shade of daylight and at night when the headlights of a car should shine upon it.

Hey Robert,
Great post!!! Another thing is that in my granddaughter's school each grade will have a different bright neon color for their class shirts. These are to be worn on All class field trips so the teacher can quickly see who belongs in the group. I thought this was a clever idea!!

Tried and True

Elaine

This is a great idea!

Thank you Elaine.

That is a great idea the school has for using the different colored high visibility shirts. Like I said in the post above, there are so many applications and uses for this kind of color for when people want to get noticed and seen. I really feel that this can turn into a new niche.

Great post-Robert. In the US we migrated from the old yellow and black stop signs to red octagonal. Now with some indicators, color analysts are moving to the lime green tint at one end of the spectrum and blaze orange at the other.
I can see where lime-green shows light better in a dark environment.

I agree Michael. I cannot remember exactly where I had seen this but I did see the use of the high visibility green being used for Stop Signs. This color is definitely brighter and more reflective at night than red.

Out of the many high visibility colors, it seems like the day-glow neon green color is being used the most. Since writing this post, I am seeing this color used for so many things.

Pretty awesome Boomer!.

High visibility (in my opinion) make be a market..but hell yeah some freaking great niches that can be niched down and dominated much easier..

High visibility workwear for men - pretty awesome..as would high visibility safety gear for men/women (being specific here for a reason!).

As I have found in my brief research for this post and in my observations driving around in New York City area, there are a lot of applications for high visibility green colored items.

I agree that High Visibility is a niche market and that you can come up with some great narrowed down sub niches. I really like your niche idea of High Visibility Work Wear For Men (or Women).
