4 Figures in 1 Year. Finally! (Quick Update)

Last Update: December 04, 2018

Hi WA fam,

This is a quick update on my Amazon niche site.

(I posted a detailed income report on my blog.)

Anyway...

On October 29, 2018 my Amazon site that I've been working on turned 1 year old.

I was using the "best of" strategy thanks to Dylan's posts/training (@dylanrieger).

  • Traffic: dropped to 200-250 after Google Birthday Update
  • Amazon clicks: between 35-75
  • # of posts: 48

You might be wondering:

How much I made in the last few months?

May 2018: $172

June 2018: $178

July 2018: $270

August 2018: $325

Sep 2018: $522

Oct 2018: $1585 (Thanks to some real high end sales in my niche.)

Gives you perspective, doesn't it?

It feels SOOOOO good to finally be making 4 figures and it took me "only" a year!

Patience, work and proper knowledge on SEO pay off.

Advice for newbies:

- Follow the training.

- Connect with people, ask questions.

- Do the work and be PATIENT. It's a business and it takes some time to take off.

Dig your way to success!

Note:

I will likely stop posting monthly income reports, unless I hit some new big milestones to motivate fellow WA'ers.

QUESTION:

Let me know if you think whether 1 year is too long/little to be making $1500+?

We all want quick results but I've come to realize that 1 year isn't that long, especially if the first 6 months a new website is in the "Sandbox Period".

And I can only imagine what income I would've made if I had more energy/time to work on my website.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts in the comments and I wish you success on your journey!

- Zarina

P.S.

To clarify:

I've been here at WA for 3 years but my website that brought me 4 figures is 1 y/o. So, when I started my Amazon site I already had the foundation.

Hi Zarina,
That must be so encouraging.
I appreciate you taking the time to lay it out like you did.

It helps people to understand what to expect in this business. A good strategy, hard work, a good foundation, and a lot of patience.

Rooting for you to hit the 5 figures in 1 month :)

That's amazing, Zarina. $1500 after 1 year is great! Can't wait to see how your 2nd year unfolds, I got the feeling it will take off. The first year is always the most difficult, so glad you made it through. :)

I just started to write best of lists recently, got 2 articles finished so far.
I would love to know what your ratio is of how to articles/best of lists or reviews. Basically how many commercial posts for every how-to article without affiliate links? Thank you so much, you're a great inspiration.

Thank Phil! I am excited to see its progress for sure :)

Best of posts certainly work! So good for you. Make sure you create lengthy, quality posts so that you can outrank your competition.

I have about 1000 words for info posts, always over 1500+ word for individual reviews and 3500+ for best of posts. Some articles have more than 6000 words.

As for best of vs how to articles, honestly, I have a lot less info/how-to posts than I should but I think 65/35 or 60/40 ratio should be good.

Some people do 1 review, 1 best of and 1 info every 3 articles.

Hope this helps!

Hey Zarina!

What a great report from you! Thanks for sharing your details.

I don't think 4 figures in 1 year is too long. There doesn't seem to be really a consistent time table.

The timing to 4 figures really depends on your niche, how much time and content you put forth in your website. That's definitely the trend I've noticed here. I've also noticed that MMO niche can take more time and more posts.

Varied timing examples:

It took Jerry 2 months to start seeing sales on his MMO site- but he posted 20 - 23 posts a month consistency and reached 100 posts fairly quick. Also his site was not new. He just started really focusing on site content and traffic. It took Mike/AffTraining 3 years before he saw sales on his MMO site and posted 4 times a week. It took Grace/LittleMama 19 months to break 4 figures on her MMO site and increased content production month by month until she was publishing daily. Question for you? Your amazon niche site is doing great! How is your MMO site doing for you? Just curious. I've shifted to MMO site and realize more and more everyday that the competitive stakes are much higher and it will be like 3X more effort, content etc to possibly even compete.

I'm inspired, thanks again for sharing your insights and update!

Thanks for sharing such great comment, Kim! I probably should add you to my list of fav WA commenters to connect with :)

Yeah MMO niche certainly is harder to crack and will definitely take more time and more content to see legit progress.

I will be honest, I wasn't working on WA site much, between my Amazon site and post-surgery recovery process, I had very little energy to work on WA site too. But I do have writers and I will get to publish a bit more and more content. Not sure if I have enough time to make it to Vegas though. (Still 100 sales to be made).

I must admit, when I first joined I did want to earn quickly.

Once I got started with the training, made my way around the platform and interacted with some awesome members, I realized that I needed to focus on my website and leave the money making up to it.

For a new website? I think making 4 figures in a year is awesome and sooner than expected.

You have done a great job. Now, just think, if you had more time and worked on your site even more, you could be doing even better than you are.

Wishing you continued success my friend : )

I guess we are all are guilty in wanting to make $ fast especially when our financial situation is pressing.

I can only imagine how much more I could earn if I were to produce more content but I have to spread my energy evenly between work and physiotherapy. Good thing now I can use $ on more massages, therapy sessions to speed up my healing process!

Well done Zarina, great news, it just shows what can be achieved with hard and consistent work. It looks like you have written approximately one blog post per week, which isn't actually that many, but probably your consistency has paid off!

Congratulations to you and have a great day.

Yeah it was approximately that and it's actually was often enough, given that a lot of my energy was going into post-surgery recovery. But consistence and high quality definitely played a role. Thank you!

It really is amazing what can be achieved on the Internet, one blog post a week really isn't that much and the fact that you are recovering from surgery probably slowed things down. I hope that you are fully recovered and pushing forward to your next goal, keep up the good work and thank you for the inspiring blog posts.

Hi Zarina, you're such a good model to be followed. I'm one of those who almost want to give up - my time and efforts are not supporting me, and financially tied-up. Why are there so many barriers when I found the right way. Your post inspired me again. As I wrote this remarks I can't help but cry. Not a self-pity, but I felt I wasted many chances. I am super happy for you! This is great news and very inspiring! I actually have some questions about amazon... We have put a few links and got some sales but none of them have qualified... so sales we made, we never got any money for it!.. I have to tell you that amazon is not our best friend at the moment and would love if you could explain how you made it work for you... Obviously, it is clearly working for a lot of you, We aare wondering what are we not doing right?

If you've made sales through your Amazon links, you should be paid at the end of the month. Have you checked your Amazon Associates account? Do you have a payment receiving method set up with them? The only reason you wouldn't be paid is if they returned the items, or you somehow broke Amazon's TOS.
Reply
Zarina Premium
Hi Sonia (or Rachel?),

There are a couple of reasons why sales weren't qualified:
- purchases were made by you or your friends (it's against the policy)
- people bought and then canceled the order

You could try to contact Amazon support, hopefully they'll clarify it for you.

Also check out Dylan's training to ensure you have better sales

I think hitting 4 figures within a year is great and I would have loved to see such results on my website as well.

I have 116 posts on my website and December 2018 will mark my 1 year mark. I only started making money in October; I made $47.

But it's okay. I know I'm in a very competitive niche and thus, I know it will take longer to get off the ground.

Congrats and I'm happy that your niche is working out for you and being able to make so much money with only 48 posts?!?!?! That's amazing! It really shows the potential of affiliate marketing.

Thanks for sharing!

Yeah everyone moves at his own pace and that's fine. As long as you don't get discouraged! What niche are you in?

I am also in a competitive (and expensive) niche, so I guess that's why it took my 1 full year to hit 4 figures.

As for the number of posts, yeah, with the whole surgery and post-surgery recovery period I sometimes felt too exhausted to do any work. And even editing freelancers' work took a lot of work.

I am certain the main reason it took off is because I used the best of strategy often.

Keep in mind that the first 6 months a new website is in the "Sandbox period", like on a trial with Google. So you might want to give yourself a bit more time if you want to make 4 figures. IMHO.

You said that a key to your success in breaking $1,000/month was due to high end product sales. What does that mean for those reading this? Should we write high end product reviews even if we have not used the product? How can I leverage this insight?

Thank you so much and I hope you make it a great day!
Reply
SteveMand Premium
Yep generally that is what all of those who succeed in creating Amazon niche sites do.
Reply
SondraM Premium
Alex, I would try to pick out high end products that you or someone close to you actually uses. Or maybe you can find something that you can borrow or test out.

Nothing turns off a high end buyer faster than someone who acts like they know what they are talking about when they don't.

Look around your house. I am sure you have some high end products - whether they are related to your automobile, home furnishings or a hobby. Just make certain you are willing to spend hours and hours talking and writing about the item.

(My high end products are homes and ranches. There is not an affiliate marketing program for them though.... Those commissions are allowing me to build my affiliate marketing business. )
Reply
Zarina Premium
I'd say the key to my success is quality content first :) using the "best of strategy". I followed Dylan's advice: But yeah, this month there were a lot of high end sales made. Within $3500 per product (which was about $150 in commission).

Generally speaking, most of the products I promote are between $500-2000. I purposely chose a pretty expensive niche.

Now in terms of your question.

Think of it this way...

When you were asked to write an essay in uni, you don't actually perform studies, whether it's science, politics etc. You do a thorough research and based on multiple resources, you write a quality essay.

Same thing here. Of course it helps if you know subject matter at least a little bit. But you can rely on Amazon reviews, search "issues with X product", watch videos. Once you have all the knowledge you write a post.

Like Sondra said, you should be confident in your article. In order to be confident, you need to know what you're talking about, even if it's something you haven't personally tried. It's very important.

Besides:

When you write best of post articles, you don't even need to write lengthy descriptions. Just outlining features in an interesting way. Read Dylan's training, he mentions that too.

So, with best of posts you can have 10-15 products and have 300 words per each. Intro + conclusion + buying guide section and you have 3000-4500+ word article.

Hope this helps.

AlexO1 Premium
I appreciate all your help.

That sounds like an interesting niche Sondra. I did not know you could have an affiliate site with homes and ranches. That is a new one for me.

I appreciate your thorough comment Zarina. $3500 is a big sale and a sizeable commission.

300 words for about 10 to 15 products is totally doable. I can see myself writing a lot of articles like that. That is a very good idea.

Thank you so much and I hope you all make it a great day!

Congratulations and thanks for sharing! You are doing great! If this amount is reasonable for a site that has been up for 12 months, is not that easy to tell - I like to keep track of the hours of work I have put in as well, and I am sure you do that too. We all know you have to put in more time for less money in the beginning, then we hit ’the big one’ just like the picture is illustrating! So, just keep going - work more on what is working and let go of what is not. Wishing you great months to come!

Honestly, I don't really keep track of my hours, sometimes I am typing like a madman and sometimes I can take a week or so for break (laziness or burnout).

Yeah, I definitely need to write a review (I don't even have just a separate post on WA yet). Ugh, I have no idea how you found so much energy to write articles every day! I feel like I am spreading myself thin even though I barely do any work on WA site.

And yes, it's 48 posts in total! But they are certainly high quality, always over 1500+ word for individual reviews and 3500+ for best of posts. Some articles have more than 6000 words.

That's the beauty of using Dylan's strategy, especially if you find low competition keywords!

Seeing successes doesn't get old for me, I'm still just like you trying to keep building so seeing such amazing success, I get just as excited as I did when I first started here at WA.

You've also grown to be one of my WA faves, so that makes a difference too. ;)

I've been changing my strategy on my WA site the last couple of months since Vegas, and it's not doing well... well expected drop in everything because I don't want to write product reviews anymore.

It just makes me wonder why I keep going on a competitive niche when I could be just making a new site like yours.

I freaking am able to write a lot so I can dominate any less competitive niche with the way I write so I don't know what I'm waiting for.

I guess there are still things I want to do with my WA site, I want to bring it to a point that I can have conversion rates of 12 - 15% but this may take me another 2 years to do.

I'll just have to start another site slowly I guess, like the way you have done, 4 posts a month.... I can do that right?!
Reply
Zarina Premium
Yeah, I think I remember you saying that you don't want to write reviews anymore since there are some dangerous scammers out there. Honestly, I never liked writing reviews maybe that's why I never really pushed with my old WA site.

Still would be nice to make it to Vegas though!

Honestly, I think you'll kill it with Amazon niche site! 🙌

Dylan's "best of" strategy definitely works, I have a few posts ranking on page 1 but I am fairly certain all those huge sales were from the most ranked post (in position 0 with snippets).

What I am trying to say is that even if you have 1 post out of 50 ranking in position 0, it makes a huge difference and makes 1/3 of the traffic.

You definitely can do it and I will be happy to share everything I learned with my site! 💪

The moment an email about this pop up on my phone, I feel like Wowww... I know you are making money entirely from Amazon. A little bit different compared to others that making money with WA.

So, after read this, really motivate me to keep doing.

Just a few question, do you sell amazon products that less than $20?

I'm planning to do Arduino/electronics blog that cost around $1-5 per components.

So, a project might cost around $20-50. And I know that average commission from Amazon like 4%.

After doing some calculation, it is not really profitable.

So, should I just stick with this niche?
Reply
Zarina Premium
Hi Muhamad,

Yes, while I have WA site, I decided to focus on Amazon niche site for now to make a consistent income.

Nope, my niche is pretty expensive, medium-high end items (from $500 to $5000). Because of that I can make only a few sales but have higher commissions.

If you have cheap products, it'll take you years to have LOTS of traffic and make that much money.

You'll need hundreds if not thousands of sales of low priced items vs. 100 sales of high end items to make $1500 (like I did in October).

I strongly recommend you focus on a niche with at least $200 per product. Unless you are willing to put it a lot of work and be super patient to break 4 figures. What you can do is stick with the similar niche but choose more expensive products to list.

Personally, when I started my site I purposely looked for medium to high end products niche. It happened to be one I enjoy too.

Just my 2 cents. :)
