Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants

'Standing on the shoulders of giants' is not to be mixed up with the book by Stephen Hawking, 'On the shoulders of giants' which is like a compilation of some of the best known scientific works by greats such as Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Newton and Einstein. I mean it's probably a good read and all that but it's not the topic of conversation here.

I'm referring to the 'phrase' that is actually a metaphor. To quote the definition I found (which

just sums it up better than I could)

"Using the understanding gained by major thinkers who have gone before in order to make intellectual progress".

Yes, that's what I'm talking about. As per usual, this wasn't what I had planned but as in life, we have to be willing to adapt and be flexible. Like a tree in the wind.

It was a fluke, as most posts tend to be in this neck of the woods. I had just dropped one of my sons off at the bus stop and was listening to the radio on the way back. They had a celebrity on during the morning show and he was talking about his latest TV series. He has to do some 'extreme' things. He is reluctant to do a few of these things, as anyone would be, if asked to do a parachute jump or maybe go 'wing-walking'

A number of times they have managed to persuade him by telling a story of someone who has done the feat before. For example, when asked to have a go in one of those 'G-force simulators' (You know, you sit in a pod and it spins round mad fast) he was against it, right up until the point where they told him that Neil Armstrong had actually sat in the same seat.

In the conversation, he said the line 'Standing on the shoulders of giants' and that got me thinking. My thought process was helped by having some breakfast. Have you ever had 'Lotus Biscoff' biscuits ? They come in little packs of three, the sort of thing you might find in a hotel next to the 'teas maid'. They are very 'moreish'. The other day my eldest introduced me to a delicacy I was not aware even existed. A lotus 'biscoff' spread. Oh boy, talk about sublime. It's proper mouth-watering.

So, while I was having a 'moment' with my toast, I thought about the phrase and how it applies to what we do, or could do, here. We already have our 'giants' already firmly in place. Kyle, Carson and Jay.

All we have to do is stand on their shoulders. That's it, nothing more and nothing less. I mean, it really is as easy as that. They have given us the template and the tools, all we have to do is fill in the blanks. There is no reason to re-invent the wheel. The formula works. Why change it. Yet we do. Why is that ?

It also occurred to me that they are not the only giants in our midst. I 'm not going to list them all but I will mention a couple because if, by some bizarre twist of fate, you haven't come across them, it's time to make their acquaintance. I use these two as examples because they are the most recent but there is a liturgy of others.

First is Eddy Salomon, here's his latest post.

Then we have Littlemama and here's her latest post. This post in itself is one of the best I have seen for breaking it all down into the simplest form. It really doesn't get much more straightforward than this.

If earning your first million and going to Vegas are on your 'to do' list, then I suggest you check out these two posts.

I'll leave you with a few words that I scribbled down when I was listening to a short video on YouTube this morning. Funny how these things just 'appear' isn't it.

"The difference between you and any great leader, CEO, entrepreneur or successful business person, is dedication"

"Anything you want to get for yourself, requires you to give something in exchange. Any dream you want to accomplish, asks for your sacrifice"

Have a fabulous Friday.

Great message my friend! Thank you for sharing! I am standing on the shoulders of so many giants...🙂

Thank you Shahila, I think most of us are. Luckily there are many here.

Very true, Twack, and it reminds me of everyone who complains that they're not earning fast enough, etc., etc.! It takes DEDICATION--not only for weeks or months, but for the LONG HAUL!

Couldn't agree more Jeff. That was actually one of the major 'appeals' for me. I have used the same analogy that you used in your latest post, in regard to any new business. It was one of the first things I learnt when looking at becoming self-employed (mainly toward paying tax) that you shouldn't expect to be turning a profit in your first year or years.
I am never sure why, just because we're online, that the expectation should be any different.

Especially considering the stiff and numerous competition!

Exactly, even more so because of that.

You're right, Twack--that's why it takes time and hard work!

As JFK said ask not what your community can do for you but what you can do for your community....Brilliant motivational post!
Must try these "Lotus Biscof Biscuits" have tried all sorts Biscof Biscuits but since your recommending I'm trying funny what trust does..;)
R.

Thank you Rami.
I gave up chocolate a year or so ago, so I have to look further a field to satisfy those 'sweet tooth' urges. They seem to do the job admirably but the spread is something else.
Have an outstanding day and thank you for popping in.

Thank you, I wish you like wise!.
I'm in the same boat on the sweets only mine has so far been a looooooong five years as you humourously put it lols and with the same sweet tooth urges you can empathize with my biscuits? what biscuits! slant. Forgive me lol :

It's surprising how our tastes change though, once you takeout certain things. Now, even 'Rich Tea' biscuits are tantalisingly appealing.

lols! Precisely! Oh for the taste of a rich chocolate digestive McVitie's! of course;

Fabulous. I've read both the post of Eddy and of Grace and they are a real inspiration. But they also made me think. It's true, dedication is necessary. However, I need to enjoy what I'm doing as well. I can't be a typing machine and make 400 posts in a year. In a few years, sure.
I'm ready to give up on many things and some of them are not even a big sacrifice (like not watching tv) because I love learning and going forward. But at my own pace.
I love the analogy with the giants. We are standing on the shoulders of Kyle, Carson and Jay and have everything we need.
Have a wonderful day, my friend!
Love
Lenka

Thank you Lenka, we are on the same page. I ran out of 'attention span length' as in, I was in danger of really going off on one. Had I done, I would have added as you have said.
We should all move at our desired pace and do it in a way where we are still able to enjoy the process. I touched on this in a comment I left on another post recently.
Sure, sometimes we might need to knuckle down but we should still be able to enjoy the journey, have some fun along the way. If we lose sight of that then it just becomes another job.

Thank you again, may your day be epic, as mine most definitely will be.

Yeah, I knew you wouldn't be one of those who would set up a goal for 400 for till the end the year because of Vegas. If you did, I'd be really shocked :)
I've done the hard way before. Now I know better. I can force myself a bit, but not too much.

I have one 'permanent goal' which has remained in place from day one, everything else is fluid. I was thinking about it this morning. We're nearly at the end of January and it's the best time to re-evaluate those monthly targets. Sometimes the smallest of changes now can make a big difference down the line.

Sounds like a great breakfast was had. Great post and enjoy the weekend.
Douglas

Oh it really was, I was past the cereal stage, just needed something inbetween.
Likewise for your weekend Douglas.
