No Follow = No Risk and No Value
According to Bill Hartzer the speaker at DFWSEM meeting
(Bill Hartzer: Search Engine Optimization Consultant - SEO ...

Google can penalize you on a no follow page. They are not to be considered NO RISK, BUT THEY CAN BE CONSIDERED NO VALUE.
I thought no follow meant no read and therefore no penalties!

When you give instructions to Google to not take into consideration a page for SEO purposes. It is done in your SEO package. I use Yoast, so it is done under the ADVANCED tab under Meta Robots. Then you can choose Follow or NoFollow. The default is follow. Let me know if you want to know more Bunn!
Going to bookmark this Terea to refer to later. I purchased All in One SEO prior to hearing most of the WA members saying Yoast was better. I'll get back into my website in a couple of weeks, maybe sooner.

I use Yoast as well. I remember in the training not to have your privacy page followed but why would you not want other pages followed?
If they are sales pages with no real content, just stuff you are trying to make money off of, you might consider a no follow page to keep Google from giving it a very poor SEO score.
I have read a lot on this.. I never use nofollow. I figure I will just let Google sort it out. I may not be helping everything, but I don't want to hurt it...
Hey bothewebguy, do you feel your page has been doing fine without any no follow links? I've been researching a bit myself and I can even see justification for keeping a affiliate link to Amazon, due to the customer reviews and info on the item, so when do you feel would be a right or wrong time to use them?

So if you're going to get penalized for No Follow, is it just better to use the default?
No, Google simply states that if you "abuse" the no follow you can be penalized for it. Basically warning us that unsavory content may well not be ignored just by marking it NO FOLLOW.
Oh, I think I get it. So like the Privacy Policy, no problem, but don't try to hide a bunch of sales links or something, is that it? Thanks Trialynn.
