So ...
Let's see the most important features in action!
With YOAST installed, you'll notice a new YOAST SEO panel below the post/page editor:
Let's take a closer look at each tab ...
1. Content optimization
The "Content optimization" tab has five sections ...
1.1 Snippet Preview
The name is very straightforward. This is where you can see how your post or page will look like on the search engine result page:
And if you click the "Edit snippet" button, you'll reveal an editor panel where you can define an engaing, keyword rich SEO title and meta description and you can edit even the slug if you want. When you reached an optimal length for your SEO title and your meta description, the according bars will become green:
1.2 Readability analysis
Another straightforward name ...
YOAST will give you a bunch of recommendations regarding the readability level of your content:
Personally, I don't really use this feature, but of course, it's your choice ... If you want, you can keep an eye on those red lights ...
1.3 Focus keyphrase
Basically, this is a complete SEO analysis of your entire content. And believe me, these factors are literally vital for your SEO succes!
First of all, you'll have to enter your main keyword in the "Focus keyphrase" entry field. YOAST will instantly analyze the content of your post or page, and you'll get a long list with existing problems, recommended improvements and good results:
And if you expand any of those sections, you'll get a detailed list with clear instructions:
One of the most important factors included in this instant report is the keyword density. As you already know, if is too low, you'll have fewer chances to achieve good rankings and if is to high you could be penalized for keyword stuffing. The recommended keyword density is between 0.5-2.5% and YOAST will give you the exact percentage in any moment as you write your content:
And here are a few more important recommendations, directly from YOAST:
- if you want your page to rank for a specific keyword, you need to write at least 300 words on the subject, or risk it being considered a "thin content" page by Google
- use an engaging meta description that includes the focus keyword
- you need to make clear right from the start what the page is about, so start adding your focus keyword from the start
- when you are adding images, use the focus keyword in the ALT text so that Google can relate that image to the keyword
- if you want to keep your visitors on your site, you'll want to link at least one other related post or page on your site
- a short page title will allow you to add a trigger for a visitor from Google to click to your website
- keep in mind, that if you add your focus keyword at the beginning of your page title, it will have the most value and will immediately stand out when your post is shared
- use your focus keyword in your URL whenever you can
- your goal is to optimize each post or page for a certain keyword, so don’t create posts or pages that compete with each other!
1.4 Add related keyphrase
It's self explanatory ... But it's a Premium only option ...
1.5 Cornerstone content
According to YOAST ...
Cornerstone content is the core of your website. It consists of the best, most important articles on your site; the pages or posts you want to rank highest in the search engines. Cornerstone articles are usually relatively long, informative articles, combining insights from different blog posts and covering everything that’s important about a certain topic.
And this awesome feature will allow you to mark any post or page as a cornerstone content:
2. Social
The "Social" tab is a social media optimization feature which will allow you to easily and efficiently customize your Facebook and Twitter sharing options for any post or page.
You can add a title and a description, and more importantly, you can upload a custom image which makes the content’s image thumbnail format properly when that post or the page page is shared on these social media platforms:
Note: if you want to efficiently leverage this feature, you'll have to create two separate shareable images for each post or page. Recommended sizes: 1200 x 630 px for facebook and 1024 x 512 px for Twitter.
3. Advanced
Finally, the "Advanced" tab ...
A few additional options that will allow you to control the search engine visibility at individual post or page level:
OK. Now let's see some closing thoughts ...
