WordPress Settings and Plugins
In the SETTINGS area of your WordPress dashboard, there are a few basic things you will want to set up.General settings
The main thing to focus on here is customizing the site title and tagline.
This change will take effect on the pages of your site like this:
Next step is the writing area.
What I want to bring your attention here is the UPDATE SERVICES area at the bottom of the page.
Copy and paste this list into the area, overwriting the default service that is already there because it is included in my list.

Now, every time you update a post, it will ping to all of these ping services; however, that may create another problem I want to address. If you ping too much, you can get your site black listed. It is a good idea to install a plug-in called, "WordPress Ping Optimizer."
This will prevent the site from pinging every time you update something, I disable this plug-in after my site is built and I am not updating it non stop.
Next is the reading section...
This is where you will choose whether you want to have your blog as your main page or chose a static page and have the blog roll on a separate page.
In this example I have the blog set as the main page.
What this means is when people land on the actual URL for this site, they are landing on my blog roll, if you want a static page as the main page simply click on A static Page (select below)
choose which page you want for the front page and which one you want for the blog page, or the post page.
If you don't already have your pages made that's OK, the next page of this training will show you how to get your pages built.
Next under settings is Discussion.
The 3 thing I look at here are.
- People are allowed to leave comment
- I don't ask people to leave their name and email to leave a comment, I feel it's better to make it as easy as possible for people to comment.
- I check mark the area that says Comment author must have a previously approved comment, this way I approve the first comment, and the rest from that person will auto post.
