Pages & Post & Categories OH MY!

PAGES
Pages are the main pages of your website. These are what you would feature on your menu bar. Home, About, Blog, Contact, or anything you want to have as a static page on your site.

Basically, it means no matter where someone is on your website, they will see these pages at the top under the banner or site title.

Pages are very easy to make. In the dashboard of your WordPress site, go to pages, then in the drop down menu, choose "Add New."

Next you name the page. Fill in the content and publish it.

Now you have your first page published. I recommend creating all of your pages before adding the content. The flow of your work will be easier if you have the structure of the site in place.

Setting Your Home Page & Blog Page

This is a very easy step. First Make your home page and name it whatever you like. No need to name it Home you can name it the same as you blog for instance the home page of my Smogrettes blog is named "Welcome To Smogrettes Electronic Cigarette Comparison" but it shows up as "HOME" in the navigation menu.

Once you have the page created and named whatever you like go to the settings > Reading
in the WordPress dashboard.

In the section select the second option "A Static Page" then select the pages you created to be the home page and the blog roll. Now no matter what you named the home page it will show up as "HOME" in the navigation bar but the title of the page will still read what you named it.

If you leave this in the default setting "your Latest page" the home page will automatically be the blog roll.

POST

Posts are the individual posts that show up in your blog roll. This way you can add as much content as you like without running out of room on the menu bar.

Before you start adding posts, you will want to add all of the categories you plan to have on your site. Go to the post area and then click on categories.

Then you enter the name and the slug of your category. You will want to capitalize each word in the title area. The slugs are all lower case.

This is a recipe site I own. As you can see, it has places for Beef, Bread, Chicken, and so on. When you make a post you will have to choose which category you want to place it under.

Set up all of the categories you can think of to get started. Don't worry if you forget one; you can always add new ones later.

Now that that's done, all you have to do is create a post. You do this the same way you make a page only under Post > Add New.

Before you publish your post, choose a category to place it in.

Now when you publish this post it will show up in your blog roll under the chosen category. You can chose to place a post in as many categories as you like.

The next step is to create a custom menu; otherwise, your pages will show up in alphabetical order on the menu bar.

Thanks everyone I am really glad you like it. I was hoping to have a place to link to when new members ask these questions, because it takes awhile to try to explain these things in text.
