Let's say you were looking to explore the "gardening tools" niche. You can enter that into the Google Trend search bar:
Search Data
The search data represents the search volume that the particular search has yield over the past 6 years (in this case). What good is this data?
What you can do is find trends within this data. Looking at the chart below, you will notice a spike around the 1st quarter (March) of every year and it peaks around the middle of May. From this information you can clearly determine that this is the hottest time of the year for gardening tools. Now you can take this info and prepare your campaigns around these months.
With the search data, you will be able to find search volume trends within almost any industry. For example, within the dieting industry you will typically an spike in January of every year because of New Years Resolutions.
News
The key to success within any industry is a result of immersing yourself into the subject matter. One great way to do this is through the News component of trends. Below is a screenshot of the News relevant to "gardening tools".
These news articles can then be leveraged within your marketing campaigns. How about using the story about new gardening tools, making it your own, and sending it to your email list. How about taking one of these topics and writing your own article from it. Look at the keywords within the topics "where can I buy gardening" and utilize these for your PPC campaigns.
Keeping up with the news also helps you become the "expert". The Internet is a medium that allows anyone to become an expert in pretty much any topic, and "knowing your stuff" will translate into much more success within any industry.

I couldn't get too much from Google except something about not enough data so I am surmising that that meant the niche was to small? or not enough information, had been collected?
I asked the wrong questions.
Even so i was really impressed and now I feel confident to study all my little ideas.
