Dang that Invisible Visual Editor that refuses to Work!

Over the last few months there have been a number of complaints about the visual editor not appearing. This also applies to people who suddenly open up pages and posts just to see all their content missing in visual but perfectly intact in the text editor. So I am hoping that some troubleshooting options will be helpful for anyone experiencing these problems.

Unfortunately, many of use prefer to work with the visual editor as it makes it significantly easier to format your post without having to know any html (which is required to do fancy things in the text editor)

In case you aren't sure what you are looking at

Visual Editor

Text Editor

As you can see the options in each tab look every different. Quite a few of us, myself included, just do not work well in text mode, especially for any kind of extended period of time.

So it is of top priority to get the visual editor back when it decides to stop working for whatever reason.

Prevention Tip

Judebanks was kind enough to offer a tip in the comments on something that might prevent your visual editor from vanishing in the future. Figured it couldn't hurt to mention it here since some people have reoccurring problems.

When you are done working on your site for the day, close all your website tabs and go back to the main area of your Wordpress Dashboard and log out from there. Don't log out while in one of the editors (I know i have been guilty of this). Just an easy habit to get into that might prevent you from having issues in the future.

Now back to the topic at hand! - Missing Editor

Just to start, trying logging out of your site for a few minutes and logging back in. This happened to work for someone yesterday in live chat. Definitely an easy solution to the problem.

For anyone else that is not so lucky with this technique...

TIME TO GET TROUBLESHOOTING!

***SIDE NOTE - Wordpress does have a troubleshooting option that involves adding some stuff to a .php file. I have left that out as I don't think its a good idea to go messing around with parts of the code unless they know 100% what they are doing.

I had it happen twice tonight. Once I had to reboot my laptop, though I am not sure how that would work since the problem was not actually on my computer.
The second time, I hit F5 and after the site refreshed it was back.

Hi. This was helpful but it didn't work.. My visual editor is acting like a crazy person! It vanishes and returns and jumbles the text all over the place, it shows only capitals and bold type, no regular text. Argh!
I recently updated Pretty Link Lite plugin. What I'm wondering is, if I deactivate it, does that also mess with the links I created on older posts using that plugin?
This problem with visual editor comes and goes every few months. Usually Leo's 'clear cache tip' works, but not this time.

To Everyone,
My fix was to do as above, close out all the tabs and shut down the computer overnight. The few minutes thing didn't work, and the sleep option is what I have been using. So, i think that the site just needs a good shut down as often as we can give it to prevent the disappearing content from visual.

I am using mostly chrome and it still was a problem for me so I'm not certain it is the search engine we use.

It is easy to get a lot of tabs open during the course of working on our sites and maybe like all of us our website need to rest and reboot too.
Not going to say anything about them being human too.

For those having more trouble than is fixed by an overnight shutdown, I read somewhere that one of us got in touch with WordPress and they fixed it right away.

I don't know how to get in touch with them in person so I sent a request to one of their forums.

I did get an email that they received my request and are sending it to the forums. If I get an answer from them at any point I will let the community know.

Thanks for all the support during what seemed like a personal crisis.

All the best.

Hi guys, so for the record my visual editor had gone missing again for the 2nd time around. Worse the 1st thing that fixed it before is not working anymore.

It's like the Z virus that turns people to zombies that has an auto immune system with vaccine. LOL! And much worse is that I've gone all through the end of this troubleshooting but didn't work. I had been stuck for a whooping 2 days trying to code on the text editor but OMG I just wasted effort and time. Haha!

So I finally decided to look for some help. So I send a message to the WA support team but of course I didn't stop looking for help on other places and finally I came across this video which totally solve my problem.

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/adding-foxy-proxy-to-firefox-to-fix-your-visual-editor-forever\

It's a little bit of a lengthy video but bare with it cos it's worth the wait.

Hopefully this ends up my battle with the "Invisible Visual Editor" forever. LOL!

Go and fix it! :D

Man I'm sick of this problem, I've tried every single suggestion from a dozen different posts etc., and so far nothing has worked

UPDATE: This was resolved by tech support. Apparently my IP was being blocked due to too many requests (because too many tabs were open at once while I was editing). I have to watch this, when I'm viewing changes, sometimes multiple tabs get opened, and then I start editing in the new tab and so on.

Thanks for this troubleshooting guide. I've had plenty of problems with the WordPress visual editor. Usually, the steps in this troubleshooting guide will solve the problem. For some reason, I am having all kinds of unsolvable problems today. Support checked and said all should be well. Here is my second support request:

"I'm still having lots of problems. My site loads very slow. The WordPress visual editor does not work. When loading my site, often a skeleton version will load (lots of graphics missing). I've tried different browsers. I've cleared the cache, history, cookies, etc. I re-installed WordPress. I tried all the suggestions in this WA troubleshooting training: I've been up all night and am still not sure what the problem is. Is this a WordPress issue? Is this a hosting issue? Is this a WordPress and hosting issue? Something else?
Any help is greatly appreciated."

It started doing it again, but i think I have found a fix. When you load your page and it is all blank, try toggling a few times between visual and html and if it still doesn't work, select the pages heading from the left hand side menu and go back into editing the page and try to toggle between visual and html again. It seems to have a mind of its own, with sometimes working and sometimes it doesn't. If it won't work, try doing something else for a while then come back and try again.

Hi Craig, somehow I missed this when you posted it. Proves that nobody is perfect ;-)

I am one of those using TinyMCE Advanced and WP Edit, because with the WP editor alone I am missing certain function button and NEVER had a problem.

The editor going blank happened to me only when I was forced to work out of a library back then when my computer equipment was stolen in a home robbery. The reason was a particular set-up by the library administrators.

8 hours after developing the missing visual data, shutdown, sleep then startup and no joy yet., Ran ccleaner, rebooted, drank coffee, said bad things to computer, tried ie and firefox, prayed, and still no visual but text ok. the consensus seems tobe that there is a server issue and that normal automatic maintenance fixes the visual problem after some time by itself. credit is then given by us to the last thing we did??? I say that because if you read the threads on this; the fix happens to each of us at different events on our part. "life is about how you handle the hurtles and not about the finish line".

Debra, did you first run the browser development tool diagnostic, and if so, did you get any javascript error messages? If so, exactly what was the error message. This fix is only for javascript errors.

Because the editor is working on one site and not the other, it is possible that your first site is located on an older server and a different PHP.

If you have not done this already, put in a hosting support ticket and tell them you have done everything that the community has suggested, and more, and you cannot get the visual editor to work on your first site but it is working on your other site.

They might suggest moving your site to a new server, in which case give them permission to do that.

If Hosting move your site to a new server and the problem persists, and you feel comfortable with it, send me by private message your website login and ftp details, and what browser you are using and I will see if I can help at my end. ~Jude

Hi Jude, you are so sweet.

Where do you find the browser development tool diagnostic? I honestly don't rememember (medical problem with memory, sorry), but I'm going to say no. I did put in a ticket (4th over the course of this problem) and explained all that I had done. My browser had come back by the time they answered, as usual.

Not that they took too long, more like when you take the car in with a horrible noise and its not there when the tech checks it out sort of thing.

It happened to me in Firefox. I had to save my bookmarks, uninstall Firefox completely and reinstalled it, and then it was working again.

To diagnose the issue in Chrome, when you experience the issue, scroll down to the Chrome section on the page below, which explains how to use the developer tool in Chrome.

See if any errors show up while the issue is happening. It might bring you one step closer to diagnosing the problem.

Jean, I found another possible solution for the visual editor problem.

It could be a javascript error, which can be identified by using the browser's development tool to inspect the elements while the visual editor screen is open.

Once the issue is identified as being javascript, follow the instruction in Step 2 at the link below.

I did this via FTP and it worked instantly. I added the Script_Debug code to the wpconfig.php file exactly as explained there.

I returned to my site, the visual editor was working perfectly.

Then I removed that Script_debug code from the wpconfig.php file.

So my solution was Step 2 here:

Since I'm using Firefox, I may have to see if Java-script is a problem on this browser. I tried to open the Visual editor using the Chrome browser and had no problems at all. The visual editor showed up there just fine.

Maybe you should write a training blog on this very thing.

Still do not understand why my own personal domain doesn't show the same tendencies, never mind eh! Try ur network settings anyone reading this who has had the same weird problem!

There is a lot of work going on with the WA databases and moving sites to different servers. They work behind the scenes while keeping the WA community operational. That's great, but it could also means we can have glitches along the way.

I have 2 possible, albeit temporary, suggestions:

1. For anyone willing (or desperate enough to try it) there are front end editor plugins that will help to edit existing content and even add new ones. This one looks pretty good:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-quick-front-end-editor/

I've used similar plugins in the past but I prefer working in the backend. Until the glitch is fixed, it may help some people. I emphasize that I have not used the above plugin.

2. If you have two or more sites and the editor works in one but not the other. ss a temporary measure, until the issue can be resolved:

1. Write your content at the other site that has a fully functional editor. Save it as a DRAFT.
2. Go into text mode and copy the full CODE of that post into the TEXT mode of the site that is not enabling visual mode.
3. Change the permalink address to the current site. Don't forget to do this!
4. Then publish it.

This is a band-aid temporary solution. The working site does not have to be hosted at WA. As long as it is a WordPress site, this should work.

Wasting my time trying to get support for some support, 3 tickets sent, ticket one yesterday, two hours back n forward, no joy, told me create another ticket, second ticket yesterday, no reply, third ticket today, no reply, not exactly supportful, and they came vacross yesterday as annoyed. Asked if they could do team viewer, answered with a very blunt "no"

Wow that's depressing I don't often hear of people having such issues with support. Honestly in thus case you might want to pm Carson about your experience and see if he can help clear it up. Only problem with them is they can answer anywhere from the same day to a few days later but they are the owners so they should be made aware if you are having such a difficult time with support. You said you just don't have a visual editor correct? Can you take a screen shot like with a free program like monosnap or whatever you normally use maybe we are missing something and what theme/plug in are you using

Guess what - I now have the same problem with the visual editor. My go to solutions that I have used in the past don't work either.

Kyle said in chat today that we should not use Advanced TinyMCE or WP Edit or any of those because eventually they all break.

Okay, I can live with the default editor. The problem, at least for me, is that I cannot even get the native WP editor back with the WYSIWYG buttons.

As for WA Hosting - yeah, the other day I got scolded for sending in duplicate messages. Agggg - the system did it, not me!

I sent in another ticket at Kyle's suggestion - guess what - I can see that it was sent out in duplicate again. I better go stand in the corner now...LOL ~Jude

Oh no! Well you know Loes mentioned that she uses a siterubix site with those text plugins. Makes her posts in that site all pretty and then copy and pastes the html into her actual site. That way if the plugins crash, break, etc it won't actually hurt your main site.

Just got a reply from hosting support asking for my IP address and a screen shot, saying that most likely I have too many editor icons open and too many connections because the visual editor works okay for them.

I only have that one site open and only one window open and always close out everything else, except for my gmail account. Could be all those gmail messages coming through. ~Jude

I agree, it makes no sense. Either my refreshing Firefox and reinstalling Chrome has fixed it for me, or at the same time there was an auto updated to WP ver 4.2.3 - don't know which one solved the problem, but it's all good now. ~Jude

I log out several times a day, for two weeks, still no visual editor
I refresh browsers
I disable all plugins
I use default theme, no difference
I disable antivirus and firewall
I clear cache on all browsers, on all 3 of my devices
I can't think of anything else I could possibly do
I have reinstalled Java, flash
2 weeks no editor :(

Wow you are having the worst time with the editor that I've seen. Mine disappears now and then for days at a time and I too have gone thru the list of all the things you've done as well with no benefit. I just wait it out and work on content or researching keywords until it comes back.

Two weeks without it is ridiculous tho. Sort of defeats the goal of regular loading of content.

Perhaps it's time to message Kyle or Carson about it?

I have an external wordpress domain, no problemo! I can see the visual editor settings - Same computer, same browser same everything, just siterubix has NEVER displayed the editor options!

tech support seemed a bit peeved actually, told me to start a new ticket - after two hours of conversation, they need me to go through it all again....no way!

This is very unusual in regards at least to how long support is taking to fix the issue. most people are able to get it fixed almost right away. I have personally never had problems with the siterubix or the normal domains hosted here at WA but I know that it is a random wordpress problem because of the complaints on wordpress forums. I havent had a chance to update the post yet but if you scroll down and check out judebanks comment it might be helpful.

I just encountered the missing visual editor dilemma for the first time today. I have tried all of the suggestions here and nothing is working. I went to my test site to see if the issue was there as well, however it seems to be fine on that site. The issue is just on my actual site.

One question about deactivating plugins and then re-activating them. I only tried deactivating some of them as I have a few where I had to do a customization in the settings. If I deactivate and then re-activate those will all the customization I did be gone?
Reply
autumn56 Premium
normally deactivating will not reset ur settings, the only time all your settings will vanish is if you uninstall and reinstall the addon. Have you tried opening a support ticket? so far they seem to have a 100% success rate and they move pretty fast.

Yes, I did end up opening one and they suggested closing all browers and tabs. So I didn't hat and opened just one browser and tab and it started working again. They were very quick to respond. Thanks for the info on the plugins.

Can't remember if this was mentioned before, but I have found another option that might help some people, though maybe not everyone.

If you don't already have it, install the Google Libraries plugin. It allows your site to use common javascript libraries from AJAX Google libraries, instead of WordPress.

You don't need to do anything other than install the plugin and activate it.

I found this solution here - scroll down to look at the post by Aaron Atfinson - apparently it helped a few people:

https://wordpress.org/support/topic/visual-editor-not-working-in-wordpress-35

You may still need to use CTRL-F5 to refresh the page after viewing the content on the web and returning to the editor.

Worth a try. ~Jude

I am using a PC with Windows 8.1, Firefox and a touch screen. I have experienced problems in other areas with the touch screen but not in wordpress before. (do not actively use the touch however.)

Yesterday I could get the Visual Editor by refreshing the page, today I cannot. Does however work in Chrome today and also in Firefox on a PC with xp and firefox.

Have been through all suggestions here but still have the problem. Am lodging a support ticket.

You are not the first person to say they have only experienced this problem through Siterubix but there are a few threads on it from wordpress so I know it must be happening to people outside of WA. I personally have never had the issue so I have no idea if there is any rhyme or reason to what causes the problem. Support should be able to get it cleared up fairly quickly though and hopefully the issue does not persist.

Support asked me to close all connections and try again. I did that and problem was still there. They asked me for my IP if problem persisted which I supplied. Support responded to try again with this comment " it is possible the the scripts/images are not loaded on your end because of multiple connections from your IP. " I did and worked OK this time. If occurs again support asked me to contact them again. Fingers crossed all OK now.

Hi Jean,
By now I'm 99% sure this is an issue with the hosting site.
Last Friday, as you know, I tried everything suggested by you and some other WA people. I also followed the suggestions that I found on various WP forums. Nothing, absolutely nothing worked. Not on my main computer, not on three other computers and also no change when using different browsers. All this with many restarts of the various computers. Using other computers, with different log-ons, actually would eliminate any polluted caches problems.
Anyways, late Friday night I decided to let things be. Kicked back and took a beer.
Saturday morning I fired up my main computer logged in to my site and mysteriously everything was working fine with response times that dazzled me! This is the reason why I now believe that the problems rest with the hosting company.
I'm curious to other peoples experience with this issue and I will follow the various forums on this topic.
I will report on the WA platform if and when I have news on the subject.
Have a great Sunday!
Ron.

Thank you again for your blog which I am sure will help many people here in WA experiencing the same problem.

I am very sorry that it seems to be happening to you so intermittently. I have personally never had the problem so I really have no idea what is causing the problem so often for some people. Everything that I have included so far in this tutorial are things that have fixed it for other people and as you can see it is quite varied which makes it super hard to pinpoint what seems to be causing the issue. I did mention though that Wordpress had a troubleshooting option which includes you adding something to a .php file in your site but I dont know if this possibly theme related or not. I am still trying to keep an eye out for more ideas though

I agree with you Debra, sometimes if you just wait a bit wordpress will stop being stupid and the visual editor will just return on its own. In that time instead of getting frustrated about it not working you can always look at some training, watch a video, write out some content, do some research, etc etc. Another thing is that technically you can always post your content into the text editor but it takes a little bit of time if you want to format it correctly. Though you could just post it if you want to keep your scheduling consistent and then just go in and make it pretty when your visual editor reappears. There is also some training throughout WA with simple html codes for anyone that might want to practice in the text editor. maybe ill add a page about that just in case people are having a very hard time.

Jean, this happens to me from time to time. In addition to the steps you have covered (very good), another thing to try that has worked for me is to switch temporarily to the WP default theme (Twenty-Fifteen). Then switch back to the current theme.

This will sometimes automatically correct any error caused by a corrupted file update in WP.

Another tip, more prevention than cure, is to close all open tabs, return to the dashboard and log out from there instead of logging out while still on the editor page. ~Jude
Reply
autumn56 Premium
Thats interesting, I shall add that as a possible solution as well! Doing some additions to it tomorrow or Monday when I don't have to work. Might as well throw in anything that could be helpful.

Now when you say prevention do you mean that you should log out from your dashboard instead of from your editor page in general (like before your visual editor goes missing?)
Reply
Missa3 Premium
Hi Judebanks,

I think that is a good habit to get onto, I'm going to try that as I hctually have this problem often, and I haven't narrowed down why. It doesn't coinside with updates or anything.

Anywho, thanks for the tip. Thank you too Autumn56

Yes, I'm saying close all open windows and tabs that are open within that WordPress site, and then log out from the dashboard.

When you try to log out without closing open tabs/windows, the system should give a message, something like, 'are you sure you want to log out?' and is a signal that you still have an open tab or window within that WP site.

If you ignore this and log out - well, it could be a coincidence, or the way my browser is set up - but I noticed when I logged in later, my visual editor went missing. The fix, for me, was to log out properly and log back in. ~Jude

Sometimes all you have to do is just look at the customization settings for your theme to accomplish things that one may use a plugin for.

Ok, I've been doing some experimenting and research regarding this.

Right now as I type this I'm logged into four WordPress sites in four different tabs all within FireFox. Three of the sites are hosted here at WA, the 4th is a clients site which is on Hostgator.

All 3 of the sites hosted here the Visual Editor won't load, yet in my clients site it is loading!

So does this mean something here at WA is having an adverse affect on my Firefox settings or WordPress settings?
Reply
autumn56 Premium
Okay new plan, on page two where i mention the visual editor disable option. Try clicking that and saving so that you have told it to disable and then go back in and uncheck it and update. See if that tricks the editor into coming back on (just found this in a wordpress thread)

Have you tried support at all about this by the way? There are some other solutions but they all include like reinstalling wordpress which isnt quite an option on the WA sites and I feel like more hassle than it should be. But support might be able to see any quirks that are causing problems.

Any way to check in firefox on a different computer to see if maybe its your specific browser settings that might be causing an issue with the sites hosted here at WA? Congrats for being my test subject =) LOL
Reply
jaytech Premium
I'm not sure how reinstalling WordPress on a brand new site would work and I can't see how it can be my end if it works on my clients site.

I just tried disabling & re-enabling, no success.

I never bothered even contacting support, as I got it working on other browsers. I had always assumed it was my end due to using an ancient PC. It was last night when I realised it was working on my clients site.

It could possibly be a browser setting I guess, what is a whole other matter :)

Yeah reinstalling wordpress is def not something that should be attempted at all lol. Not even sure how possible it is here. But I would go ahead and shoot support a ticket just to see if they have any ideas. I can't find anything that is specific to firefox. Though I am still looking lol

Yeah, I been having major probs with visual editor on 3 devices, 5 different browsers, I have never seen the vis. Editor in 2 and half weeks since going premium.
Ticket one, two hours of back and forth, told me to start a new ticket
Ticket two sent, yesterday - no reply
Ticket 3, 8 hours ago, no reply

Its like they don't know how to fix it so they are ignoring me now!

Hey Jean, nice advise. What I realize as well, is those images that we download, they take so many space on your hard drive which can cause the visual problem. That is what I encountered.
So the pictures that are saved on WA hard drive, I just eliminate those ones on my computer. and that help to bring the visual back.

Ah that is an interesting solution. You must have had lots of pictures! Do you think it was just from your hard drive being so full in general before you made room by deleting images?

Oh definitely we do not even resize them before we download them. Big mistake.

Thanks Jean, bookmarked it, when needed:) About the TinyMCE advanced plugin, I have it on my test site and I create there stuff, then copy the text editor and put it on my regular website, very convenient manner.

That is an interesting idea. Never thought about it. That way your tinymce cant ever freak out on your site! lol. When I have time this weekend I will go in and add that as a possible solution for people using those plugins that way they dont have to worry about it affecting their site at some point.

It started this way of working with this plugin, because the CKEditor wracked one of my site, had a lot of extra work to fix all. Then I found out, you can just copy this kind of coding :)

Is the ckeditor still a current plug in that people use? Or did you only switch to the tinymce one because ckeditor blew up one of your sites =)

Correct remark:)

Okay great, thank you a bunch. I will be sure to expand that plug in area a bit then as well for people who find that plugin is causing a problem. Using it on a test site is ingenious and i think some new people probably dont realize you can copy the html code from the text editor anyway and paste it in another text editor to maintain all the coding.

Good information and it will be useful to many. I think we all experience trouble at one point or another with WP Editor. Sometimes it helps to also delete browsing history and Cache of the browser. Keep up the good work.

Nice one Jean, this has been asked a LOT just lately, I was getting deja vu. Now I can just point to this training!

Yeah thats how I have felt the last month. I got the idea for the training when I spent a few hours trying to help someone and realized I had to jump from blog post to blog post and from question to question to find the different options that worked for people. I have just been slacking in actually getting int done... =)

Great tutorial, Jean!

Just like you, I was completely unaware of the visual editor being disabled as you described on page 2 of the tutorial! I'll keep that in mind ;)

And I am sure this tutorial will be very helpful to many WP users inside and outside WA ;)

Oh hi Alex!

It means a lot that you find it useful since you post so much useful stuff for people. But after spending the last few weeks answering the question about the editor over and over I realized there wasn't some easy tutorial for me to link to them!
So I figured I should go ahead and give it a go. One day i'll move up to videos like the big boys =p.

Jean, that's exactly how success is born.
Find a gap in the industry and fill it! Find what information is missing and create that information! Once again, great job ;)

I might post a lot of stuff but I don't know everything. That's one of the reasons I've been with WA for so long - always learning new stuff!

Good job, Jean. This really needed to be done, as I see so many people that this is happening to. Now we can just refer them here! Thanks!

Awesome job on this training, you covered it all, with great images :-) My culprit when I had this problem was the TinyMce and the wp edit being run ( activated) at the same time. THey were working fine until one day they decided they did not want to play nicely anymore :-( de-activating them both and adding one back and clearing my cache did the trick. Thanks for the great training on this.

Yeah I was thinking about you for half of it =). Not to mention everytime we are in live chat someone pops in with the problem. Though I guess you could just always skip right to support if you dont feel like dealing with the hassle at all.
